My family used to live in London. But then a few years ago my father got transferred (调动) and we came to a small town in Scotland. Everything was new here. The neighborhood, and the school.
I was not liking it much here. At this new school, nobody knew me. As I was shy, I had difficulty making friends and felt lonely all the time.
One day, when I was sitting in my seat, a girl came to me and introduced herself. It was Vivian. She smiled at me and asked if I wanted to have lunch with her. That day, we spent a great time together. Slowly, we became best friends.
In the coming month of October, it was my best friend’s birthday. I and other classmates in the school had planned a day out for her.
We all decided to take her to a nearby picnic spot (地点) in the afternoon and give her a surprise party. Everybody contributed a little to the cake and snacks. After school, we took her to the picnic spot. She cut the cake and we all enjoyed the snacks. After everybody had eaten, we all decided to enjoy the boat ride.
It was a pleasant day. The lake was small but beautiful. We were all singing together and cheering up. In the clear blue water of the lake, we could see the colorful fishes swimming rapidly. There were also ducks adding to the beauty of the scene (风景).
Everybody started clapping looking at those pretty birds. Vivian also became quite excited. Just when she was trying to touch the ducks, she lost her balance. Before anyone could do anything, she fell into the lake.
Everyone was shocked to see this. Without losing a minute, I jumped into the water. Nobody knew but I had learned to swim in my previous school.

Adam, Nick, and Tom were best friends. Five years after their graduation from college, Nick called Adam and Tom, inviting them to celebrate his birthday on his personal yacht (游艇). They got very excited.
It was a bright and sunny summer day. As Nick was studying the safety measures of the sea journey, he saw Adam and Tom coming towards his yacht. With huge hugs and smiles on every face, the three greeted each other in their usual way. “Thank you boys for coming and making my birthday even more special,” said Nick.
“But before getting started, hope you both know there is a danger zone at a particular point on this sea, ” warned Adam.
“Don’t worry. I will stay away from it. Now let the party begin!” Nick responded, starting to turn the steering wheel (方向盘) of the yacht.
Treating the friends on the beautiful white yacht sailing on the blue water was a perfect idea. They were having a wonderful time, talking, eating and joking. How time flew! It started getting dark.
“Hey guys! It’s time to go back,” Tom shouted.
“Mr. Sailor, turn your ship’s wheel and take us back home,” said Adam.
Little did they know they were going to encounter life-threatening challenges ahead. Unknowingly, Nick crossed the danger zone Adam had mentioned earlier. When realizing this, Nick decided to make a turn immediately. Unfortunately, a strange noise came from the engine and then the yacht stopped. Expert at mending machines, Adam offered to examine the engine and asked Nick to fetch the tool box. Nick was hurrying to get it when he slipped, falling into the sea water.
“Nick!” Tom and Adam screamed.
Panicked, Nick started shouting for help. Tom rushed inside the yacht to get a life jacket to rescue Nick, but didn’t find one. Instead, he found a long rope and out he rushed with it.

“How will you afford it?” Jodi asked.
Shanti smiled, “I asked my mom if I could make jasmine garlands (茉莉花环) and sell them at my aunt’s market stall (摊位). Want to do that, too?”
“Good idea!” said Jodi.
Early the next morning, the girls met at the jasmine bushes outside of Shanti’s house. Beautiful white flowers surrounded them with fresh scent. They picked the flowers and dropped them into a basket. Then the girls sat under a tree and knotted(捆扎)the flowers into garlands. Shanti could already see herself hugging that beautiful doll.
“If we sell enough garlands, we can each get a doll, ” said Shanti.
Jodi shook her head. “My family is low on money this week. I’ll use my money to pay for Kiran’s medicine. ” Kiran was Jodi’s little brother. “Is he sick?”
Shanti asked. “He is. But when he gets his medicine, he’ll be fine. ” Jodi picked up her garlands.
“My mother is expecting me. I’ll meet you at the market. ”
Shanti spent the afternoon selling garlands at her aunt’s market stall. But where was Jodi?By early evening Shanti had sold all her flowers.
Shanti was on her way home when she saw Jodi heading to the market with her garlands. “Why are you so late?” Shanti asked.
“I had to watch Kiran while my mother did her work, ” Jodi said.
“Why didn’t you take him with you?” Shanti said.
Jodi shook her head. “He’s too sick to go out. He coughs and coughs. ”
Shanti knew Jodi wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now. The market would be closing soon, Shanti looked at the money in her hand. It was supposed to be for. the beautiful doll she’d been dreaming of for so long. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here, keep this for the medicine. ”
Shanti put her money into Jodi’s hands.
That night, Shanti cried, thinking about the doll. What if someone bought it before she’d saved up enough again?
The next week, while Shanti and Jodi gathered blossoms, Kiran came, too. The medicine had cured his cough, and he helped them sell out all the garlands. When parting, Jodi said, “Shanti, we have prepared something for you. ” But Shanti was so anxious that she didn’t seem to have time to hear them out. She quickly ran to Ramu’s shop, only to find the doll had been sold. Broken﹣hearted, she ran back home and told Mom everything, tears flowing down in flood.

