When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn’t a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes. He listened to me quietly, then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn’t you ever wonder what you’re really like ? Well, you now have that girl’s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn’t change (like being very thin), but a good number I could — and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. “That’s just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you’ll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don’t shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”
Daddy’s advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I’ve never had a better piece of advice.

After a crazy few years of working my way through college and then the pandemic(大流行病), I felt I had this disconnection with my mom and her gardening. As a kid, I spent a lot of time with her in her garden. And those were some of the happiest moments of our lives. For Mother’s Day this year, I decided to get back in the garden to spend some quality time with her. Though we weren’t able to plant everything we wanted to, due to the weather, we had a good time.
My mom always makes sure to fertilize(施肥于) her garden with natural fertilizers. She doesn’t like using chemicals. It’s not good for pollinators(传粉者) and the chemicals can run off into the nearby river. Each year she designs her garden differently so that each section of the garden can have a variety of vegetables and later on, nutrients are added to the soil. “Where did you learn all of this?” I asked her. Growing up I was always under the impression that my mom just knew everything. It was not a wrong assumption, but I was curious. “Wisconsin Public Radio!” she said. “Each Friday it has Garden Talk where Larry Meiller interview s gardening experts about planting in Wisconsin.”
Besides a garden, my mom also grew a prairie, filled with tons of native Wisconsin flowers. A pollinator paradise (乐园). This year, she planted sunflowers, purple coneflowers, and a variety of other wildflowers to help out the pollinators in the yard and give her garden the best chance to thrive(繁荣). At the end of the day, I was glad to have gotten my hands dirty with my mom, I learned a lot, and I felt that I had gotten closer to her.

But often it’s like each teacher acts as if his is the only subject we have. They think nothing of piling on our homework or giving surprise quizzes. Sometimes we have to take two or three tests in different subjects on the same day. I’d like to see a lot of adults I know preparing for that.
When the pressure becomes too high, some kids may resort to (诉诸于) cheating. If you have three or four subjects to study for, you’re not going to be able to devote enough time to each subject in order to be well prepared for each class. Besides, it may be the only way left to live up to your parents’ expectations and compete with the top students in the class.
Everybody knows that if you cheat, it’s important not to get caught. Few things can cause more of chaos. Once, my elder brother got caught cheating on a math final. My parents acted as though he’d committed a federal crime. The assistant principal called them to school, but although the incident caused several conferences, I don’t think that anybody ever really understood what my brother was going through. We’re just supposed to perform outstandingly as well as always act honestly, but how many adults can actually live up to the standards they set for us?
My father has gotten countless traffic tickets for parking in no parking zones or for not coming to a full stop at stop signs. And you’ve always hearing about people who don’t file their incomes tax honestly. How about all the corruption in government? Successful adults often accept dishonesty in order to achieve their business goals. Are kids the only ones who are supposed to be perfect?
Most of my friends have cheated on tests in school at one time or another. The kids who never cheated are usually either afraid of getting caught or just don’t know how to do it safely. Nobody wants to cheat. But if it’s a choice of being honest or of getting a better grade, most kids will try for the latter. That may sound wrong, but we didn’t make the rules, we’re just trying to get by.

