As the late afternoon sun beat down on his farm in Missouri last May, Brandon finished feeding his cows and decided to go home. As they often did, his two sons, Louie, 7, and Everett, 5, followed closely.

As they headed for the house, the two boys ran ahead of their father, who stopped to close the gate. Louie paused at a board covering an old well. The board had, over time, become easily broken. When Louie stepped on it, it caved in and he fell into the well. Brandon had just close the door when he heard a cry for help. He turned around and found his younger son Everett standing alone beside the well, pointing to it and screaming.

Brandon quickly realized what had happened. “No, Louie can barely swim,” he panicked, his mind almost going blank. However, he knew he should calm down. He ran to the well and heard Louie hitting the water. Without thinking, he jumped in. Somehow, Brandon managed to grab on to a pipe that ran down the side of the well. He hit the cold water at the bottom of the well and lifted Louie up as he stuck his own legs and back against the narrow walls for support. “All right, Dad, we can climb out now,” Louie said.

If only it were that easy!

The pipe that he’d grabbed during his fall was too slippery to be of any use. There was only one way out. Looking up to see Everett looking down at them, Brandon shouted, “Everett, you’re going to have to be a big boy and save us. Run to the road and stand by the mailbox until someone stops. Tell them we need help. And Everett, stay off the road.”

I was terrified of heights. Of course, it was not really a fear of being in a high place. Rather, it was the view of a long way to fall, of rocks far below me and no firm wall between me and the edge. My sense of security was screamingly absent.I could rely only on my own sure-footedness.

Despite my fear, two summers ago I somehow found myself climbing to a high place, while quaking inside and out. Most of our high school had come along on a day trip to the Boquerón, a beautiful and pleasant spot in the foothills of Peru. Its chief attraction is the main waterfall, about 100 feet high, that thunders into a crystal clear pool feeding the Aguaytia River. All around the pool and on down to the rushing river are rocks large and small. The beach is strewn (布满) with rocks. On both sides of the fall, the jungle stretches to meet it, rising parallel to it on a gentler slope.

After eating our lunches, many of us wanted to make the climb to an area above it. We knew others had done so on previous trips. A few guys went first to make sure they were on the right path. But after they left, my group of seven decided to go ahead without waiting for them to return. I suspected we were going the wrong way, but I kept silent, figuring that the others knew better. We went along the base of the hill until we reached the climb. It stopped me in my tracks.

The climb rose steeply above us. Along the right edge, the jungle hugged the rocks; passage through its trees seemed unlikely to be achieved. The majority of my view was filled with rocks. Peering back down toward the river, I saw a steep slope of rocks all the way to the water. All I could think about was how far it would be to fall.

A week before Halloween, my young children wild with great happiness were walking and running around our home in their Halloween costumes. Just then the babysitter called, telling me that she was extremely sorry for asking for a day off. I knew that emergencies did occur, and I told her that I completely understood. But what was actually going through my mind were feelings of frustration and self-pity. And I had to pack my three kids into the car, and then drove to the hospital.

On the way, numerous things flooded into my mind, and I especially thought about how life should be going. I was thirty years old, a mother of three girls-five-year-old twins and a one-year-old baby. At this moment, I should be playing with them in the park or visiting the library together. But I was, once again, going to see the doctor. It had been a year since I was diagnosed with cancer. I knew that I was one of the lucky ones. I was grateful that surgery and chemotherapy (化疗) were over, and this was just a routine blood test. As always, there was the remaining fear that the cancer would come back. To be honest, my family and friends were great during the past year when I was in bad condition, but they were also busy with their lives. Therefore, I did not want to burden them with my feelings of unhappiness. What I just wanted to see were the positive things in life and I really wanted to express my heartfelt gratitude to them.

When we finally arrived, we sat in a crowded waiting room. Nothing special occurred until my youngest daughter, dressed up as an angel, walked up to a woman who was in a wheelchair and accompanied by her caregiver. My daughter looked at the woman and pointed to the vending (售货) machine next to her, saying sweetly, “Tweet.” This was how she said “Trick or Treat”, who had been coached previously by her twin sisters.

1,642-foot Squaw Peak, with its particularly inviting views of western Massachusetts, has tricked hikers into overlooking the potential danger among its steep, slippery cliffs, resulting in countless injuries and even deaths.

Henry Grant, soon starting his freshman year at Ithaca College, respected Squaw Peak’s record. As such, he stayed a good ten feet from the edge while he was waiting for his mother to catch up to him one day in August 2019. He watched some hikers enjoy the remarkable view; among these hikers, one woman, around 60 years old and dressed in pink, was peeking over (探身看) the lip of the cliff with her husband.

When Grant’s mother rejoined him, the two turned to continue on their way. Suddenly, he heard a tumbling(摔倒), a thump(重击声), and another thump. Then he heard something frightening: “Paula! Paula!” a man yelled desperately. Grant turned around. The woman in pink was nowhere to be seen. Obviously, she had fallen off the side of the mountain. Several hikers immediately started looking for her, but their view was blocked by trees. Grant told his mother: “I hate to say this, but I am afraid a woman hiker just fell off the cliff.” Uncertain whether they could help, Grant and his mother headed down the mountain path.

But when he saw hikers still searching, he decided to lend a hand. “I can do it,” he thought to himself. Having promised to his mother that he would be safe, he hiked off the path alone, hoping he wasn’t too late. After 15 minutes of climbing over huge rocks, pushing past bushes, and slipping down areas of loose dirt, Grant spotted a figure dressed in pink about 25 feet above him. She curled up on her knees on a small sticking-out rock. The woman had fallen about 75 feet. Fortunately, she was alive.

“Paula!” Grant shouted. “Paula! Is that you?”
