Ecotourists are people who want to experience the natural world without damage and leave it that way when they return home. This started in the 1990s and ecotourism is now growing three times faster than the tourism industry at large. The Ecuador’s remote Amazon Basin (盆地) is leading to that enlarging, and it gives a snapshot of what ecotourism looks like.
At the Ecolodge, a small group of small houses sits Kapawi Ecolodge in the middle of the Achuar people’s reserve (保护区) and is only reached by air. From here, visitors can explore parts of the Amazon rainforest seen by few outsiders. As they do local Achuar guides explain how the forest is like their supermarket, where they find food, clothing, medicine and tools. As a result, tourists learn to enjoy the local culture as well as the natural environment.
The owners of Kapawi pay monthly rent to the Achuar people, but they also train the community to run and manage the lodge. They have agreed on a plan to turn the operation over to the Achuar completely by 2011. The owners are working to make ecotourism benefit and empower the local people.
You probably won’t start your own ecolodge (生态旅馆), but you can be an ecotourist if you follow these guidelines: Protect the environment; Support local businesses; Respect the local customs and traditions.
The world is full of fascinating places to visit. As an ecotourist, you can enjoy them yourself and make sure that they remain beautiful for future generations as well.

【推荐3】American Unique Buildings
The country’s full of awe—inspiring natural wonders, but those made by man (and woman) are equally impressive. The architect behind a design or the creation’s history or purpose are all elements that may prove particularly attractive. These following buildings are all well worth visiting.
Bradbury Building
Los Angeles
Glancing at the Bradbury Building, built in 1893, the oldest commercial building in L.A., you may say: “OK, it’s a 19th-century relic.” Step inside and you will be surprised by the light-filled Victorian court, a wonder of open—cage elevators, marble stairs, and splendid iron barriers. Its architectural history is debatable — Sumner Hunt’s designs seem to have been completed by George H. Wyman, who monitored the construction.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens
Miami
Built in 1916, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, formerly Villa Vizcaya, is the one-time winter home of businessman James Deering. On Biscayne Bay in the Coconut Grove neighborhood, the early 20th-century property features Italian Renaissance (文艺复兴) gardens, native woodlands, and a complex of historic outbuildings. The property designed by Paul Chalfin is today operated by Miami-Dade County.
Rogers Building
Orlando
The 132-year-old, Queen Anne-style structure, now housing an art gallery but a one-time home to cocktail-and-gaming clubs, was donated to the City of Orlando in 2018 earlier by Ford Kiene. The restriction that it must remain an arts and culture center for at least 20 years ensures public access for the near future.
Griffith Observatory
Los Angeles
It’s possible to see the stars at this destination that includes sweeping views of the city and the Hollywood sign, and has a planetarium (天文馆) to boot. It’s been a draw for its construction style sign its 1935 opening, with a $93 million expansion completed in 2006.

C.Rogers Building. | D.Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. |

Have you ever tried making your own wall art? You don’t need to be a master painter or illustrator to do so! I strongly believe that we all have the capacity to make art. Take this wall art piece, for instance.
What to do
Step 1: Cut out five or six large rectangles from your coloured card. Vary the sizes and the colors, so no two pieces are the same. These will be your base pieces.
Step 2: Put your poster board flat on the floor. Lay out your base pieces of card directly onto the poster board. Move each around until you’re happy. Try to overlap(重叠)at least two or three.
Step 3: Cut out some medium-sized pieces of card (a little smaller than your base pieces). As with the base pieces, these should be varying sizes and colors. Place these medium pieces over the base pieces, so they overlap slightly.
Step 4: One by one, measure the sizes of the overlapping sections with a ruler. Cut out a contrasting piece of card to the same dimensions, then glue them in place (covering the overlapping section, to create the effect of multiple tones).
Step 5: Stick down all of the base and medium-size pieces. Glue them directly onto the poster board with a glue stick. Take your time doing this—make sure that they’re all lined neatly with the edges of the poster board.
Step 6: Finally, fill in any gaps with smaller squares and rectangles of card. As with step 4, cover any overlapping sections with additional contrasting card.
1. Which of the following do you need to create the wall art?
A.Good painting skills. | B.A glue stick and pins. |
C.Colored cards of the same size. | D.A poster board and a ruler. |
A.Draw pictures on. | B.Act as a baseboard. |

B.All cards have the same shape. |
C.All cards overlap each other completely. |
