Parental Instincts

Last year in early summer, I was walking up the hill to my house in suburban Brisbane when I saw two birds, each about 6 centimeters tall, standing in my driveway. They didn’t seem to notice me     1     I was right in front of them and then they immediately scattered into the nearby bushes.

I was quite excited by the idea of two special birds     2    (make) a nest in my front yard, although I didn’t really expect them to as wild birds don’t usually nest so close.

A few weeks later, the birds reappeared. I found them crouching beside a tree off to the side of my driveway. As I approached them, I imagined that they’d run away like they did last time, but instead they     3    (stick) out their heads and made a threatening croaking sound     4     came from deep inside their throats.

I did some research and found that the birds are burhinus grallarius(长尾石鸻). I still didn’t know    5    they were croaking at me until a short time later I made an amazing discovery: they     6    (lay) two eggs which hatched into two small birds racing around now.

As I crept towards the birds, careful not to make any sudden movement, they started their croaking again,     7    (stretch) their necks forwards so they seemed longer and more threatening.

I was watching them in awe when I suddenly tripped and fell to the ground. The birds took this     8     a threat and the father raced towards me, spreading his wings to shield the mother and the chicks while making     9     appear larger.

I was sorry     10    (scare) them and left quickly.

I am amazed by their bold actions. Their parental instincts kicked in and made them so courageous. It is hard not to be awed by nature.

The aim of program is     1    offer) “forest healing”; the firefighters all have certain types of stress disorder. Saneum is one of three official healing forest in South Korea, which offer a range of programs from meditation to woodcraft to camping. Soon there will be 34 more. South Koreans, many of whom suffer from work stress, digital addiction, and intense academic pressures,    2    (welcome) the medicalization of nature with great enthusiasm. In fact, the government is investing a hundred million dollars     3     a healing complex next to Sobaeksan National park.

There is increasing evidence     4     being outside in a pleasant natural environment is good for us. But what is frustrating is that fewer of us actually enjoy nature regularly. According to Lisa Nisbet, a psychology professor at Canada’s Trent University, evidence for the benefits of nature is pouring at a time    5     we are most disconnected from it. The pressures of modern life lead to long hours spent working indoors. Digital addiction and strong academic pressure add to the problem. In America, visits to parks have been declining since the dawn of email, and so    6     visits to the backyard. Research indicates that only about 10 percent of American teens spend time outside every day.

So what are some of the benefits of nature that Nisbet refers to?    7     (surround) by nature has one obvious effect: the more time we spend in nature, the     8     (stressful) we become. This has been shown to lower blood pressure, heart rates, and levels of the stress hormone, as well as reduce feelings of fear or anger. But studies also indicate that spending time in nature can do more than provide an     9     (improve) sense and well-being; it can lower rates of heart disease and diabetes. That is probably     10     we evolved in nature and have been adapted to the natural environment.

The heat wave that broke high temperature records in five European countries a week ago is now over Greenland,     1     (cause) the surface of the islands vast ice sheet to melt at near-record levels and a huge     2     (lose) of ice in the Arctic. On Wednesday alone, more than 10 billion tons of ice was lost to the oceans by surface melt, which is equal     3     about 4,000,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, said Ruth Mottram, a climate scientist with the Danish Meteorological Institute.

Melting     4     (increase) in recent decades because of climate change and has been decreasing accumulation from snow. Previously, during the 1970s and the 1980s, Greenland lost     5     average of 50 billion tons of ice each year. From 2010 to 2018, that figure shot up to 290 billion tons     6     (annual). This summer, the extent of the melt could surpass (超过) the record set in 2012,     7     about 97% of the ice sheets surface began to melt. NASA-JPL Caltech reported at the time.

Greenland, the worlds largest island,     8     (lie) between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans, with 82 per cent of its surface     9     (cover) in ice. A June 2019 study by scientists in the U. S. and Denmark said melting ice in Greenland alone will add between 5 and 33 centimeters to the rising     10     (globe) sea levels by the year 2100. If all the ice in Greenland melted, which would take centuries, the world’s oceans would rise by 7.2 meters.

Wildlife Secrets of Nigeria’s Last Wilderness

Researchers from Chester Zoo, working with the Nigeria National Park Service, surveyed over 1,000 square kilometres of the national park. Known     1     its mountain rainforests and rolling grasslands, it is home to some of West Africa’s most threatened animals.

The cameras     2     (spot) some animals that have never been recorded before in the area and others, like chimps(黑猩猩),     3     are rarely seen. Stuart Nixon, the Africa Field Programme Co-ordinator at Chester Zoo, said confirmation of the locations of chimps was an important discovery. “Gashaka’s been regarded for many years as     4     (have) the biggest population of this Nigeria-Cameroon chimp,” he said. “We consider it the most important population—that’s really     5     we need to count it and see what the status of the chimp is right now—that will eventually affect what we know about this subspecies elsewhere.”

The chimp     6     (endanger) across its range in Cameroon and Nigeria. Its total population is down to fewer than 9,000 individuals, of which about 1,000 are thought     7     (live) within the borders of the national park. “It’s an amazing tool to use these camera traps and to reveal that this park—which is a     8     (forget) wilderness, really, for Nigeria—still has a really important store of important species for Nigeria and Africa in general,” said Stuart Nixon.

Chester Zoo is funding guards for the rangers and providing training in wildlife monitoring and protection. “This work is helping us learn more about the secrets of one of our last wilderness areas and we must continue to work together to ensure     9     survival for future generations,” said Stuart Nixon, “     10     all this beauty were lost, it would be a terrible tragedy for all.”
