An Ellenton man just turned 93 years old, and decided it was time for him to go to the beach—for the first time.
Howard Fisher has been living in Florida for 20 years, but never went into the Gulf waters. For his birthday, he finally decided to see what the hype was all about it. On Sunday, he took a trip to Anna Maria Island with the help of his daughter, Sandra.
“I guess he never went to the beach because he wasn’t motivated at the time!” she told FOX 13. “By the time he decided to go, he was 93—and needed my help.”
He told her, “Sandra, isn’t it amusing? I have lived here for 20 years and never once went to the ocean. Now, I think I might like to, but I can’t.”
Sandra responded, “Yes, you can, Dad. I will make sure of it.”
Sandra, who lives in Alabama, visited her father for his birthday, and decided to help his beach wish come true. They got a beach wheelchair, which is loaned out to visitors from noon to 4 p.m. every day, she explained, at Anna Maria Island Beach Café. Those wheelchairs are provided by Manatee County.
Sandra had to document the big day. In her photos, Howard is seen with a big smile, as he relaxed and swam in the calm, green waters.
She said he was mesmerized, as he floated on his back, gazed up above him, and took in his surroundings.
“Look, I float just like a cork,” he said. “Isn’t this great? Look at that sky and those clouds.”

Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the hall of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready.
As she walked slowly to the elevator, I provided a true description of her tiny room, including the old sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she said with the happiness of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy.
“Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room…just wait.”
“That doesn’t matter,” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged. It’s how I arranged my mind. I have already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.” She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account. You take what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to put in a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my memory bank.” And with a smile, she said, “All my memories are happy ones.”
Mrs. Jones was always happy in the nursing home and she died at the age of 108.

Each Tuesday afternoon, after the bell rings for the fourth period, Liu becomes a fashion designer. At the same time, the rest of the students at the High School Attached to Yunnan Normal University in Kunming are also having classes a little bit different from the usual ones. Some students dance, others create robots, and still others review films. These are just a few of the 28 elective courses the school began to offer last month. “The fashion design class has become the bright point of my week. I learn how to choose colours and cloth as well as sewing and sketching (素描) skills. It’s all helping me to realise the dream of becoming a fashion designer I’ve had since I was a little girl,” Liu said.
Design is Liu’s passion, but for other students the electives are more an opportunity to take a fun course that relieves the pressure of schoolwork. Some students, for example, are learning how to play bridge.
Chen Xiejiao, 15, is one of them. “Many people think that playing a card game like this in class is a waste of time. But in fact, bridge is a very challenging game that helps develop memory and math skills,” she said.
Li Ke, 15, is studying robotics. “I hope to have built and designed my own robot by the end of the semester. It will be able to complete a task, like moving a ball from one place to another,” he said.

Today, the temple is the scene of a busy repair program. A team of 15 Indian experts are organizing a workforce of 400 Cambodians, most of them women, who are cleaning, repairing and rebuilding parts of this temple.
As I walked through the yards, I noticed the Cambodian women devote hours to cleaning carefully a tiny area of stone. Boards are laid down to protect the precious painted stones while the repair work is going on. There are very few machines and little heavy equipment. Workers carry building materials in buckets at the end of long poles. Piles of stones lie in a corner of the yard, waiting to be replaced.
The work of cleaning the stones is watched over by three Indian chemists. It is a very slow task. First they clean the stones with brushes using buckets of a weak chemical. Then gaps between the stones are filled in. Finally another material is painted onto the stones which will protect them from water forever.
Work starts every day at 7 am and goes on until late afternoon six days a week, with a break at midday.
Evening is the best time to visit the temple, after the tour groups have left. As the sun sinks lower, shadows spread across the yard. After sunset, the sky turns pink. The grey stone towers take on a golden color before turning pink. Nowhere else in the world can there be such a quiet, beautiful place.

I left home each morning in time to catch the 8: 05 bus from the main road. One morning I could see the bus coming. I could also see an elderly lady walking with a lovely dog beside her. There were some teenagers behind her.

Rina's mom had loved the dish since she first came to visit her daughter six years ago in Baltimore. “She had jokingly said that she wanted it on her deathbed,” Rina said. In December, Rina's mother became ill with cancer. She chose to live her last days on her own terms at home.
Last week, as Brandon and Rina prepared to visit Rina's mom, they wondered about one thing. How could they make that fried broccoli from Ekiben for her?
Brandon emailed Ekiben's owners Steve Chu and Ephrem Abebe for some tips. Chu wrote back that he and Abebe would meet them in Vermont. They would cook it themselves. They just need the date, time and location.
On Saturday, Chu, and Abebe made the six—hour drive to Vermont in a pickup. They pulled up to Rina's mom's house the following day. Like magic, the snow paused. They set up the fryer in the back of the truck, staying outside to keep things a surprise, and out of concern for COVID—19. It took several hours for the fryer to get up to temperature. When all was said and done, Chu said," It was the most perfect broccoli we ever made.”
The odor of the frying food flew into the house. Rina said it took her mom a moment to realize what was going on. “This is from Baltimore!” she said. Rina said her mom, who has struggled to eat because of sores on her mouth from the cancer, managed to eat the broccoli. “I can't believe that people would be so generous and kind for someone that they don't even know,” Rina said. Chu and Abebe, she said, wouldn't even accept gas money.

The two strangers went to the house. They had a good supper there and then they went to sleep. They slept well. One hour passed. Two hours passed. Then one of them began to snore, “Vo, vo, vo…” The other stranger heard the snoring. He thought, “The people will hear the snoring and kill him.” The stranger wanted to save the man. He thought for a while and then began to sing. He sang very well. The people didn’t hear the snoring. They listened to the song. Then they began to dance. Some of them sang the song together with the stranger and danced to the music. Men, women and even the leader sang and danced. That entire night one stranger snored, one stranger sang, and all the other people sang and danced.

The strangers left the village. But along the way they began to quarrel. The one who snored wanted more money. He said, “I must have the bigger part. Why did you sing that song last night? Because I snored.” The man who sang had his reason, too. He said that without him the man who snored might have got killed.
