Moving My Curfew
For some time now, I have had an 8:00 p.m. curfew—the time by which I have to be at home, even on weekends. When I was younger, I didn’t really complain. But now I have reached an age when this curfew is no longer suitable. For several reasons, it is clearly time to move my curfew to 10:00 p.m. on weekends.
First of all, I’m soon going to be an adult. Like all teenagers, I need practice handling the greater freedom that goes along with being an adult. When teenagers don’t get practice handling freedom, they often make many serious mistakes. For example, some teenagers go away to college and suddenly they don’t know how to handle it, and they get into trouble. I believe it is better to increase freedom gradually. That way the teenager learns how to handle freedom responsibly. I believe I could handle a later curfew without making serious mistakes in judgment.
A later curfew is also important to me because I’m an active student. As you know, I am often on the committee in charge of running many extra-curricular activities. Because of my present curfew, I have to finish school activities over an hour before they are over. Other students must take over for me when I leave. A 10:00 curfew would allow me to stay until the end of school functions and give me enough time to get home without rushing.
Finally, I am a teenager who can be trusted to handle a 10:00 p.m. curfew. I know that many teenagers cannot handle much responsibility. However, I am clearly not that kind of teenager. I have proven myself to be a very responsible person. For example, I have never been in serious trouble, either at school or in the community. I also hold a part-time job and still manage to maintain a “B” average in school. In other words, I am a person who uses my time wisely, meets responsibilities and stays out of trouble.

Dear Tom,
My classmate, Lucy, bought a new pen. I liked it very much, so I used it without her permission. Unluckily, I broke it. Then I put it back secretly. Now she finds out the truth and is very angry with me. I don’t know what to do. Can you help me?
Yours,
Darning

Freddie woke up to see it was snowing. The world outside was white. Snow covered the roads, the houses, and even the driveway Freddie had just shoveled (铲) the day before. He got out of bed and headed to the bathroom for his regular morning shower. As he reached for the tap, his mother appeared in the doorway.
“I’ve got news,”she said. “There’s been so much snow overnight that the roads are slippery and dangerous. So the school is on vacation for one day.”
Freddie’s eyes lit up. He’d never had a snow day off from school before. “I’m going back to bed!” Freddie headed back to his room and climbed under the covers. After a few minutes, he realized that it was too late. He was already wide awake. He headed down to the kitchen, watching his father fry the eggs and his mother pour juice and coffee. It was relaxing, thought Freddie.
After breakfast his mother suggested he build a snowman outside. Freddie didn’t really like the cold and the snow. He’d rather play video games inside.
“You can play afterwards, but how about going outside for a little bit? It’s good to get some fresh air, and you might even enjoy yourself,” his mother said. Freddie unwillingly put on the warm clothes and headed outside.
Standing alone in the yard, the boy sighed (叹气), thinking the quicker he completed his snowman, the faster he could go back inside to play his video games. He set to work, packing up some snow into a large ball.
Moments later, Freddie saw his friend Dion appearing up the street. He waved to Freddie. “Hey! I saw you out here and thought you might want company. Snow days are wonderful!” Dion laughed.

Delighted at the idea that they would go sledding (坐雪橇) down the hill in the park next, Freddie excitedly ran into his house.
