Traditionally, China’s astronauts are selected from among fighter plane pilots with enough flying experience, as they can control the machinery and have the training to stay calm in space.

Yet among the three astronaut s aboard Shenzhou XVI, which is taking them to Tiangong, China’s space station, is Gui Haichao, a professor from Beihang University. He is the first civilian that China has sent into space, and will conduct space science experiments, collect and analyze data and maintain the lab devices on the space station.

That’s good news for the nation’s space science, as he will be more professional in carrying out research experiments on the space station.

It is also good news for China’s astronautics sector, as it shows that the nation is confident enough to send persons other than military pilots into space. It means that the level for traveling into space is being lowered, offering hope that one day ordinary people will be able to buy a ticket for a trip into space.

Besides Gui, there is also Zhu Yangzhu, a space flight engineer from China’s astronaut team, who will serve as a profession al rather than a pilot. Zhu’s teaching experience in college, similar to that of Gui, is also evidence of Chinese astronauts’ educational background being raised.

Twenty years after Shenzhou V took China’s first astronaut Yang Liwei out of the Earth’s atmosphere, China already has a full team of astronauts ready to further our understanding of the cosmos(宇宙).

Mission commander Jing Haipeng is on his fourth trip into space, making him the Chinese astronaut with the richest experience in space travel. In the 15 years between his first mission and this one, China has progressed from sending astronauts into space to supporting their stay for half a year on its newly constructed space station.

Common sense suggests that the bigger the animal, the greater number of cells—and therefore the greater chance of developing cancer. However, in the 1970s an Oxford University professor, Richard Peto, found that: the bigger animal, the less cancer.

Scientists call it Peto’s paradox: cancer is caused by gene mutations(突变) that increase in cells over time, yet long-lived animals that have lots of cells, such as elephants and whales, hardly ever get it. Why? For elephants, at least, part of the answer may be the gene commonly known as p53, which also helps humans and many other animals repair DNA damaged during replication(复制). Elephants have an amazing 20 copies of this gene. Those copies, each with two variations called alleles, produce a total of 40 proteins, compared with humans’ and most animals’ single copy producing two proteins.

New research in Molecular Biology and Evolution looks into how elephants’ many copies offer cancer-fighting advantages. The work “opens many new possibilities to study how cells protect themselves from a damaged genome,” says co-author Robin Fåhraeus, a molecular oncologist at France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research. In mammals, p53 plays a significant role in preventing mutated cells from turning into tumors. It works by pausing replication and then either starting repair or causing cells to self-destroy if the damage is huge. Without action from p53, cancer can easily take hold.

The scientists modeled and examined elephants’ 40 p53 proteins finding two ways the gene could help elephants avoid cancer. First, that elephants possess multiple copies lowers the chance of p53 no longer working because of mutations. Additionally, elephants’ p53 copies activate in response to varying molecular triggers(触发器) and so respond to damaged cells differently, which likely gives an edge when detecting and clearing away mutations.

These “remarkable” results imply that elephants have a series of means through which p53 can operate. This points to exciting possibilities for exploring powerful new approaches to cancer protection in humans.

1. What’s the original view on animals’ cancer?
A.P53 makes cells self-destroy.

D.Bigger animals are likely to develop cancer.
2. What can the gene — p53 do during replication?
A.Repair damaged DNA.B.Produce two proteins.
C.Produce 40 proteins totally.D.Prevent the cancer gene.
3. What helps elephants avoid cancer?
A.An active genome.B.P53 proteins.
C.Damaged DNA.D.Mutated cells.
4. What will researchers probably concentrate on in the future?
A.How p53 copies interact with damaged cells.
B.Following up on these results using blood samples.
C.Helping lowering the chance of developing cancer in humans.
D.Comparing their findings with results from studying other animals.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了“cold tongue”这个未解之谜,科学家对其成因的猜测,以及解决该问题对人类的意义。

【推荐2】A narrow region of the eastern Pacific Ocean has been getting colder for the past 30 years, challenging global trends and confusing many scientists. Over at least three decades, the region has cooled by roughly half a degree, which has been causing scientists to wonder how long that will hold.

