I’d just returned from a beautiful autumn early-morning walk with my dog. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. When I discovered I didn’t have them, I decided to return to the paths we’d taken. I would surely spot them in plain sight.
My little dog ran in circles of excitement that we would do a repeat of our just-finished outing. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but without luck.
At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch tired. At my age, one hiking is usually plenty! I began to make a list of the keys. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one takes a lot of time. I had a spare car key, but it was sensitive, and the key chain would be expensive to replace. But the iron heart made by my grandfather was precious beyond measure. For some reason, thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. I blamed myself for losing the keys and not being more careful. In my head, I retraced my steps again and again but finally gave up.
That night, it turned colder and we had a snow storm. I enjoyed a comfort-food dinner, played soft music, and settled into a peaceful evening. It was peaceful until I heard my car alarm coming from the garage. I rushed to the car, inserted the key in the door and finally opened it, and then moved it in the ignition (引擎) until the alarm stopped. I felt red-faced as I imagined my next door neighbors being annoyed. I went back in the house but it started again. I turned it off, went back inside, and the alarm sounded again. I repeated the process.

They were at their final practice of the season when they heard cries for help from their school’s parking lot.

It turned out a 16-year-old student visiting Valley High School was accidentally hit by a car in the lot, and she was stuck under the vehicle. In a panic, the mother backed her vehicle up without realizing that her daughter was right behind the car, and the girl became trapped underneath.
It did not take long before around a dozen of the baseball players ran out there as a team. There was no one really saying much. The guys just got around the car and helped lift the four-door car off the girl, whose upper body was trapped under the back part of the car. The teams’ assistant coach James Millholland was then able to pull her to safety. “With all the team work we had going on, it didn’t feel heavy,” said player Sukhminder Gill. “It felt like we could pick anything up at that moment.”
Sawyer and Millholland weren’t able to get through to 911 on their cell phones, so they ran to their classrooms to call for help. Finally, medical care personnel arrived and transported the girl to a local hospital. Sawyer heard she was expected to recover, which was a great relief.

Russ Fee was asleep inside his tent last summer when a series of screams jolted him awake. Throwing on his shoes, he ran out to investigate. Fee and his wife were traveling through Canada’s Banff National Park to enjoy its stunning beauty and awesome wildlife. It was the latter he now encountered. Although it was dark, Fee could detect a neighboring tent in a mess. Backing out was a wolf, dragging something in his teeth. That thing was a man.
Moments earlier, Elisa and Matt Rispoli, from New Jersey, were asleep with their two young children when the wolf tore into their tent. It was like something out of a horror movie. For three minutes Matt threw his body in front of Elisa and the boys who would stand little chance of running faster than a wolf and fought the wolf with bare hands. Atone point, Matt got the upper hand, pinning the wolf to the ground. But the wolf clamped its jaw onto Matt’s arm, set its powerful legs, and began tugging Matt outside while Elisa was pulling on his legs trying to get him back.
It was then that Russ Fee entered the picture. He ran at the beast, kicking it like he was kicking in a door. The wolf dropped Matt and merged from the tent. Wolves are large, Fee felt like he had punched someone that was way out of his weight class. He could feel its heavy breath facing and he could smell the terrible pungent (刺激性) ordor it emitted fishy, oily and bloody.
The wolf turned its anger on Fee, exposing his sharp teeth and snarling at him. Terrified, Fee withdrew a bit. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw his minivan was not far away. Meanwhile, panicked as they were, the two boys concealed themselves at a safe distance from the battle. The elder boy used the satellite phone to call for help.

Michael, a 58-year-old man, lives in one of the most magical places in the world, Honolulu, Hawaii, which is known as an ideal vacation spot for most Americans. He gets to call this place home. But he has difficulty finding a regular place to live in. Being a homeless man, he usually sleeps on the streets and beaches of Honolulu.

Several days ago, when Michael was hitting some baseballs, he lost one in a narrow gap between the parking garage and a drug store next door. He kept on playing. After losing a total of six balls, he decided to go down to get them. The gap was so narrow that he wasn’t sure whether he could squeeze in (挤进去). But realizing those baseballs were his only possessions, he finally made up his mind to have a try.
Michael made his way down the gap, but things turned tricky. He saw it was narrow at the bottom but he thought he was thin enough to enter it. Moments later, he let out an “uh oh”. Beyond his expectation, the space was too small for him to fit. However, he kept going with his eyes on his baseballs. He whispered, “Don’t give up. They are all I have.”
As Michael went down a little lower and lower, he realized that there was no way to return. He had to wait for somebody to rescue him. As he didn’t bring his mobile phone along, he had to shout as loudly as he could. However, there was no one answering him. Half an hour later, he felt extremely thirsty. He was very tired and afraid that he could no longer hold on. Just when he was about to give up, he heard the sound of footsteps was approaching.
