The power of silence
Joe was an old man aged 75. His children grew up and moved to different cities in pursuit of a good career and future. He lived in a small village carrying the memories of his deceased wife. Joe had 4 grandchildren and they used to visit him during their holidays. And it was the vacation time and Joe was eagerly waiting for his grandchildren. He was making preparations for their arrival, cleaning the house, mowing (修剪) the lawn, rearranging the household items and buying snacks and dresses for the children, etc.
However, in the busy arrangements, he lost his favorite watch, which was given by his late wife when their first child was born. Joe treasured the watch and it became his only companion (伴侣) after his wife’s death. He didn’t realize that he had lost the watch and received the kids happily at home. It was only the next day when he was about to take a bath that he remembered the watch was missing. He was shocked and very upset. His grandchildren asked him why he was so sad and what troubled him.
Joe said, “Dear children, I lost the most precious watch I have ever had in my life. It was gifted by your grandma and I lost it while cleaning the house. I feel like I’m missing my heart.” Joe was in tears and the children promised him that they would find the watch for him.
One granddaughter, Mary, asked, “Grandpa, do you remember when you saw the watch last before you lost it?” Joe said, “I guess when I was cleaning the barn.”
The children immediately began to search for the watch in the barn. The barn was full of waste materials, books, broken furniture, etc. They searched for more than three hours with the help of Joe, but failed.

In my first years of college, I was still an angry adolescent. I hated my father for his controlling ways and I wanted to break free from his grasp. One day, I had a serious fight with him, and I stormed out of the house, missing my bus to school. As I walked towards the classroom, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten to bring the assignment that was due: a thought card.
Professor Simon had explained that every Tuesday we must bring along a thought card, on which we wrote a thought, a concern, a question or anything that was on our mind and that he would return the card every Wednesday with his comment or answer on it. He stressed that the card was our admission to class on Tuesdays. Now, I raced down the hallway, ten minutes late to class. Just outside the door, I took out a thought card and wrote on it “I am the son of an IDIOT!”, as I could only think about the conflict I’d just had with my dad. Then I dashed into the room, handed the card to Professor Simon and took my seat. The moment I reached my seat, I regretted telling him that about my dad. I didn’t want to expose myself to him.
On the Wednesday morning I got to the class early and hid in the back. Professor Simon began returning our thought cards. On my card was written, “What does ‘the son of an idiot’ do with the rest of his life?” His question got right to the heart of the issuer: Whose problem was it? Whose responsibility was it?
Professor Simon’s comment kept coming up in my mind over the next few weeks. “What does ‘the son of an idiot’ do with the rest of his life?” The question gnawed at (困扰) me, like a mouse gnawing at a rotten piece of wood until it finally falls apart. It was a simple question, but it opened up a Pandora’s box of emotions and thoughts.

Golden Girl
When your mother enters her ninth decade, you make a point of being a little extra careful for any signs of decline—memory loss, repetition and the like.
Thankfully, my mother has been blessed with good health, and her mental state seems to have remained alright. But when she got inked at such an advanced age, I had to wonder.
My mother looks just like many grandmothers, short, slightly fat and white-haired. She’s rosy-cheeked and jolly, and when she laughs her eyes almost seem to disappear behind her fleshy cheeks. She comes from an old, traditional family. She was a career civil servant. In short, she didn’t do crazy suff.
That all changed a few years ago. She began to surprise my older brother and me with what she described as “independence.” At the time, we merely saw them as examples of irresponsibility and possibly age-related questionable judgment.
In early 2015, the year she turned 75, she informed us she’d booked a seven-night trip to Turkey. Alone. Because she had never been. Of course, that was astonishing. There was no way my brother and I could allow that. A shaky little old lady wandering the streets of Istanbul on her own, not speaking a word of Turkish, with no knowledge of the laws and customs of the land—it was out of the question!
She paid no attention to us. Off she went. When she returned, she told us it had been a wonderful success. As it turns out, she had barely spent any time alone after hiring a taxi driver to show her around Istanbul for a few days. He took her to open-air markets, parks, and restaurants. He introduced her to a rug(小地毯)seller named Mustafa, “a lovely fellow,” and she bought some rugs. The seller had taken her address details and promised to ship the rugs home. The seller and my mother apparently struck up quite a friendship and she had told him to please drop by if he were ever in Canada. My mother beamed as she told this story.

My leacher asked for the moment in which “you fell the best; you fell that you had the world in the palms of your hand.” Some described amazing awards; other described winning a tournament. My answer, however, invited giggles and hesitant smiles. Why? Because I felt the best when I first learned how to ride my bike at thirteen. I didn’t mind my classmates’ stares and mockery, because I knew there was more to the story.
My elder sister and I shared a typical sisterly relationship: we couldn’t stand each other. I was an annoyance to her. Any sort of conversation we had usually ended up fighting. Gradually, I started to learn to be totally indifferent; perhaps the silent treatment would get more approval. I was wrong. We soon fell into a sad pattern. I avoided her, and she ignored me. Deep inside, it hurt. So that was how it was between us. She was only a sister in name. I truly believed that we would forever be apart, two housemates without conversation, two strangers without warmth.
I still remember the day I learned to ride a bike. I had received the bike that Christmas, which was great, until I realized that I had no idea how to ride it. My mom had long abandoned any attempt to teach me. I had proven to be a frustrating student. I took it upon myself to learn, a little bit each day. It was no different. I was coming to the end of my daily one-hour torture(折磨). I was so frustrated that I threw my bike aside and began to cry.