Long ago, in a city lived two boys, Ted and Nick. Ted was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, and never did a day’s hard work. Nick was from a poor family, and often helped his parents when they were busy. Despite all of this, they always played with each other and had much fun. They became best friends.
As time went by, both of them grew up and went to different cities. Busy with their work and life, they didn’t have much time to meet each other and catch up.
One day, Nick fell seriously ill and had a fever. The doctor advised him to lie in bed, having a good rest. When Ted got to know it, he went to Nick’s house to meet him.

The incident took place, believe it or no, on the playground. I was something of a football player, but I had never been a good player, in fact far less a great one. To be frank, I played for the mere physical joy that I got out of the game, but I played with a will, and put my whole heart into the game. I had plenty of energy and enthusiasm for this sport. But undoubtedly, the result was that I was never picked for my college team.
Let me confess frankly that this was only because there was another player in the same position, much better than me. Though I considered myself the better sportsman, he was certainly the greater player. So I never grumbled or complained. I was content to wait for my time. As others knew, I was very patient.
At last my patience was rewarded. It was a special day for me. Our team had shot up the final and was meeting its opponent. Our star-player sent word that he was ill and he could not participate at the last moment, leaving the whole college camp in great astonishment. All the team members thought that the game was almost lost and so did I for this player was our trump(王牌). We were all in low spirits, not knowing what to do with the situation. However, something had to be done. And I realized the moment I was always waiting for came and that I should seize this opportunity to do something for our team and prove myself. I went to the captain and told him I would like to take the place,

Many of the stories that I read on HelpOthers are all about helping other people, doing actsof kindness for someone else. Often times it's easy to forget that no matter who you are, you're not always the giver. Sometimes it's we who receive that random act of kindness. When it happens, it almost feels odd(古怪的) to some extent that you are on the other end-receiving vs giving. In some way, it can be quite a humbling(使谦恭) experience.
My daughter and I had gone into Subway one evening to get sandwiches for the two of us, plus one for my wife. Before going to Subway, I had checked my bank account to make sure that I had money on my debit card. I had moved what I thought to be several hundred dollars to my card. Coming out in a hurry, I never confirmed the transaction and so I actually had no money in my account.
When I stepped up to cash register to pay for our sandwiches, my debit card got rejected. I stood there telling the cashier it had to be a mistake. So they ran it again. REJECTED!!! Well, I was sure most pecple have been in this isort of situation and how embarrassing it could be. Of course, there was a long line of people waiting, hearing this whole thing. Behind me, I noticed there was a young man in his mid-20's. I asked the cashier to hold the sandwiches and that I would come back for them. I went out to my car and called my son, asking him to check my account on line. Well, I learned I never actually moved the money.
I was explaining to my son what he needed to do to put money into my account when all of a sudden there was a knock at my car window. The young man who had been standing behind me in line was standing there holding a bag. I was surprised and wondered what was going on.

The smell of defeat filled the air on a warm October evening. In the school parking lot stood Coach McDonald and me, a loser in the 160-pound weight class.
Coach McDonald’s hands firmly grasped my shoulders, his eyes looking through my uncertainty. “Billy,” his voice cut through the uneasy quiet. “The potential for you to become an excellent wrestler exists. It takes time,” he argued.
“Don’t you see? I lost... again. Ten matches. Never won.” Frustration struck me as I stepped away from Coach McDonald. Pulling my cell phone from my equipment bag, I said definitively, “I need to call my mom. She’ll pick me up.” I just wanted to get away as soon as possible and flung myself into Mom’s arms. She had always been my best friend and supporter.
While waiting for her to answer my call, the thought of quitting the sport rumbled in my mind. I was so frustrated at that time that I ignored the joy and satisfaction wrestling had brought to me.
Coach McDonald closed in. “Billy, look at me,” he said. “Pound for pound, you’re the strongest and most flexible (灵活的) kid on the team. That’s a winning combination. Master the techniques in practice, and victory will be yours, I promise.”
I coughed and pulled my sweaty shirt off my chest. “When, Coach?”
With a knowing look, Coach said, “Do you know how long it took me to win my first match?” He stood up straight, squinting (斜视) like he was recalling a tough time. “During my first year, I lost every match. I ended the season 0-11. I didn’t lose at all in the following two years, including two state championships. Billy, that can be you someday. But it’ll never happen if you quit.”
In that silent moment, I felt a slight pain within me, but it was weak, not strong enough to change my mind. Coach cleared his throat, glancing at his watch. “Well, I’m hungry.”
“And my mom’s here,” I said. Then I jumped into her car.
