When David headed out to work one day at his job as a server in a luxurious restaurant, it seemed like a day like any other. On this particular night, David was placed in the patio section — the busiest part of the restaurant.
As David was running around the restaurant, trying desperately to keep the heaving number of guests satisfied with their food and drinks orders, one particular customer walked in. Richard, a college student at the local Sacramento State University picked a spot on the patio and sat down. He wasn’t just a regular student looking for a cheap night out. He was in fact an accomplished graduate and had come straight to the restaurant to celebrate finishing his senior year. While sitting alone and waiting patiently for his friends to join him, Richard looked around at the restaurant, taking in the relaxing vibe. However, he couldn’t help but notice one person was certainly not getting a chance to relax. He was struck by how hard David seemed to be working.
Finally, Richard’s friends arrived. As it was a special night for them, they really went all out to celebrate with the best and most delicious treats they fancied. Together, they ordered their dinners, and drinks. As Richard and his friends continued to enjoy the evening, he had the opportunity to reflect on his life: Not everyone has the privilege and opportunity to attend college and celebrate the end of senior year with a luxurious dinner of his choice. Similarly, not everyone who has been given these gifts always truly appreciates. Richard had been in David’s shoes before, and worked as a waiter to make ends meet. So he decided to pay a big $382, leaving a tip that equaled the bill itself ($191.35).

In a quiet little village surrounded by rolling hills, Lucy and her brother Max were walking to the family’s strawberry fields to pick some strawberries when they came across an injured baby owl (猫头鹰). The tiny owl was lying on the ground, with one of its wings badly hurt and its big, brown eyes looking helplessly at the teens. Lucy and Max were animal lovers and they knew they had to do something to help the poor, little creature.
“We have to save this baby owl. Max,” Lucy said as she knelt down beside the bird.
Max nodded. “I agree. But where can we take it?”
Lucy thought for a moment and then remembered a wildlife rehabilitation center (野生动物康复) located a few miles away. They quickly placed the baby owl in the small box they had planned to put strawberries in. Max took off his shirt to cover the box to keep the bird warm. They carefully placed the box in their backpack and headed out to the center.
The journey was not without its challenges. The skies suddenly darkened and the rain began to pour down, wetting Lucy and Max completely in seconds. But they were determined to save the baby owl, and so they trudged on (步履艰难地走), searching for shelter from the rain. They finally found a big tree to hide under and huddled (蜷缩) together, trying to keep the box dry:
As the rain continued to fall, Lucy and Max looked at the baby owl in the box. It was so small and weak. They felt a sense of determination and protectiveness towards the little bird. They knew that they had to save it, no matter what.
Gradually, the rain got weaker and Lucy and Max continued their journey. They walked along a winding path, which was wet and slippery. They had to use some tree branches as walking sticks to provide them with extra support and to ensure their stability.

Nada Popovici was at a professional hockey (曲棍球) game. She kept looking at the back of the man’s neck. She wrote a message with the words “mole (痣)”“cancer” and “doctor” on her phone in bright red type. She did it to get the attention of the man, Brian Hamilton. He is an assistant equipment manager for the Vancouver Canucks hockey team.
Mr. Hamilton had a small mole on his neck. It was irregularly shaped and red-brown. These are the signs of a cancerous mole that Ms. Popovici had learned to spot. Maybe he already knew? But if so, why was the mole still there? She thought that Mr. Hamilton did not know.
“I need to tell him.” Ms. Popovici typed a message on her phone. The game ended. After waving at him several times, she finally drew Mr. Hamilton's attention. She placed her phone against the glass. The message read, “The mole on the back of your neck is possibly cancerous. Please go see a doctor!”
Mr. Hamilton looked at the message, rubbed the back of his neck, and kept walking. He was thinking, “Well, that’s strange.”
After the game, Mr. Hamilton went home and asked his partner to spot the mole, and she said she could. He asked the team doctor if it was worrisome. It was. Then after he had it removed, he waited for the biopsy (活检) results. Was the fan sitting behind the team's bench right?
Indeed, Ms. Popovici was correct. She had saved Hamilton’s life. Doctors later told him that it was a type of skin cancer. They said they could remove with ease and treat. But early detection is important. “The sooner you find something, the better it is,” a doctor said.
Mr. Hamilton recalled the doctor telling him, “I am going to diagnose you with cancer. And I am going to cure you of cancer in the same phone call.”
Once he knew he was fine, Mr. Hamilton tried to find the woman he described as “a hero”.