The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday. I had to leave my home to go to First Nations University, to sign a financial aid check for a student. As the finance director, I wanted to get it to him quickly, despite the approaching snowstorm. Little did I know that this decision would lead me to an unexpected meeting with André Bouvier aged 75 and his wife.
I figured I had enough time to make the trip safely. When I arrived at the office, my colleague cosigned the check and left. As I packed up, I noticed he had left his laptop bag in my office. I called him and offered to bring it to him. even though it was already late afternoon. To avoid the potentially dangerous road conditions on the highway. I decided to take the country roads to his home. On the way, I stopped to buy a cellphone charger, filled up my SUV with gas, and picked up pizzas. It took me about 15 minutes to drop off the laptop case at my colleague’s house.
As I got back on the road, the snow started falling heavily. Within minutes, I was in a whiteout (乳白天空) . The snowstorm came down fast, the wind screaming. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow, so I opened the driver’s side window to better see the road’s edge. However, I became disoriented (迷失方向) and unsure of my location. Fearful of driving into a farmer’s field, a ditch, or worse, I decided to stop.
I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911. The dispatcher (调度员) advised me to wait until morning for assistance due to the dangerous conditions. Those seconds after the call were extremely painful. Getting out to walk in a whiteout with zero visibility (能见度) and high winds—when I didn’t even know where I was—wasn’t an option. Breathe, I told myself. Panicking won’t help.
It was now about 6 p.m. and dark, and I worried about the visibility of my black SUV in the whiteout. Feeling helpless, I shared my location on Google Maps and posted a screenshot of where I was on Facebook, seeking help from anyone familiar with the area. Soon enough, people started to respond.

Most mornings, the sun rose to greet the day and the bird sang its songs outside an upstairs window of the house. Inside the house Ollie and Noah would wake up. The brother and sister usually got along very well. They took turns nicely with the bathroom. They said “please” and “thank you at breakfast. They often sat together on the school bus. And after school they worked together happily on their special project — their own backyard house.
But one gray morning they didn’t get along well at all! Maybe it was the weather, or maybe it was because the bird slept late. But whatever it was, they got into a big fight.
Noah opened her eyes and stretched. Then she sat up and let her legs dangle (垂悬) over the edge of her bed-right in Ollie’s face. She didn’t do it to be rude. It was just one of those things that happens with bunk beds (双层床).
But that morning Ollie was not in a very good mood.
“Noah!” he shouted. “Get your stupid feet out of my face!”
“My feet aren’t stupid, and they’re not in your face!” she shouted back
Before Ollie could answer, she skipped into the bathroom ahead of him. She took a very long time brushing her teeth, washing up, and combing her hair.
“You’d better come out of that bathroom!” shouted Ollie, banging on the door.
“Ollie,” said Mama, coming out of her bedroom, “you know better than to shout at your sister.”
“But she’s taking too long in the bathroom,” complained Ollie, “and she’s doing it on purpose!”
When Ollie raised his fist to bang on the door again, it opened and out came Noah, all dressed up.
“Good morning, Mama,” she said, as nice as you please.
“Gr-r-r!” said Ollie.

Ever since he was little, dogs have been his greatest passion. He often growled (低吼) and barked and sometimes moved around the house on all fours. His parents brought in a little brown female dog named Lynn. Tom was on cloud nine. One day, this little boy, together with Lynn, was sitting quietly down by the side of the street when suddenly a giant dog walked across him. He was a little surprised and started screaming as loudly as he could! All of this frightened Lynn away immediately.
Tom’s parents tried to see what the chances were of Lynn coming home on her own. But five days later, there was still no sign of Lynn. The boy didn’t just have tears streaming down his cheeks — his parents were saddened too.
The woods behind their home stretched for over 50 miles! Together with their neighbors, they searched for over a month. But Lynn was gone. Tom’s parents wanted to choose a new puppy for him. But no dog could replace Lynn for him.
Tom was not the same boy. He locked himself in his room. He seemed to have lost his love for dogs. He could not focus his attention on his classes so he didn’t want to go to school. He would easily get angry with people around him. Tom changed from a happy, smiling boy to an upset and annoying kid.
Tom’s parents wanted him to stay home and he had been studying at home ever since. His parents accompanied him almost every day, but staying home didn’t help much. The boy’s mother worried a lot. One rainy afternoon, she saw him staring out the window. “I miss Lynn so much. I wonder if everything is okay with her?” It had been a long time since his beloved dog ran away, but Tom’s despair was as great as the day it happened. Days later, Tom walked out the front door with his head down and sat by the side of the street.
