It is no secret that China has an    1    (incredible) rich, complex and ancient history and culture. My first exposure     2    Chinese culture came at a very early age, totally by chance.

At 8, I walked into a bookshop and picked a book entitled Tao Te Ching, a deeply philosophical book of Taoism. As     3    8-year-old, the book’s content was obviously lost on me, but it provided me with an early connection to a profound philosophical tradition by     4    I am still influenced today.

At school I began studying Chinese. My interest in the language developed early on,    5    (combine) my love of travelling with my love of meeting new people. I am lucky enough to have lived in China for three years. It was a good opportunity for me to experience the    6    (diverse) of Chinese customs and tradition. Culture and food are closely connected and perhaps nowhere else can this be seen more clearly    7    in China. In recent years there    8    (be) a rise in restaurants offering a variety of foods here. I have introduced many of my friends to Chinese history and culture through a    9    (share) love of food.

It is safe to say that my journey has only just begun. These first steps are only a drop in the ocean of lifelong learning, but as the Chinese philosopher Laozi said, “A journey of a thousand miles    10    (begin) with a single step.”

Locals jokingly call Munich “the village of a million people”. Although it is Germany's third     1    (large) city, Munich is sleepy and quiet for most of the year. However, once a year during Oktoberfest, it becomes the setting for a giant party,     2    (attract) visitors from all over the world.

Lasting 16 days and ending     3    the first Sunday in October, Oktoberfest started in 1810 as part of a festival to celebrate the     4    (marry) of Prince Ludwig. Though the dances and horse races were not repeated, locals liked the beer and food so much that they turned this festival into     5    tradition.

During the festival, people gather in the beer hall or huge tents     6    (sample) beer from every part of Germany. Over six million litres of beer     7    (drink)—enough to fill up 16 swimming pools! Don't forget to try some     8     (taste) white sausages, potato soup and hendl, or whole roasted chicken, when you are enjoying your drink.

While you are there, check out some of Munich's     9    (sight). Marienplatz is the city's main square. It dates from 1158 and is     10    you will find the city's most beautiful buildings. And be sure to visit Munich's parks, which are some of Europe's best.

Morley Safer has worked in television news for 61 years. He’s spent 46 of those years on his broadcast, longer than anyone else. As a     1     (travel), he holds some sort of record,     2     (take) planes, trains, boats, even bicycles to the ends of the Earth.

When he was 24, a door opened that would change his life. He was hired     3     a television news writer at the CBC, Canada's premier broadcasting network. And soon enough, he was     4     foreign correspondent(记者), the job he’d dreamed of. His passport filled up quickly. In late 1963, Morley caught the eye of the American network leaders,     5     hired him to join the great CBS bureau in London. From his base in London, he covered shooting wars in Algeria and Cyprus.

By the time he was 35, he     6     (cover) news in Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It’s fair     7     (say) that nobody alive today has seen as much and reported on it as       8    (brilliant) as Morley. Simply by example, he’s made the rest of us better journalists. Lin Qiaozhi is known     1     the “mother of ten thousand babies”     2     she had delivered over 50,000 babies in her lifetime. When she was 18 years old, she chose     3    (study) medicine instead of following the traditional path of marriage like the majority of girls. Eight years     4    , she graduated from Peking Union Medical College and immediately became the first woman     5     (hire) as a resident physician in the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital. After working for several years, she     6     (send) to study in Europe and then in 1939, in the US. She left such a good     7     (impress) on her American colleagues that they invited her to stay .However, Lin rejected the offer and returned to China. Then during the war, she opened her own clinic to help the patients. After the foundation of the new People’s Republic of China, she held many important     8     (position), but she was more interested in     9     (tend) patients. Dr Lin didn’t retire     10     the day she died, 22 April 1983.
