An advertising slogan(广告标语) is to a brand what eyes are to a person. The slogan helps people understand the brand better by telling them what it wants to sell to its customers. Good slogans leave a message inside people’s minds. It’s almost certain that every brand has a popular slogan.
Here are a few examples:
“Just do it!”-This slogan speaks out to teens. It tells them to do something, but only if they think it’s worth it. And if so, why not do it wearing Nike?
“Always Coca-Cola.”-Coke’s slogans change every few years, but this one has enjoyed a lasting popularity because it shows the brand’s spirit. It seems to say “Coke is the only drink there is; there are no other forms of drinks.”

The first hint of trouble for Ottawa’s Bluesfest, an outdoor festival that draws around 300,000 people each year, came last week after workers at the site found one of the birds. It had laid four eggs nearby, effectively claiming the main stage area as its nesting ground. “This is one of the most challenging problems we’ve been presented with, but we feel we can work through this,” said Mark Monahan, executive director of the festival.
“Anything that changes the schedule has a major effect, so we’re taking it very seriously.” The discovery meant that government officials rushed to protect the nest and the eggs, hiring a security guard to watch over them 24 hours a day. Environmentalists were also brought in.
“We don’t know when the eggs might hatch,” said Monahan. What is known is that the young killdeer will likely leave the nest soon after they are hatched, leading many to hope that the eggs hatch in the next day or so.
The festival is now seeking permission from Environment Canada to relocate the nest some 50 meters away or take it to a wildlife center. Moving the nest would also ensure the bird and its young would be protected during the festival’s 11-day run, said Monahan. It’s highly likely that the festival’s thousands of attendees would cause huge problems for the bird and its eggs.
Monahan was confident that the festival would go on as planned, however. “Most of the people we’re working with are looking for a positive solution,” Monahan said. “There is no one saying that the festival can’t go on.”
As news of the dilemma spread, it left residents divided. Some supported the bird, saying that moving the nest might result in the eggs being abandoned. Others expressed annoyance that protecting the eggs of the small bird, which is widespread across North America, was risking an annual festival that contributes millions of dollars to the local economy.
The killdeer’s tendency to build its nest in open fields or flat areas has caused issues in other areas of the US: earlier this year, construction on a health center in Wisconsin was temporarily stopped after a killdeer and its four eggs were discovered.

Some corners of the Western Sahara, found along the northwestern coast of Africa, are littered with hundreds of ancient stone monuments from centuries worth of human culture, some of which date back to over 10,000 years ago.
Between 2002 and 2009, the Western Sahara Project, led by the University of East Anglia in the UK, documented the archaeology(考古学) and environment of northwestern Sahara around the town of Tifariti. The monuments come in a variety of forms and were constructed by a number of different cultures across the centuries. Many appear to be little more than long rows of piled rocks, while others are purposefully placed large stones standing proudly in a circular pattern. Others are 5-meter-high (16 feet) dry stone wall constructions that could have only been built by human hands.
It’s unclear what most of the monuments are meant to represent, although most are assumed to be burial mounds(墓冢), used as part of a funerary ceremony, or sign at the presence of a grave. This desire to construct burial mounds is something that can be found in countless cultures across the planet, from the Scythians of ancient Siberia to the sea-faring Vikings of northern Europe, and it looks like the ancient people of Western Sahara were not different.
For one reason or another, this natural basin area managed to remain a place of human activity over the millennia, especially when times became tough in the surrounding areas. "One of our theories is that as the Sahara dried between five and six thousand years ago—this is one of the refugia(避难所), an area where water remained," Joanne Clarke, prehistoric archaeologist at the University of East Anglia, told Atlas Obscura.
1. How were the monuments constructed?A.They are in different shapes. |
B.They are piled up on one another. |
C.They took about 500 years to complete. |

Many people believe that confident people think more highly of themselves, while those who have low self-respect think less of their good qualities. However, a new study says it might not be true, reported The Guardian.
The study was done by Jonathan Freeman, a psychology (心理学) professor from the University of London, the UK. He found that 98 percent of British people consider themselves to be among the nicest 50 percent of the population.
In the study, Freeman first asked some people to rate (评级) their own niceness. Then he got people to answer questions like “Do you give directions to strangers?” and “Have you ever donated blood?”. The results showed that people are not as nice as they think they are. Two thirds of them seldom helped others carry heavy shopping bags, and only a quarter of them donated blood.
In another study by psychologists from universities in Chicago and Virginia, the US, some people were shown pictures of themselves. Some pictures had been slightly changed to make them appear more attractive. When asked to pick the unchanged pictures, people usually chose the more attractive ones.
So, why do we think we’re nicer than we actually are? There are many theories. A popular one says we unconsciously (无意识地) cheat ourselves, so that we can get confidence without knowingly lying to ourselves or each other.
How can we solve it? Other studies show that there is a simple way: feedback (反馈). Compare others’opinion toward yourself with your own and you will see a clearer picture.
1. What did the new study find?A.The more confident people are, the more good qualities they have. |
B.Most of the people with low-respect are not nice. |
C.People with great confidence do not like those with low-respect. |
D.People are nicer in their own eyes than they really are. |
A.Because they were not happy with their own looks. |
B.Because they wanted themselves to look good. |
C.Because they lied to themselves without knowing it. |
D.Because they were not able to tell the difference. |
A.How to be a nice person. | B.People’s opinion of their own niceness. |
C.Others’ opinions toward you. | D.How to know ourselves well. |
