Hundreds of years old and with a proud Scottish history, reeling(里尔舞) is a type of country dancing that is still popular. Performed by young and old dancers, it often involves at least two couples in each set. A couple is two individual people, either male or female, dancing together.
Scottish reeling is usually quite quick with dancers and couples changing positions, joining and linking with others and having to learn lots of fun moves and routines. It might look complicated to learn, but with practice you can soon pick up the basics. You learn from experienced dancers who will slowly walk you through the steps.
Reeling also means the type of traditional music that accompanies the dances. An accordion(手风琴) often sets the tune for dances. A violin, piano and drums can also be used.
Two of the basic types of steps are travelling and setting steps. Travelling steps move dancers around and include precise hops, skips and placing your feet in certain positions. Setting steps are used for dancing on the spot and typically require a dancer to take a small step to the side, then bring their other foot over and change weight to their other leg.
The circle is an easy dance move. Dancers in a set join hands in a circle and dance round to the left, before going back the other way to finish where they started. This is also known as the hands round-a “four hands round” is done by four dancers, a “six hands round” by six dancers. Other dance moves include the cast, corners, hands across and rights and lefts. You need to keep in time with the music as you dance, which is helped by following what your partner or the other people in your set do.

Many of Gershwin’s songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way—from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition(作曲)with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家)were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages. People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.

An ocean away, in the United States, a German-Jamaican-American family has made performing those dances part of their tradition. Their family name is Von Hendricks. Six years ago, two sisters and their brother formed an African dance company. They named it “Keur Khaleyi,” which means the House of Children in Wolof, a language in the West African nation of Senegal.
The group is based in the eastern U. S. city of Baltimore, Maryland. Its members perform in local and national festivals. They also set up a school to teach dance moves to others recently.
At first, the dance company was made up of two dancers, sisters Jihan and Ayana, and their brother Shakai, who played the drums. Soon, two younger family members joined them. Later, a sister-in-law joined the group.
The family performs dances from Senegal, Mali and Guinea, but has no family ties to those places.
Performing together strengthens family ties and fuels creativity. Shakai said, “Our parents knew what they were doing. They put us into this at a young age to keep us together. ”
The Von Hendricks family uses the dance company to keep generations close. Jihan’s daughter, 13 year old Diallo, dances and plays the drums with the group. She started dancing when she was 18 months old. She says it helped her develop social skills and make friends. She likes everything about performing: the music, the costumes and the feeling of accomplishment.
The Von Hendricks share their joy and knowledge with their neighbors in Baltimore. One of their students is a 71-year old hairstylist, Shakoorah El Sharief. She learned many African dances in the past, but says she likes West African dances best.
“I love everything about it,” she says. “It’s like my medicine. ”
The Von Hendricks’ dream is to teach more members of their community and family about West African dances and drumming.

But because they are made of different molecular (分子的) building blocks, called monomers, they must be sorted into different streams before they can be melted to make new products. Otherwise, their various monomers tend to separate from one another like oil and water.
“Until about a year ago, everybody thought the only thing you could do is take a plastic, break it down to a monomer and then reform it,” says Sanat Kumar, a chemical engineer at Columbia University. “Now we’ve come up with a different way of doing it.” His team has developed a process that allows different kinds of plastic to be recycled together. Their findings, reported recently in Nature, could give new life to many items that end up in landfills.
The new process solves the problem by adding chemicals called universal dynamic cross-linkers to the mix. Just as soap brings together oil and water, these cross-linkers form covalent (共价的) molecular bonds that tie the diverse monomers together. This process creates materials that can keep certain useful properties of each plastic, such as keeping oxygen from passing through. These materials can then be melted and remade again and again because the cross-linkers can break and re-form their bonds.
The researchers hope the technique could eventually help repurpose more plastic waste, and Kumar says the process consumes less energy than breaking plastics down into their original monomers—but it’s not yet cheap enough to be widely used at existing recycling facilities. Still, showing that it works could lead to profitable markets for less expensive recycled plastics, which Kumar says would be one way to help recyclers eventually address the plastic waste crisis. “The plastics problem is huge,” he says, “and you’re going to have to look for multiple solutions.”

Researchers recently discovered that food may actually become more attractive to gulls when the birds observe humans handling it first, according to a 2020 study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science.
Because the birds seem to be attracted to food items that they’ve watched humans touch, another of the study’s authors, says that it’s even more important to properly throw food waste and snack wrappers in the trash. “Our findings suggest that gulls are more likely to approach food that they have seen people drop or put down, so they may associate areas where people are eating with an easy meal,” Dr. Laura Kelley said.
The scientists approached 74 herring gulls in coastal towns in Cornwall, attracting them with weighted bags of fried potatoes. Only 19 gulls were curious or hungry enough to linger (逗留), allowing the scientists to place the bag on the ground and move back a short distance away, waiting to see if a gull would approach.
Their experiments showed that gulls were more cautious about approaching a tempting treat (诱饵) if there was a person nearby who was watching them closely. However, the scientists also found that far fewer of the birds than expected showed interest in investigating the food at all when being stared at.
In fact, people may be able to protect their lunches from gulls by avoiding areas where the birds tend to gather and keeping a closer eye on their meals, she added. “Gulls have a bad reputation but, like all animals, they are just trying to survive,” Goumas said. “We can try to soften the conflict we have with them by making changes in our own behavior.”

Most parents and educators agree that praise is developing children's confidence, so the more praise, the better. Although praise is obviously good for children, if adults praise everything children do, the praise can finally lose its effect—youngsters will constantly seek praise.
Rather than responding to all of children's work with phrases such as “Good job” or “Nice work”, teachers should consider comments that describe the contents and encourage children to continue to improve, the researchers advise.
“Too much praise doesn't make children happier, achieve more or become more capable,” said Marshall Duke, a psychologist. Identifying a child's strengths and developing those strengths help build confidence more than constant praise does. Praise also loses its effect if the praise is the same for all the students. For example, if all the students in a class are told their paintings are great and students know some are better than others, the praise will lose its meaning.
“There is a need to have more room on either side of 'good'.” said Duke. “It's necessary to make detailed comments. Saying the truth properly is far more beneficial than empty praise.”
Adults have gotten into the habit of not telling children when they are wrong, and that will not help them deal with problems. Duke added, “That's not how the world is.”
1. What will be the result if parents praise their children too much?A.They will always seek praise. | B.They will get very tired of it. |
C.They will do better in their studies. | D.They won't get along well with others. |