The unusual phenomenon, known as the “cold tongue” is affecting a vast area of ocean west of South America. Scientists are not entirely certain what is keeping the “cold tongue” cool. Richard Seager, from the Earth Observatory at Columbia University, said one factor appears to be trade winds in the equatorial (赤道) region, which carry warm water away from the surface, stimulating cooler water to rise. “The trade winds blow from east to west across the tropical Pacific Ocean,” Seager said. “As the waters are driven away from the surface, water flows up from below. And since the waters below the surface are cold, this creates the ‘cold tongue’.”

Yet despite the effect of these winds, the “cold tongue” has puzzled scientists, because advanced climate computer models suggest that the waters should have been warming for decades at a faster rate than the rest of the Pacific due to rising greenhouse gas emissions (排放).

Pedro DiNezio of the University of Colorado Boulder, considers “It’s the most important unanswered question in climate science”. Scientists can’t predict when it will end or start warming since the cause is unknown. According to New Scientist, this has huge worldwide implications, including determining California’s permanent drought and Australia’s wildfires. More profoundly still, “it could even alter the extent of climate change globally”, the site said, “by understanding how sensitive Earth’s atmosphere is to rising greenhouse gas production”.

Despite this, the overall ocean temperatures are rising. Solving the puzzle of the “cold tongue” isn’t about proving climate models wrong. Rather, the “cold tongue” is the last big piece of the puzzle. Fit that in and we can build a more accurate picture of how life will change in a warming world-and how best to prepare for that future.

1. What may be the cause of the “cold tongue”?
A.The arrival of ocean currents.
B.Trade winds in the equatorial regions.
C.The change in the direction of water flow.
D.The temperature differences between sea and land.
2. Why are scientists confused about the “cold tongue” phenomenon?
A.It has lasted for many years.B.It forms a minor ocean ecosystem.
C.It contradicts the global warming trend.D.It mirrors increasing carbon emissions.
3. What makes solving the “cold tongue” puzzle important?
A.It can help predict droughts in California.
B.It contributes to adjusting ocean temperatures.
C.It can help improve the accuracy of climate models.
D.It offers insights into dealing with future climate events.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To stress the effect of climate change.
B.To introduce an unusual phenomenon.
C.To explain reasons for strange natural disasters.
D.To appeal to people to pay more attention to the ocean.

【推荐3】Time talks. It speaks more honestly than words. Time communicates in many ways.

Consider the different parts of the day, for example. The time of the day when something is done can give a special meaning to the event. Factory managers in the United States fully realize the highest degree of importance of an announcement made during the middle of the morning or afternoon that takes everyone away from his work.

In the United States, it is not customary to telephone someone very early in the morning or after 11 p.m. The call shows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. Especially a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it is a matter of life or death. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance.

In social life, time plays a very important part. In the United States, guests tend to feel they are not highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only one or two days before the party date. It may be considered foolish to make an appointment too far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a week away tend to be forgotten. Americans look ahead and are concerned with the future. However, the American idea of future is limited and foreseeable.

Being punctual is also valued highly in American life. People who can not keep on time may be regarded as impolite or not fully responsible. A person who is 5 minutes late is expected to make a short apology. If he is less than 5 minutes late, he will say a few words of explanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence. To an American, being half an hour late is the beginning of the “insult period”. No matter what is said in apology, there is little that can remove the damage done by 30-minute wait

Since time has such different meanings in different cultures, communication is sometimes difficult We will understand each other a little better if we can keep this fact in mind.

A.calling to your friend at any time is acceptable.
B.the invitation should be given to an American friend two weeks before the date.
C.American people hope to keep their future under control.

4. The author may agree that________ .
A.People can be late for 5 minutes.
B.Making a short apology is acceptable.
C.Being late will lead to a relationship forever broking up.
