Dora is a seven-year-old girl. One day, when she visited her friend Alice, she saw a beautiful bird in a cage on the balcony of the house. Alice told her it was her new pet. “How beautiful it is!” said Dora. “I also want to have such a bird as my pet.”
That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice’s bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird?” “Of course, you can,” said her mother. “But you need to wait because I’ve no time to visit a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room. In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling. “Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily. “It’s a birthday gift for you,” said her mother “Thank you, Mom. I love it so much!” said Dora excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day. Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later, Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to say at home. In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her. Dora felt very sad. How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She’d better stay alone. Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn’t seem to be happy either.

For the most part, Hank, a two-year-old cat, is a homebody — and for good reason. But on November 6th, Bushong, his owner, spotted Hank resting on a branch near the top of a neighbor’s tree. Bushong believed Hank got frightened by some dogs. The more scared he got, the higher he climbed. “Cats have an amazing ability to climb up trees, but they aren’t that good at climbing down,” said Dan D’Eramo, director of field services for the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA). Bushong then asked the HRA to help, but it was no easy task. HRA called the fire department, but it refused to help because of safety concerns. Then Bushong called a construction company to ask about renting scaffolding (脚手架) , but was told she would have to book the equipment 48 days in advance. Next she reached out to a local tree company, Casey Trees. But the crew said it wasn’t safe for a person to go up into the tree.
Bushong became very sad. Then neighbors came to help. Ed Baptiste, whose tree Hank had climbed, let Bushong sit in his backyard and called to Hank. Another neighbor donated a can of fish, hoping it might attract the cat to come down. Nearby dog owners took their pets on walks instead of letting them out in their yards to avoid further frightening Hank. Another neighbor suggested Bushong call a local business, which had a tall ladder. Unfortunately, their 42-foot ladder proved too short. By day five, nothing had worked. That’s when another neighbor suggested creating a pulley(滑轮)system by throwing a sandbag attached to the rope to a branch higher than Hank. It will form a pulley system as the sandbag hangs down by gravity. Then raise a basket with some of the owners’ personal items. The cat may be attracted by the familiar scents and climb into the basket.注意:

It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.
The boys gathered clothes and supplies, and began their great adventure with Brady the dog early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.
At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite. The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper.
An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid-summer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind-blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.
“Let's go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the fire-wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warming. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.
Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅)the smoke-laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope(坡). The boys shouted for him, but he didn't come back. Steve couldn't blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didn't have a clue which way.

Passing Kindness On
Mrs. Brown was in the store with her little boy Jack, having just come from Urgent Care Center to get him some medicine for a virus. While Jack looked around in the store, she couldn’t wait to get him home to warm soup and a warm bed.
“Mommy, look!” Jack said when they got close to the register. He pointed at a row of toy cars for sale. “Can I have one? Please?”
“No, Jack. You have plenty of cars,” said Mrs. Brown. “Besides, it’s very close to Christmas. Who knows what Santa will bring you?” Jack accepted his mother’s decision, but it didn’t help his mood. Now he was tired and disappointed.
When they got up to the counter, the lady at the register handed Jack one of the toy cars. “The woman in front of you in line bought this for you,” she said. “I chose the yellow one, but you can have any one you want.”
Jack looked so happy because it was the very thing he wanted. Mrs. Brown looked around for the mysterious (神秘的) benefactor, but she was long gone. “That was very nice of that lady,” she said. “Maybe we can also give an anonymous (匿名的) gift to someone else today.”
“Yes, we should!” Jack agreed. The unexpected kindness made him feel better than any medicine could. Immediately he thought of the little girl who was badly ill in Urgent Care Center. “Mommy, why not give the girl we saw in Urgent Care Center something nice to comfort her?” he suggested.

In the busy city where doctor Matthew’s clinic stood, his reputation as a skilled healer and compassionate soul spread far and wide. Tall and lean, Matthew was a familiar sight in his neat white coat, always ready to offer comfort and care to his young patients. Behind the scenes of the operating room, Matthew’s professional skills and thoughtful nature brought hope to both patients and their families. His soft-spoken words and reassuring smile were like a soothing balm, easing the fears and worries that often accompanied medical procedures. Besides these, Matthew possessed a hidden talent—a talent to cure little patients physically and mentally. It originated from his observation that after surgery, young patients often found it difficult to be comforted and cooperate with treatment due to pain and discomfort, leading to ineffective treatment outcomes and causing distress to their parents. This realization inspired him to adopt the practice of drawing on bandages for his young patients after surgery.
Each day, after surgeries, he transformed dull bandages into enchanting canvases, decorating them with vivid characters and inspiring landscapes that brought bright smiles to his young patients’ faces. During quiet evenings, he practised his artistic abilities, crafting creative illustrations that ignited joy and hope. Every stroke of his pen served as a lighthouse of comfort in the depressing hospital setting.
Once, timid Alex arrived at Matthew’s clinic, his gaze reflecting uncertainty. But after surgery, Alex was greeted by a magnificent dragon gracing his bandage, a creation of Matthew. The sight of the beautiful dragon lighted up Alex’s face, driving away his fears and replacing them with wonder. Through Matthew’s drawings, he devoted to mending not just bodies but spirits, transforming dull hospital rooms into havens of imagination and bravery. However, fate dealt a harsh blow one rainy night. In a tragic car accident, Matthew sustained injuries that made his hands unable to grasp neither a scalpel(手术刀)nor a pen.