There was a huge pond just a few kilometers from where we stayed. Since moving into our new home in the countryside, my brother, Jim and I used to often sneak out to the pond where we would meet another friend. Mom had warned us not to get close to the pond, especially after a friend informed her that an alligator(鳄鱼) had been spotted there. We ignored her advice though.
On this particular afternoon, the three of us had fun in the pond. As evening approached, we finished swimming. Jim and Syed were unwillingly making their way towards the place where they had left their clothes. I stayed back and was bathing in the water when I suddenly became aware of ripples(涟漪) forming on the surface of the water. I raised my head and looked at the ripples. My eyes caught a motion in the water. A log, I thought. Then I saw it—its scary nose and its two mean eyes. “Jim…” I cried. Then I screamed with all my might.
Jim turned his head in my direction and immediately recognized the danger. “Get out of the water, Jeff. Hurry! It’s just behind you.”
I waded(瞠水) clumsily(笨拙地) in the water. With great effort, I reached the edge of the pond. I looked over my shoulder. Moving quickly towards me was a huge alligator. I froze. Then suddenly I felt a great pain in my leg. Meanwhile, Jim and Syed screamed and started throwing stones at the alligator and managed to distract it. The alligator went for them now. As it opened its jaws, I could see its sharp teeth. I tried to move but a pain shot through me. I was in a pool of blood. Jim and Syed were scared.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Tom, a 15-year-old boy, and his mother Marissa didn’t have much in life, living daily with just enough to eat three meals and pay the bills. Without his mother knowing, Tom had been saving up his pocket money for months to buy her a birthday present. He had collected a total of $25.
As a cleaner at a nearby park, Marissa never took a bus, choosing to walk to and from work to save money. One day, Tom noticed that her mother came home wet to the skin. She told him her umbrella broke because of the strong wind and she wanted to get home in time to have dinner with him.
The following day, his mother woke up with a fever.
“Mom, don’t get up from bed,” Tom told her. “I’ll attend to you today. Here is your medicine,” he said, handing it to her with a glass of water. After Marissa took the medicine, Tom walked to the nearby supermarket to buy something to cook a hot bowl of soup for his mother.
It occurred to him that his mother’s birthday was in a couple of days, so he wanted to get her mother an umbrella first and spend the rest of his money on food.
“What is your strongest umbrella here, sir?” he asked the shop assistant. “I am looking for something that doesn’t break when hit by the wind and something that would last for years.” The man showed Tom some umbrellas in different colors and Tom chose a purple one, which was his mother’s favorite color. It was $22. After checking out, Tom couldn’t help smiling after being able to fit his $25 to buy everything he needed. He even had some money to spare!
While Tom was walking back home, it suddenly started to pour. He ran toward a nearby bus stop to seek shelter when he noticed an old lady walking slowly while everyone around her ran toward shaded areas. Without hesitation, he took the umbrella out of his bag. The old woman was surprised to feel that the rain had stopped suddenly.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________At first, Michael didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home. He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house when they got a call from one of his daughters: “The house next door is on fire!” He went to check. That’s when he saw two women and a girl helpless and heartbroken on their doorway.
“The baby’s in there!” one of the women cried. Though the fire department had been called, Michael, then 64, immediately ran inside. “The baby” was 8-year-old Tiara, the woman’s granddaughter and a playmate of Michael’s three youngest kids.
Entering the burning house was like “running into a bucket of black paint”. The thick smoke caused Michael to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous for anyone, but for Michael, who has severe lung disease, they were life-threatening.
After a few minutes in the smoke-filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath. “Where is Tiara?” he asked desperately.
“The second floor,” her aunt shouted back.
Michael knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long. However, taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming. Yet because the house had a similar design to his, he made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat. He was already out of breath.
“Baby girl, where are you?”
His throat and lungs burned as if he’d inhaled fire instead of the smoke in the air. Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan emerged. Still unable to see, Michael fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl. An unlucky thought crossed his mind: I’m probably gonna die up here.
