Washington, DC—In a press conference today, the National Gallery of Art will share groundbreaking new findings about Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) to be explored in the exhibition of Vermeer’s Secrets, opening on October 8, 2022.

These findings led a team of professors and scientists working together to determine that the painting Girl with a Flute was made by a partner of Vermeer-not by the Dutch artist himself, as was previously believed.

This challenges the long-held belief that he was alone genius and, instead, assumes him as an instructor to the next generation of artists. In part because Vermeer’s collection of works contains only about 35 accepted paintings, professors have generally considered it unlikely that he had students or partners. With no surviving documents to provide evidence of a workshop, it was believed that he must have worked alone.

The existence of other artists working with Johannes Vermeer is perhaps one of the most significant new findings about the artist to be discovered in decades. It changes thoroughly the popular understanding of Vermeer, building on decades of research and using advanced scientific technology to expose exciting discoveries that add new knowledge to the secret artist. “I am unbelievably proud of the team of National Gallery staff who worked together to study these paintings,” said Kay win Feldman, director of the National Gallery of Art.

On view through January 8, 2023, Vermeer’s Secrets offers audiences a behind-the-scenes look at how National Gallery professors and scientists studied the museum’s four treasured paintings—as well as two 20th-century fake(假的) copies—to understand “what makes a Vermeer a Vermeer”.

Research also led scientists to determine that Vermeer’s Girl with the Red Hat was made at a turning point in the artist’s career. They recognized Girl with the Red Hat as a key work that points to Vermeer’s late style.

A.To guide us to enjoy Vermeer’s paintings.

【推荐1】One night in 1966, Michael Chapman rushed into a folk-music club in Cornwall, England to get out of the rain, and soon found himself onstage playing the guitar.

“They offered me a job to play for the rest of the summer. And I’ve been playing ever since,” Chapman says. “I’ve told that story so many times, but it’s absolutely true. If it hadn’t been raining that night, I wouldn’t be talking to you.”

The British guitar player has spent the 50 years since then on the road. He released some praised albums in the 1970s, but his health went downhill in the 80s and 90s. Like a lot of British artists in the 1960s, Chapman taught himself to play the guitar by listening to American jazz and blues records.

Chapman actually taught photography, but quit when he was 26 to play music full time. When he was starting out, he was often compared to other British acoustic guitar heroes of the time, like John Martyn and Bert Jansch.

“The fascinating thing about Michael Chapman is that he doesn’t fit in with those guys of his generation,” says Andrew Male, a music journalist. “He’s always been an outsider. He never moved to London. ”

And while he never became part of the London music scene, Chapman was noticed by those musicians. “The 70s caught up with him in the 80s,” Male says. “He had a huge heart attack at the end of the 80s that nearly finished him off. When he made his way back into the world in the early 90s, people had forgotten about him.” But not everyone. A younger generation of musicians in America, including Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and a younger singer and guitarist named Steve Gunn, recently rediscovered Chapman.

“We wanted to capture Michael’s voice and character where he is now. You know, it’s a little road-weary, but he still has it,” Gunn says. “For me, it was really important to get that right.” “He’s the right old musician for present times,” Male says. “I think the music he makes seems quite in tune with where we’re at.”

D.He is one of the best guitar players in the early 90s.
3. Why did Michael Chapman quit his music career once?
A.He lost his special voice.B.He suffered from a severe heart attack.
C.He got tired of competing with others.D.He was almost forgotten by everyone.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Rise and Fall of Guitar MusicB.The Sad Story of a Guitar Musician

【推荐2】Great painter Salvador Dali once said, “A true artist is not one who is inspired, but one who inspires others.” These words perfectly describe V Umapathy, an art teacher from Puducherry, India, who instills (灌输) the seeds of creativity in his students through arts and crafts.

Umapathy makes beautiful crafts out of biodegradable materials like bamboo, dried leaves, seeds, roots, branches, vegetable waste, and so on. In this way he promotes sustainability in his creations, leaving an everlasting impact on his students.

While growing up, Umapathy was inspired by his father, a teacher and expert weaver (编织者).

“He spent most of his evenings engaging in weaving. I would observe him and eventually developed an interest in design, colour, and the art,” recalls Umapathy.

In 2010, Umapathy joined a high school in Puducherry as their art teacher. It took him some time to excite the interest of the students. He experimented with different arts and crafts using a variety of materials. “One day I suddenly realized that most of the students at my school weren’t able to afford the materials or equipment to create craftwork. So I decided to opt for natural materials, which are as good as non-biodegradable materials and easy to find,” he says.

This move made the students more interested in the craft than before. Under his guidance, the students were convinced that they could make wonders even out of waste materials. Now the school exhibits over 300 pieces of artwork on its walls, all created by the students over the years.

Currently, over 20 students have chosen fine arts for their bachelors and are pursuing a career in it. Muruga, who currently works as a designer, says, “When I expressed my wish to pursue arts after college, Mr. Umapathy guided me. It was his encouragement and guidance that helped me throughout. 【推荐3】The expressive quality of both the forms and gestures in the basically monochromatic composition of Guernica found its way into Picasso’s other work, especially in the intensely coloured versions of Weeping Woman (1937) as well as in related prints and drawings, inportraits of Dora Maar and Nusch Eluard (wife of Picasso’s friend, the French poet Paul Eluard), and in still lifes (Still Life with Red Bull’s Head, 1938). Those works led to the claustrophobic interiors and skull-like drawings (sketchbook number 110, 1940) of the war years, which Picasso spent in France with Maar as well as with Jaime Sabartes, a friend of his student days in Barcelona. Thereafter Sabartés shared Picasso’s life as secretary, biographer, and companion and more often than not as the butt of endless jokes (Portrait of Jaime Sabartes, 1939; Retour de Bruxelles, sketchbook number 137, 1956).

After the liberation of Paris, Picasso resumed exhibiting his work, notably at the Salon d’Automne of 1944 (“Salon de la Libération”), where his canvases of the preceding five years were received as a shock. At the same time, Picasso opened up his studio to both newand old writer and artist friends, including Jean-Paul Sartre, Pierre Reverdy, Eluard, the photographer Brassai, the English artist Roland Penrose, and the American photographer Lee Miller, as well as many American GIs.

Already in 1943 a young painter, Francoise Gilot, had presented herself at the studio, and within months she became Picasso’s mistress. In 1946 Picasso moved to the Mediterranean with Gilot (with whom he was to have two children, Claude in 1947 and Paloma in 1949). First they stayed near Antibes, where Picasso spent four months painting at the Château Grimaldi (Joie de Vivre, 1946). The paintings of that time and the ceramics he decorated at the studio in nearby Vallauris, beginning in 1947, vividly express Picasso’s sense of identification with the classical tradition and with his Mediterranean origins. They also celebrate his new found happiness with Gilot, who in works of that period was often nymph to Picasso’s fauns and centaurs.

C.Skull-like paintings were the features of the works at that time.
D.Sabartes contributed to Picasso’s works at that time in terms of inspiration.
2. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “resume” in Paragraph2?
A.Continue.B.Abandon.C.Restate.D.Reserve.
3. What can be learned about Francoise Gilot?
A.Picasso and Gilot got married in 1946.B.Gilot was as famous as Picasso at that time.
C.Picasso portrayed Gilot in his paintings.D.Picasso and Gilot had three children.
