After dinner, Mrs Quimby told the family that Grandma had sent in a lot of pumpkins for jack-o’-lanterns (空心南瓜灯) for the neighborhood children. There was one in the basement waiting to be carved, she added. Hearing that, Eva sprang to her feet and rushed down to bring it up.

“Let’s make it smile like last year,” exclaimed Eva.

“Hmm. Let’s see.” Mr Quimby studied the pumpkin, turning it to find the best side for the face. With a pencil, he drew a nose-shaped nose. Then the mouth turned up on both sides. “Smiling!” Eva clapped her hands.

Mr Quimby nodded with a smile, cut a circle around the top of the pumpkin and lifted it off for a lid. Without being asked, Eva found a big spoon for scooping (用勺挖) out the seeds. Picky-picky, the Quimbys’ old cat, came into the kitchen to see if something had been put in his dish. When he found that there wasn’t any, he smelled the pumpkin and walked out angrily.

Mr Quimby began to whistle as he carved with skill and care, first a mouthful of teeth, each one neat and square, then eyes and eyebrows. He was working on two ears shaped like question marks when Mrs Quimby announced it was bedtime for Eva. Unwillingly, Eva ran, took a shower and quickly returned. Mr Quimby had just carved a few C-shaped hairs around the hole in the top of the pumpkin. He reached inside and dug a candle holder in the bottom.

“There,” he said, putting down his knife. “A work of art.” Mrs Quimby found a short candle, put it in the pumpkin, lit it and set the lid in place. Eva turned off the light. The jack-o’-lantern was smiling and shining softly. “Wow!” Eva threw her arms around her father before going to bed with great satisfaction.

I was ready for bed when the phone rang. This cannot be good. My mind quickly ran through the list of family members that might need my help, but the voice on the other end of the line was only vaguely familiar.

“Lindy, this is Leslie,” she said. “I hope I didn’t catch you sleeping.”

I was a bit confused that she would be calling me at eleven o’clock at night. I didn’t know here very well, and we only occasionally spoke with each other at various community events. I assured her that I was still up and asked what she needed. I was afraid it might be something really terrible to cause her to reach out to someone she barely knew. Instead, she asked me a strange question.

“Do you have room for a turkey in your freezer?” she asked.

We had lots of room in our freezer. In fact, we had too much room. My husband’s business had taken a downturn and we were pretty much at the bottom of our food supply.

“Sure,” I responded, “Did your freezer break down?”

“Not exactly,” Leslie replied, “but if you will give me directions to your house I will explain when I get there.”

This was certainly odd. “Our freezer? Now?” Tom asked. “We hardly know her.” I didn’t have an explanation for him, so I just shrugged my shoulders. We quickly changed back into blue jeans from our nightclothes and scurried to meet her outside so the doorbell would not wake our four children.

Pulling up the driveway was a huge freezer truck. Leslie stepped down from the passenger side and explained that her husband serviced a small grocery store that had just lost its lease. They had to empty all the freezers before midnight and it was a shame to just throw away all this good food so she began to go through her list of contacts. Ours was the last place they planned to stop and anything left would have to be discarded.

A Regret

As I sat on the couch, my heart was filled with guilt. I recalled how terrible my mistake was, regretting my every move.

It was finally the start of the school holidays. As soon as I reached home, I jumped into my bed. “Freedom!” I shouted with joy.

“Tim, stop relaxing. Didn’t you say that you wanted to learn how to skate? Your father bought you a new skateboard. He will start teaching you tomorrow!” my mother said with delight. Immediately, I jumped out of my bed and sped downstairs. Lying on the dining table was a wonderful skateboard with my name carved on it. The colours, shape and size of each pattern were incredible.

“Can I start now?” I questioned impatiently. My mum shook her head and firmly said that it was too dangerous. A frown (皱眉) filled my face. Disappointed, I took my new skateboard up to my room.

As I stared at the window, I realized how perfect the weather was. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. There were not many people as well. “No one will know that I stole out secretly and it will not be dangerous. There aren’t many people anyway!” Without hesitation, I tiptoed out of the house. “I can’t wait any longer! I can’t wait!” I spoke to myself in a whisper.

At a nearby park, I placed the skateboard on the ground. Despite being clueless on how to skate, I found a creative way to do so. One of my favourite moves was sitting on the skateboard, with two hands on it, using my legs to move forward.

Not long after, I crowned myself “Master of Skating”. I finally got the hang of it and was skating all around. “My method is amazing!” I announced. At that moment, I saw a long and steep slope (陡坡). My face lit up and I quickly headed towards it. I was filled with confidence to the edge. I flew down the slope with excitement and joy.

Scanning the court, Luis pretended to pass the ball to another teammate but finally gave it to Nicholas. As Luis expected, Nicholas kicked hard and… GOAL! Just then, Devon walked up angrily. “What were you DOING there, Luis?!” he yelled. Luis rolled his eyes.

Devon started playing soccer with them weeks ago. He was nice when he felt like things in the game had gone his way. Otherwise, he would lose temper.

“Playing soccer.” Luis shrugged. “Why didn’t you pass to me? I was closer to the goal than Nicholas.” Devon yelled again.

As the group walked in, Devon continued. Luis ignored him to avoid arguing. Nicholas approached and began complaining about Devon’s yelling and disrespect. “What can you do about that?” Luis asked. Nicolas said he wanted to organize a new team without Devon. Luis was upset to hear that. Nicholas said, “It’s more fun before he started playing with us. I’ve told the other teammates. They agreed.”

Reaching home, Luis dragged his feet into his bedroom, which confused his mom. “What’s wrong?” She asked. Then, Luis told what happened to her. “Have any of you tried talking to Devon about this?” She asked. “I don’t know.” Luis scratched his head.

“Maybe a boundary could help. When playing soccer, how do you know whether someone is at the right position on the court? What’s that line called?” Mom reminded. “A boundary.” Luis murmured.

“Tell Devon whether he’s crossing a line with how he talks.” She suggested. Luis took the advice and decided to have a try.

The next day at school, Luis found Devon and told him all the teammates liked playing soccer with him but they didn’t like being yelled at by him.

“I don’t yell at people.” Devon immediately interrupted.

“You yelled at me the other day because I didn’t pass to you,” Luis reminded calmly. “And you are yelling now. If you keep yelling at your teammate, we won’t play with you anymore.”

Devon was too embarrassed to speak. “Being yelled at isn’t fun but playing soccer is supposed to be fun.” Luis said, patting Devon’s shoulder gently.

Later, during the training, Luis met Nicholas and told him what he’d told Devon.
