Sam was from a poor family. After graduating from university, he managed to find a highly-paid job working in a reputable company. As his salary was very important for him to support his family, he worked very hard, devoting himself to his tasks and always ready to assist others. Nevertheless, he had a shortcoming — he was often late for work, which had caused some minor losses for the company on previous occasions, although the damages were relatively insignificant. However, this time, the consequences were about to become more severe.

It was a busy morning, and Sam had overslept, leading to yet another delayed start to his day. He hurriedly dressed and dashed out of the door, hoping to make up for lost time while driving. As he drove along the familiar route to work, a sense of unease settled in his mind. He couldn’t shake off the feeling that something important was about to unfold.

Then, in the distance, he noticed something unusual on the side of the road. Curiosity inspired, Sam slowed down and eventually came to a stop. A group of concerned individuals had gathered around a fallen child. The little one, who was on his way to the nearby kindergarten, had suffered a serious injury from the fall. The child’s mother stood beside him, weeping in deep sorrow. Sam parked his car on the roadside, ensuring it was safely out of the way of traffic. He took a closer look at the child, whose face seemed somewhat familiar. Compassion (同情) rose in his heart as he witnessed the anxiety of the mother and the pain across the child’s face.

“Is everything alright? Can I help in any way?” he asked, trying to comfort the mother, who, with her eyes red and filled with tears, explained how serious the situation was. The nearest hospital was a considerable distance away, and she was unable to transport her injured child alone.

Sam decided to drive them to the hospital, even though it meant being late for work.

Jose was a devoted teacher for a local high school in California. Unfortunately, with the money he earned, he couldn’t support his family and extended family in Mexico and rent an apartment in California at the same time. Therefore, having failed to afford the rental of even a shoebox apartment, he had no choice but to live in his old car occasionally to make ends meet until he could find another place to live.

To make matters worse, he found himself living this unfortunate lifestyle after Covid-19 swept the world when California schools closed their doors following the outbreak. This left Jose with little means for making money. So at age 77, Jose ended up living inside of his car. For about two years he was homeless. Home was his car, and his car sat in a grocery store parking lot. During daytime he drove to different locations, looking for job opportunities while he spent most of his nights at the same parking lot, which gave him a sense of belonging.

At day time, he would lean his seat all the way back, so no one would see him because he knew he wasn’t supposed to be there and worried the manager of the grocery store would drive him away. He was a man of self-respect and didn’t want to turn to charity.

When Maggie, the manager of the grocery store did see Jose, she felt he looked familiar because she used to be in his class many years ago. She could still remember how Jose encouraged her to finish her education when she was struggling with her learning. She noticed Jose spent a considerable amount of time in his car, she suspected her teacher had fallen on hard times. She became determined to help her former teacher in his time of need. So, the former student decided to repay the favor and help her homeless teacher.

Lucy Marlow had everything an eleven-year-old girl could possibly want except one thing:a pair of pink leather roller skates(旱冰鞋). Unfortunately, the skates cost over $1,700. Even though Lucy’s parents were very indulgent(纵容的), they thought it was too much for a toy. “It’s not a toy!” Lucy cried. “It’s transportation!” Lucy’s parents gave in and promised that she could have them only if she had straight A on her report card.

Soon at the end of the term, Lucy proudly presented her parents with the straight—A report card they’d demanded, and the next weekend, Lucy was whizzing(飞速行驶)around the neighborhood faster than anyone else with her new skates.

Then one day when Lucy went to school, she was surprised to discover there was a new girl in her class. She was sitting at the desk next to Lucy in geography and she looked very friendly.

“Hi! I’m Lucy!” Lucy whispered, “Want to go roller skating after school?”

“Hi! Mi name is Heather. But I’m afraid I can’t!” Heather said.

”Listen, if you don’t have skates, you can use my old ones, “Lucy said.” I have a brand new pair...”

The bell rang, Heather reached to pick up a pair of crutches(拐杖)under the desk and got up. Lucy was shocked to find one of her legs was missing above the knee. She gasped, “Oh, I’m so sorry! What happened?” Heather shrugged, “It was a car accident.”

That night, Lucy couldn’t sleep. She got up and turned on her laptop. There were all kinds of prosthetic limbs(假肢)for kids. Lucy wondered why Heather didn’t have one.

The next day, over lunch, Lucy asked Heather, “So, how come you don’t have a prosthetic limb?” Heather blushed. “I had one three years ago, after the accident,” she explained, “But I outgrew it. My dad lost his job so we don’t have insurance anymore. We’ve contacted a non-profit that helps kids like me, but I’m on a waiting list...” Hearing her words, Lucy fell into a short silence, remembering how she pressured her parents into buying her the pink skates.
