High school programs at the National Gallery of Art value depth over breadth, exploring original works of art through a single specific question or theme.
High School Studio Workshops
Single museum visit, 2.5 hours
Grades 9 — 12
These half-day art workshops include an in-depth examination and discussion of works of art in the galleries, followed by behind-the-scenes access to the Education Studio, where students create a related art project.
During the workshop, National Gallery of Art educators will encourage students to look carefully at works of art and then share their responses and develop theories based on their observations.
Students will have the opportunity to create a work of art in the studio inspired by what they have seen in the galleries.
Museum Makers: Exploring Art and Museums
Grades 11 — 12
The Museum Makers program explains how museums operate and what they have to offer. It gives upper-level high school students the tools to experience, understand and interpret art. Participants will gain an insider’s view of how an art museum works.
Students meet for seven Saturday sessions from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Completion of the program requires attendance of all seven sessions.
Creative Writing in the Galleries
Grades 7 — 12, 90 minutes
Students will provide a voice for their personal responses to art through creative writing while looking at a selection of artworks in the galleries. Using close observation, group discussion, and personal reflection, they will be guided through exercises that use different writing forms, including free-form poetry.
A maximum of 30 students (minimum of 15) will be accommodated (容纳) at each session.

Students will learn and experiment with the key building blocks of fiction and be guided through the process of writing and revising their own short stories. At the end of the program, students will emerge more confident in their skills and more connected to a supportive writing community.
Taught by the editors and editorial assistants of Amherst College’s literary magazine, the summer course run Monday-Friday and are open to all high school students.
Fiction Class
Our fiction class guides students through the process of writing a short story. No previous writing experience is necessary. Through daily writing assignments and class meetings, students will learn about the key building blocks of fiction and will each complete their own short story by the end of the course. In addition to submitting daily assignments, students will meet as a group with our instructors online. Students will also meet individually with an instructor to discuss their own short stories, and will not only receive written feedback on their first drafts and final stories, but on all daily assignments.
Students should expect to spend around 3-4 hours each day on their assignments, including meeting times. Class size will be small, and we’ll break into small groups for discussions during each session.
Cost & Scholarships
The cost of the TCYWP two-week program is $725. We hope that no student will let financial difficulty prevent them from applying. Tuition waivers (学费减免) will be awarded to students with strong applications who cannot attend the program without financial assistance. The walls are now covered with beautiful pictures of historical heroes and modern art, thanks to the Mural Arts Program (MAP). Its work makes schools and public places attractive, and its citizens very proud. The program began as part of Philadelphia’s Anti-Graffiti Network. Jane Golden is the MAP’s artistic director. When people ask her what their program is about, she will answer them with one word: hope. Each year, the MAP offers youth art programs and workshops. Some onetime graffiti (涂鸦) writers even help paint MAP murals.
The MAP’s work, says Golden, is all about developing a sense of community. When a neighborhood requests a mural, the MAP works with the people there to develop a message. Some messages have been “Safe Streets,” “Love and Care,” and “Peace Walk. ”
The MAP receives up to 50 requests for murals each week. Last year, the workers painted 140 murals. “The making of a mural enters people’s memory as a special, pleasant moment in neighborhood history” says Golden, who began as a muralist in Los Angeles.
