Yesterday, when I arranged my old things, I found a friendship bracelet with several names on it. Looking at it, all those old memories came flooding back to me.
It was when I was a freshman in high school. My only close friend was Sabella, who I had known since kindergarten. Bella is and always will be one of my best friends. But she had other close friends too. However, I didn’t. I was on the volleyball team, and on the court I knew exactly who I was and where I was supposed to be. I loved all of my teammates, but when we were sitting together before and after games I would just sit there quietly, totally unsure of myself. So I felt never really fit in.
At school, it seemed like the only time anyone talked to me was just to jokingly say, “You are so quiet...Do you ever talk?” I wanted to talk; I just couldn’t find the words. I never felt like I knew what to say in a big group of people.
One Saturday after our game, Bella was supposed to come over and spend the night at my house. We always had a lot of fun together. I wished that I could talk to the other girls in the way I talked to her. But before we left the gym that day, some of the other volleyball girls invited her to go to the movies with them. Since Bella had already made plans with me, they asked if I would like to go to the movies with them too.
One of the moms drove us, and we all piled into the back seat of her Suburban—Rhiannon, Destinee, Christine, Sabella and me. I was kind of nervous at first, but once it was just us five, I came out of my shell. For the first time in my life, I really felt like I was a part of the conversation, instead of just sitting there listening. It turned out that I had a lot to say, which even surprised me. All the way there, and all the way back, we talked and laughed.

It was a cold winter night in New York. I was a little scared because I had just moved into a new house; I had seen a mouse. I’m scared of mice. However, the really bad thing about shifting was that I didn’t have even one friend. There was something good, though. In the former house, I had to share a bathroom with other people, which I didn’t like. In this house, I have my own bathroom.
Today was my first day of school, and the streets to school were very nice; they were like ice rinks(溜冰场)covered with snow. When I reached school, I felt nervous as I was entering middle school without a friend. At first there was a history class in which I knew a girl named Alice. Alice had yellow hair, skin which was as white as milk, and eyes as blue as the sky. She looked at me and asked me if I would like to be her friend. She looked sweet and friendly, so I said “yes”. I was enthusiastic, but when we left for break, I saw something that I did not like—some guys were threatening and bullying(欺负)Alice.
On seeing this, I told the guys, “Don’t say that to her. ”
“Who are you to tell me what to say? ” one of the guys said.
Alice felt extremely bad and went running and crying. When she ran away, I tried to follow her, but I could not catch up and lost her. She disappeared into one of the many rooms. After a while of searching, I thought to look in the cafeteria and saw her sitting and crying. Just when I was going to try to calm her, the bell rang, and she hurried away.

I saw children playing in the playground happily, but I was never allowed there. It wasn’t just me, but all my other friends. When I was little, I didn’t care about it much, but when I grew up things seemed to change. Me, my family, and friends were all Africans and mainly we all had dark skin, which was the reason for all this.
My mama would always say, “Things will change, Berhane, you will one day see the world.” What she said turned out to be right years later. But at that time, I doubted about her words because of the rules of my school without knowing I would make friends with a white girl.
The school I studied had two parts which were separated by a wall. I never knew what was like on the other side of the school and neither did my friends. But there was one thing that we know for sure, if you try to find out what was going on the other side, you will be punished.
One day I was playing with a ball during break with Walter and Grady. I kicked the ball so hard that it went to the other side. We decided to bring the ball back because we had no money to buy another.
Making sure that everything was okay, we went to the other side. We walked along the wall. By the time we got close to the ball, we were all dirty and hurt. But all our efforts were a waste because a group of white children already got the ball.
They were wondering where it had come from. We were pushing and fighting each other, saying, “You get the ball!” “No, you get it!” I was told to get the ball because I was the one who had kicked the ball to the other side. I stood there quietly watching the kids. There was a girl and two boys, their backs toward us. Their hairs were all combed and mine were all curled up. I was a girl with dark skin, while they had light skin. We were completely different.