Named the "Father of Traffic Safety," 'Eno developed the first traffic plans for major cities including New York, London, and Paris, and is credited with helping to invent and popularize stop signs, taxi stands, pedestrian safety islands, and other traffic features commonly used throughout the world.
Eno started out in his family's real estate business, but his interest in transportation led him to concentrate his spare time on traffic reform. In 1899, at the age of 40, he left real estate behind and devoted the rest of his life to put his concepts for orderly transportation into practice. His "Rules of the Road," adopted by New York City in 1909, became the world's first city traffic plan. He also wrote the first-ever manual of police traffic regulations.
Eno gradually embraced multimodal transportation interests. He developed a plan for subways in New York City long before anyone else seriously considered the concept. He also became interested in maritime activities, supported railroad development, and started research in the 1920s on the future impact of avidtion(航空).
Eno died in 1945 at the age of 86. Ironically, he never drove a car during his lifetime. The Father of Traffic Safety,an enthusiastic horseback rider, distrusted automobiles.
In 1921, William P. Eno created a corporation whose purpose was to continue his lifetime's work—the promotion of safety on roads and highways. He sponsored the Foundation and began the work of attracting other transportation experts and specialists in order to provide a forum for unbiased discussions that would lead to improvements in the movement of people and goods.
Since 1921, the Foundation has undergone many changes. But sometimes bystanders’ understanding, and sometimes their words or actions can make a positive difference. One mom experienced this first-hand.
This mom was obviously pregnant and traveling alone with her young son at the Los Angeles International Airport. Then things took a turn for the worse.
The boy, about 18 months old, according to Beth, a Facebook user, was running all over the place, kicking, screaming, and lying on the floor, unwilling to get aboard the plane. His mom did her best to calm him down, but Beth said, “She couldn’t pick him up because he was so upset. He kept running away from her, then lying down on the ground, kicking and screaming again.” Finally, the mom was at her wits’ end. She sat down on the floor next to her son, buried her face in her hands, and began to cry.
Then the most amazing thing happened.
A group of six or seven women, Beth included, circled around the mother and son and did something to help. Beth sang him the “Itsy Bitsy Spider”. Another offered an orange. Another gave him a toy she had on hand. Another helped get his cup out of Mom’s bag. Yet another tended to Mom by offering her a water bottle. With the help of these women, the kid and his mother calmed down and were able to board the plane.
And then life moved on. All of the strangers went their separate ways without speaking of what had happened. But Beth said it was something she’d never forget. “We were strangers, gathering to solve something,” she wrote. “It occurred to me that a circle of passers-by, with a mission, can save the world.”

On February 22, 2021, the Memphis, Tennessee, native was selected to be one of four crew members of the Space X Inspiration—the world’s first civilian astronaut mission. The 29-year-old will make further history as the youngest American—and the first with a prosthetic limb(假肢)—to travel to space.
“Until this mission, I could have never been an astronaut,” Hayley said. “This mission is opening space travel to people who are not physically perfect.”
Hayley’s space dream began two decades ago, following a visit to the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, during a family vacation. “I got to see where the astronauts trained and of course wanted to be an astronaut after that—who doesn’t?” She recalls. However, the young girl’s dream was destroyed a year later when she was diagnosed with bone cancer—in her femur(股骨).
Fortunately, the often fatal disease had been caught early and the experts were able to limit its spread through chemotherapy(化疗) and by replacing the diseased bones with metal rods in her left leg. Given NASA’s strict medical requirements, Hayley knew that her dream of becoming an astronaut would probably never be realized. However, the young girl had already set her mind on a different, and equally challenging mission—working with young cancer patients at the hospital where she had been cured.
As it turned out, Hayley’s dream of going to space was far from over. On January 5th, 2021, she got a very surprise call from Jared Isaacman, CEO, asking her if she would like to go to space. “Immediately I said, ‘Yes, yes, absolutely!’” Arceneaux told AFP.

Former President Jimmy Carter is almost as wellknown for his volunteer work with Habitat for Humanity as he was for being the 39th president of the United States (1977-1981).His relationship with Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit housing organization devoted to providing comfortable and affordable homes for families, started in 1984.
Jonathan Reckford is Habitat for Humanity’s chief officer. He said, “The group was started by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976. The Fullers asked Jimmy Carter to help with one of Habitat’s building projects in 1984. Jimmy Carter agreed. Since that time, the former president’s beloved wife Rosalynn has worked by his side. They now continue to lend their names and muscle to this international aid group. They have worked on thousands of homes across many countries.”
Not surprisingly, volunteering is in Carter’s DNA. Jimmy Carter said, “My mother served as a doctor for many poor African American patients. She refused to acknowledge most racial distinctions.” In 1966, at the age of 68, Miss Lillian became a Peace Corps volunteer. She stayed in India for 20 months, where she taught women about birth control and treated people with disease.
Through the years, to help the unfortunate families, Jimmy Carter has worked alongside thousands of everyday volunteers. When we say work, we mean those related to getting his hands dirty, wearing jeans, and picking up tools. He slept in all manner of accommodations, and dealt with all types of weather around the world. And Carter hasn’t let his worsening health hold him back either.
