Celebrated on June16th, World Sea Turtle Day is a day dedicated to one of the world’s oldest and most fascinating creatures. Unfortunately, this is also a day to remind everyone of the sea turtle’s endangered status.

Sea turtles have been around since the time of dinosaurs. They typically live to between 30 and 50 years of age, spending most of their lives at sea. Part of the reptile(爬行动物) family, sea turtles can hold their breath for up to five hours. This comes in handy since some species can dive as deep as 1,000 meters below the water’s surface before needing to come up for air. Sea turtles also like to get around, often migrating very long distances. One species can migrate over 12,000 km from nesting beaches in Japan all the way to feeding grounds near Mexico.

Female sea turtles return to the beach they hatched on to nest. Some species lay up to 250 eggs in a single nest, and each egg takes around 60 days to incubate(孵化). However, it’s estimated that only one in a thousand baby turtles can survive to adulthood.

Although it is worth having a day to celebrate these magnificent animals, World Sea Turtle Day also has a more serious purpose: to raise awareness of their difficult situation. Sea turtles are threatened with extinction. Plastic trash is a big problem because the turtles often mistake bags and other plastic items for food like jellyfish. In fact, half of all sea turtles have consumed plastic at some time in their lives.

Rising global temperature is another threat facing turtles. Turtle eggs that lie on warm sand are more likely to result in female turtles, which affects the animal’s diversity. Also, trash-covered beaches can make it hard for baby turtles to reach the sea.

However you want to celebrate World Sea Turtle Day, take some time to spread the word about what we can do to protect these ancient animals. Reducing the amount of plastic we use is just one small way we can help make sure sea turtles stick around for another 100 million years.

【推荐1】Many animals need to move across large distances. Often they do this as part of their natural migration(迁徙). Sometimes animals need to move to a new area when food gets low or conditions get worse. However, humans have taken over huge areas of the planet. Roads and highways cut up the remaining natural areas into many small sections, making it dangerous for animals to move.

Many people are working to help animals by creating “wildlife corridors(走廊)”, trying to reconnect smaller natural areas so that animals can move over larger areas. One important step in creating these corridors is building wildlife bridges and tunnels to give animals a way to safely cross dangerous roads. These changes don’t just help animals, but they also save human lives by avoiding accidents.

On China's Hainan Island, scientists created a bridge for gibbons, an animal that lives in southern Asia. But in 2014, natural accidents caused huge gaps in the forest, forcing them to make dangerous jumps. Scientists created a simple and cheap bridge, which solved the problem. In 2018, the experts in Utah, America built a wildlife bridge over the busy highway. A 4.8-kilometer fence was created to help guide animals to the bridge. Normally, animals take a long time to discover and begin using wildlife bridges, so experts didn’t expect the bridge to get much traffic for several years. However, to their surprise, many different kinds of animals have already used the bridge.

Now people in other countries are looking to try similar ideas. In Brazil, scientists want to create bridges to help animals cross the hundreds of miles of highway that cuts through the Amazon rainforest. In Uttarakhand, India, an eco-bridge made from all-natural materials has been built. Though it's high in the trees, it’s expected to help smaller animals on the ground by reminding drivers that they're in an important natural area with lots of wildlife. Already, the bridge has got a lot of attention, with many people taking selfies(自拍照)in front of it.

1. Why are the wildlife corridors created?
A.To avoid the attack from animals.B.To offer a way to protect animals.
C.To improve animals' living conditions.D.To bring more convenience to humans.
2. How does the bridge in Utah surprise the experts?
A.Animals need no guide to it.B.Animals take more time to cross it.
C.It has made the traffic dangerous.D.It is used by many animals sooner.
3. What do we know about the eco-bridge in India?
A.It has become a hit for tourists.B.It is made of man-made materials.
C.It acts as a reminder for the hunter.D.It serves as a sign of a natural area.
4. How is the text mainly developed?
A.By making a comparison.B.By listing some examples.
C.By showing causes and effects.D.By following the order of time.

【推荐2】Something’s happening at the lowest point on our planet.

The Dead Sea, a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and Palestine to the west, is shrinking(缩小) at an alarming rate-----about 3.3 feet per year, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. And human actions are largely to blame.

“It’s not just like one country is punishing the Dead Sea; it’s more like the whole area,” said photographer Mortize Kustner, who visited the area in February to work on his series “The Dying Dead Sea”.

The Dead Sea needs water from the other natural sources surrounding it, such as the Jordan River basin. But around the 1960s, some of the water sources it relied on were diverted(使改道). Israel, for instance, built a pipeline during that time so it could supply water throughout the country.

Mineral extraction(开采) industries are another main reason the water levels are falling, experts say. The Dead Sea’s minerals have been used as medicine and can often be found in cosmetics(化妆品) and other consumer products.

And then, of course, there’s the Middle East’s hot, dry climate, which makes it difficult for the lake to replenish itself.

Last year, Israel and Jordan signed a $900 million deal in an effort to keep the Dead Sea’s water levels stable(稳定). It includes building a canal from the Red Sea to the Dead Sea which would be able to not only supply water to Israel and Jordan but also to pump water into the Dead Sea.

But for now, Kustner shows us that the Dead Sea remains very much a place of interest, with people from all over the world going there to swim in its salty waters.

The Dead Sea, known as the Salt Sea in the language of Hebrew, is one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world. And because of what has been happening over the years, the salt is only getting saltier.

1. Which of the following is NOT a reason for the Dead Sea’s shrinking mentioned in the text?
A.Some of its water sources being diverted.
B.The extraction of the minerals in the sea.
C.Visitors from all over the world swimming in it.
D.The hot, dry climate in the Middle East.
2. What can we learn about the Dead Sea’s minerals?
A.They have practical value.
B.They are controlled by Israel.
C.They can be extracted very easily.
D.They are mainly used in heavy industries.
3. What does the underlined word “replenish” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.To clean something.B.To improve something.
C.To fill something again.D.To find something again.
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.What we should do to save the Dead Sea
B.More people travel to the Dead Sea
C.Why the Dead Sea is salty
D.The Dead Sea is drying out

1    over 45 percent of China’s land is covered with deserts and sandy soil, way bigger than China’s arable land (可耕地) which is nearly 10 percent of the total arable land in the world, but supports over 20 percent of the world’s population

March 12 marks China’s Tree Planting Day.    2    . At the time, a forestry expert suggested designating (定义) the Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, as the National Tree Planting Day. After the death of Sun Yat-sen on March 12, 1925, the National Tree Planting Day was changed to fall on March 12 to remember Sun’s support for national afforestation (植树造林).

Since the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949, the Chinese government has continued to use the day to honor Sun’s contribution to the country.    3

In 2019,a research team of Boston University found that the global green leaf area has increased by five percent since the early 2000s.     4     , they thought it was because of a “warmer, wetter climate and fertilization from the added carbon dioxide in the atmosphere”. But with a two-decade-long data (数据) record from NASA, they see that humans are contributing.    5    .

In 2021,China planted 3.6 million hectares of forest and changed 380,800 hectares of farmland into forest. The country plans to plant 6.4 million hectares of trees and grass this year.

A.Chinese people like planting trees
B.When they first noticed the difference
C.Unfamiliar to many, the tradition dates back to 1915
D.And Chinese people voluntarily planted over 64 billion trees from 1982 to 2012
E.Trees play a very important role in protecting the environment
F.The data shows that at least 25 percent of that gain came from China
G.A surprising fact is that though covering about 9.6 million square kilometers of land
