Tiger research: Indonesia While sustainable tourism helps protect many of the Indonesia’s wildlife, one of its rarest species, the Sumatran tiger, suffers as the island’s cities expand into its forest habitat. Fortunately Biosphere Expeditions have created a trip that not only benefits the seriously endangered animal, but helps protect it too. Based in a remote camp in the heart of the rainforest, volunteers will be needed to tour the landscape, documenting tracks, kills and scats (粪便) to aid important research into the lives of these big cats. Cycling tour: Cambodia With an ancient world of temples and jungles, Cambodia is the kind of country that needs to be explored slowly. PEPY Tours offers 621 miles of green fields, dusty orange tracks and winding rivers on its 15-day cycling expeditions. Money goes directly to local people through homestays and lunches, while tours allow visitors to learn Khmer customs and contribute to ongoing community development projects. Teaching: Morocco It’s the breathtaking beauty that draws tourists to Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains, but while the remoteness of the setting may aid its charm it also causes problems. Few inhabitants of the region’s rural villages, especially females, continue their education past primary school. Education For All (EFA) is a Moroccan NGO that builds and runs girls’ boarding houses near secondary schools in the High Atlas, making further education theoretically possible. Based in the beautiful town of Asni, the programme is looking for female volunteers with teaching experience. Chicago is a great city for eating, and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night, we tried one of the city’s most famous foods: deep-dish pizza. Chicago claims credit for the rich and cheesy thick-crust pizza, covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers.
We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today, we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch: Pierogis, an Eastern European dumpling-like dish, filled with foods like potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the U.S.
We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you! Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for an on-the -road version of TALK2US. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, and a graduate student in India.
Meanwhile, Adam searched for some locations around the city to shoot some video. He chose a spectacular spot: Navy Pier, Chicago’s most-visited attraction. The winds from Lake Michigan keep visitors cool, and the view of the Chicago skyline never fails to impress. In fact, the view made all of us head over heels!
Our time in Chicago has come to an end. Tomorrow, the true journey begins, as we pass through Illinois and into Missouri via Route 66. Springfield, the home of Abe Lincoln, and St. Louis, the “gateway to the West,” wait for us.

And how great must it have been to listen to Zhang Qian when he returned to China from his journey through Central Asia and West Asia? His brain must have been packed with everything he’d seen and heard, leading to the founding of the Silk Road.
Some people have traveled all over the world, and travel is a way of life to them. They perhaps know what to expect before they travel. That’s why the best travel is when it’s for the first time. Imagine a person who has always wanted to travel to the United States. Of course, they’ve probably seen the Statue of Liberty a thousand times on TV, and the White House, and all the other famous sights. But none of that would compare to the thrill of looking out of the cabin window as the plane lands, watching the cities and streets of the real America come into view.
Although travel is often just for recreation, it’s also educational. We may not know that we are getting an education, but we still are.
We’re learning every day: new words in a new language, new people, and new ways of life. But this learning takes place in the school of the world, not the classroom. One of the lessons we learn is undoubtedly a moral one. As we get to know foreign places, we come to understand that there are many different ways to live, and that the way we live isn’t necessarily the best way. The British politician Benjamin Disraeli summed this up well when he said, “Travel teaches toleration.”

Heathrow Express passengers travelling on October 13 were treated to sessions with yoga influencer Celest Pereira, who has developed a 12-minute seat-yoga and meditation(冥想) sessions to help travelers relax. Travelers of all ages and abilities can perform the exercises safely from their seats-and it’s believed to be the first time a yoga class has taken place on a moving train.
To get passengers in the right frame of mind, the “Tranquil Train” carriage hosting the sessions was decorated with fresh eucalyptus(桉树). “This was a real pick me up, especially after a long overnight flight. The smell is so wonderful,” said Elizabeth, from Washington DC. The initiative was tested after a study also conducted by Heathrow Express, which identified the most worrying aspects of travel during the epidemic- including delayed departures (52%) and crowds (48%). Missing flights, trains, or buses (47%) also leads to anxiety and worrying you’ve forgotten something like your passport or the tickets (40%). Other worries include getting lost (38%), being separated from your luggage (33%), and missing travel announcements (29%).
Celest Pereira said: “Travelling can be a very intense experience-there’s lots going on, lots of things to think about, and it’s very deadline driven. By hosting these classes we are hoping to ease those pressures and help passengers be in the present moment.” Commenting on his experience, Joe Bence, a 26-year-old from London who was among those who boarded the Heathrow Express “Tranquil Train”, said: “I have such a busy life and usually look at my phone on the train-but today I completely switched off. The class was a nice distraction from life, it made my day.”