My family moved from Taiwan to a smalltown in central Georgia, where my dad got a visa for his family and a job. I had just learned English, and from what little I could gather from my friends. Santa Claus would come down one’s chimney and put toys in one’s stocking on Christmas Eve! What a great country, I thought. After I looked up “stocking” in my Chinese-English dictionary, I knew what I had to do and always expected that day.
Finally, the big day came. On that wonderful night, after everyone went to bed, I sneaked out of bed, took my longest, cleanest knee sock and attached it to a nail already on the mantel (壁炉). Obviously, the previous owners of this house were no strangers to this Santa character. Gazing at the sock and imagining the delicately-packed gift in it, I couldn’t help giggling (咯咯笑). For the first time, I found it hard to fall asleep.
And for the first time, I woke up before everyone else in the early morning. Then I headed straight to the fireplace and was even ready for what to say after seeing the gift. However, what happened next was the least thing I wanted to mention. On the nail was the empty and lonely sock. I was hit with the reality of the empty sock and the biggest lie ever told. I tried my best to holdback my tears but failed. Bursting into tears, I quickly took down the sock and stuffed it in the back of a drawer.
Every December since then, the topic of Christmas memories would unavoidably come up, and I would amuse my friends with my poor-little-me story. I had to make it as funny as possible, or else I would cry once again. I didn’t know whether any of my audience ever noticed the sparkling tears hidden in my eyes.
How could I know that Santa was just late? Nine years ago, on Christmas Eve, I heard a knock on the door when I was watching TV. Unwillingly, I dragged my feet and opened the door.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________It was May 2018, and my partner, Gabe Rosescu, and I were taking a road trip in his little car from my home in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, to visit friends in Nelson, British Columbia. It was our first trip together after six months of dating, meaning it would be an adventure on so many levels.
At around 5: 30 p. m., we were driving along the Crowsnest Highway, a steep winding road that splits through the southern Canadian Rockies. I was texting my mother when I happened to look up in time to see an enormous tree in front of us on the highway —standing straight up!It was being pushed along by mud that was swallowing everything in its path.
Within seconds, our car was rolling 900 feet down the cliffside.
I don’t know how long we were unconscious, but I woke up to the sound of Gab e moaning. He was slumped over the steering wheel and his blood was everywhere.
The car had landed on a small rock amid trees that had come down with the slide. On one side of us was the mountain. On the other, a steep drop of about 3,000 feet into a river.
I tried opening my door and was overcome by sharp chest pain. I’d later learn that I’d suffered a broken breastbone. In addition, my left ankle had been crushed and my foot was practically turned sideways. Gab e had broken his cheek bones, as well as his orbital (眼眶) bones, leaving him blind in his left eye.
With the passenger and driver’s side doors crushed shut, and my window impassable, the only way out was through the driver’s side window. Neither of us remember doing it, but somehow we both managed to crawl out of that wreckage. We sat on a log and considered our options.

My family immigrated to Canada when I was about one year old. In those early years, we did not have much money. Our home was a simple rented apartment, which was rather poorly furnished. There certainly was not enough money for expensive outings. As a result, our weekends were filled with simple pleasures that we could do for free, like picnics, bike rides, and my favorite—trips to the library.
Thanks to the library’s children’s section, I fell in love with stories—silly ones, moving ones, and even educational ones. I would have my parents read the books that we borrowed over and over again until we needed to return them, or I would page through them myself, imagining the stories in my head, even though I was too young to read the words.
When I was about five years old and finally started to read on my own, I had a curious thought: I knew we could get books from the library or buy them in store s if we had the money, but where did books come from?
I asked my mother this question, to which she replied that the stories I loved were created in the imaginations of people called “writers” These people then wrote them down so they could be s hared with others.
Four decades later, I still remember that moment. It was as though I had been struck by lightning. Then and there, I knew my purpose in this world. I would be one of those writers. I would create stories and share them with the world.
