A small boy was packing his school bag in his room, a room filled with books. Many were novels and some were short stories; many were new and some were yellowed with age; many were detective stories and some were fairy tales. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. The small boy called Frank turned his wheelchair (轮椅) to his right and slowly opened the door. As usual it was his mom, who wanted Frank to get ready for school. Frank had his breakfast, said goodbye to his mom and started his travel to the school in his wheelchair. Frank had lost his leg when he was eight in an accident. He had to spend the rest of the life in the wheelchair. But the accident did not take away his trust in life, and he wanted to be a writer. His mother also supported his dream. Frank had not wanted to go to the school for the handicapped (残疾人). So he had joined an ordinary school.

On the way to school, he met his loving and kind-hearted friend, Lawrence. Lawrence wheeled his friend quickly and talked with him happily. He told Lawrence that there would be a story competition next week. Lawrence encouraged him to take part in it. Lawrence said, “Trust yourself. You can make it!” They reached the school in thirty minutes. Lawrence said bye to Frank and they both went to their classes.

Slowly days passed, and the Formative Exams started. They ended within a week. “Frank, the score is 100,”said the class teacher cheerfully. Frank was very happy because he had scored full marks. He wheeled his chair and again met Lawrence on the way. This time both stopped on the side and Lawrence said, “Try to take part in the story competition.” “OK, thank you, Lawrence,” said Frank excitedly. He rushed home, and wrote something on a piece of paper. His mom was very happy to see her son cheerful and excited. Actually he was going to write a short story to take part in the competition. But he didn’t know how to finish it.

Steve grabbed his bat and glove. “See you later, Mom. I’m going to Paul’s.” With these words, he raced out the door and slammed (砰地关上) it behind him. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the freshman team.

Seeing Paul waiting outside, Steve lifted his bat onto his shoulder and asked, “What are you doing? Where’s your stuff?” Paul shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Thimpson’s garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Thimpson’s. They’re kind of old.” “Okay,” said Steve. “I’ll help you. We’ll get done quicker working together.”

The boys went down the block to the Thimpson’s and got started. They put boxes that were scattered (散落) around the garage floor on shelves before they swept. As Paul lifted a big box onto a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked up the envelope and found it wasn’t sealed. He opened it, inside which were lots of one hundred dollar bills. Gasping in astonishment, Paul pulled out a handful of bills and showed them to Steve.

“Where did you get that?” asked Steve. Paul pointed to the shelf, explaining, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be a couple of thousand dollars here.” He looked past Steve to the opening garage door. “Nobody is around. If I take some, I bet no one will ever know,” added Paul, uncontrollably picturing the bat and glove in McGroger’s Sports Store that he had longed for.

Steve frowned and shook his head. “Are you crazy? That’s stealing.” “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing; it’s kind of payment for my hard work.” Paul defended himself. “Forget about it. You’re better than that.” Steve grabbed the money from Paul’s hand, stuffed it back in the envelope and put the envelope back on the shelf. “Come on! Let’s get done and go to the park,” Steve urged.

Winter break was approaching, and all Scott wanted to do was go snowboarding. Unfortunately, Scott's parents had different plans. They had booked a weeklong tropical cruise (热带船游). Scott hated warm weather and asked if he could just stay at his best friend's house so he could snowboard every day at the local mountain. His parents didn't want to hear anything of it. He kept debating them about the topic, but they would not change their minds. Family time was important to them, and it was tradition that they spend winter break together.

The week of the cruise arrived, and Scott continued to mumble (咕哝) his complaints as he and his family left their house to head south. Scott's dad told him that he would only make the vacation worse for himself if he didn't change his attitude and open his mind to a new experience. Scott still couldn't stop thinking about all of the snow he was leaving behind.

When they arrived at the port to board the ship, Scott had a hard time admitting that he was actually impressed with the size of the ship. He had seen the brochures but seeing the ship in person was a whole different animal. Then he remembered that the brochure said something about a surfing pool. Maybe surfing would be somewhat like snowboarding. After all, it involved riding a board.

Scott climbed aboard the ship with his parents, and then they walked around to check everything out. He couldn't believe how fancy the accommodations were. The dining room looked like a royal hall; the game room had all of his favorite games; the ship's deck (甲板) had several different swimming pools for different purposes. Then Scott saw the surfing pool. It was incredible. It wasn't a big pool, but it had big waves, and the young man who was demonstrating how to ride the waves made it look like a ton of fun.

Besieged (被包围的) Paris was suffering from famine (饥荒). Even the sparrows on the roofs and the rats in the sewers were growing rare. People were eating anything they could get. As Monsieur (法语,先生) Morissot, watchmaker by profession and idler (懒汉) for the occasion, was walking along the boulevard one bright January morning, his hands in his trousers pockets and stomach empty, he suddenly came face to face with his friend—Monsieur Sauvage, a fishing friend. Before the World War II broke out, Morissot had been in the habit, every Sunday morning, of setting forth with a bamboo rod (杆子) in his hand and a tin box on his back. He took the Argenteuil train, got out at Colombes, and walked to the Ile Marante. The moment he arrived at this place of his dreams he began fishing and fished till nightfall.

Every Sunday he met in this very spot Monsieur Sauvage, a fat, happy, little man, a draper in the Rue Notre Dame de Lorette, and an warm-hearted fisherman. They often spent half the day side by side, rod in hand and feet dangling over the water, and a warm friendship had sprung up between the two. Some days they did not speak; at other times they chatted; but they understood each other perfectly without the aid of words, having similar tastes and feelings. In the spring, about ten o'clock in the morning, when the early sun caused a light mist to float on the water and gently warmed the backs of the two enthusiastic anglers, Morissot would occasionally remark to his neighbour: "My, but it's pleasant here." To which the other would reply: "I can't imagine anything better!" And these few words sufficed to make them understand and appreciate each other.

A beautiful day in autumn, they decide to go fishing in Colombes which is not far from the base of Germans.
