Thursday was the day of the class spelling bee (拼字比赛), and Maria had studied all week long to make sure she was ready for it. Maria was a very good speller. She wanted to win the spelling bee so she could represent her class in the school-wide spelling bee at the end of the month.

When Maria woke up, she felt very cold. She sneezed six times when she got dressed. At breakfast, she didn’t feel like eating her toast.

“What’s wrong?” asked her father. “Are you nervous about the spelling bee?”

“I don’t feel good,” answered Maria.

Her father put his hand on Maria’s forehead.”You have a fever,“he said.”I’m sorry, but you must stay home from school today.“

Maria was very sad. Now all her hard work would be wasted, and she would not get to win the spelling contest. She wouldn’t even get to try! Disappointed and tired, Maria went back to bed and closed her eyes.

When she opened them again, her room was much brighter. She must have fallen asleep. Maria went to the living room and saw her grandmother Abuelita walked into the room.

“Grandma! What are you doing here?”

Maria’s grandmother gave her a hug. “I came over to make you feel better since you couldn’t go to school today. Are you hungry? It’s already lunch time.”

Abuelita didn’t wait for Maria to answer. She went over to the stove in the kitchen and stirred a big pot.

Maria sat down at the kitchen table, and Abuelita brought her a bowl of soup. “This is a special soup, just for you,” she said.

Maria looked into the bowl.It was full of steaming meat and chicken. “Where are the noodles?” she asked.

“Look harder,” Abuelita said.

Maria used her spoon to scoop up a small bit of the delicious-smelling soup. On her spoon she saw the letters A, R. S and T.

“Please, mother, do sit down and let me try my hand,” said Fred Liscom, a bright, active boy seventeen years old. Mrs. Liscom, looking pale and worn, smiled and said, “You, Fred, you wash dishes?” “Yes, indeed, mother,” replied Fred, “I should be a poor scholar if I couldn’t, when I’ve seen you do it so many times. Just try me.”

A look of relief came over his mother’s face as she seated herself in her low rocking chair. Fred washed the dishes, and put them in the closet. He then swept the kitchen, brought up the potatoes from the cellar (地下室) for the dinner and washed them, and then set out for school.

Fred did so because the doctor said one day, “Well, madam, it’s my opinion that you would have been very sick if you had kept busy.” Fred had given up a great deal of what boys like, for the purpose of helping his mother.

The school boys’ curiosity was excited when he would give no other reason for not coming to school earlier, or staying after school. “I’ll tell you,” said Tom Barton, “I’ll find him out and boys see if I don’t!”

So he called for Fred to go to school, and when he looked into the kitchen window, he saw Fred standing at the table with a dishcloth in his hand.

Of course he reported this at school, and various were the greetings poor Fred received. “Well, you’re a brave one to stay at home washing dishes.” After school, Fred was crying secretly at night after her mother fell asleep when someone shouted “Fire! fire!” It was Mr. Barton’s house. Mr. and Mrs. Barton were not at home, leaving Tom Barton and his sister Katy alone. Without the slightest hesitation, Fred rushed out towards Tom’s house.

83-year-old Agatha Stones was a woman who had given birth to four kids. When these kids grew up, they all moved away from home to start their own lives.

All of Agatha’s kids had become mostly interested in material things but ignored the importance of family. “Business has been a lot, mom,” the eldest, Brian, would say. Sally, John and Mary were in their late 30s and had yet to settle down. It hurt Agatha that none of her four kids remembered to visit her or even call her.

One day, she was complaining about it to her friend Sharon. “I just don’t understand why these kids don’t want to return home to spend time with me,” she said.

“Is that what is eating you?” her friend asked.

“Yes, it is,” Agatha said. “My lawyer has asked me to write my will (遗嘱). I have no idea how I’ll share the little I have among all four of my kids.”

“I know what you can do to determine that,” Sharon proudly said. And then, she offered Agatha a shocking plan.

A couple of days later, a piece of news came: Agatha suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized. Despite that, none of her four kids visited her. A few more days later, all four children received a message stating that their mom had passed away. Within hours, they all arrived home to discuss how they would share the inheritance (遗产).

Suddenly, a voice cut through the discussion. “Will you guys give all that a rest and focus on what has brought us all together? The death of our mother!” the youngest daughter, Mary, shouted. There was a brief pause at her outburst, but as soon as the silence was broken by a phone buzzing, they went on.

Unknown to them, Sharon was listening in on their conversation and, after a few minutes, she walked into the room, and told them to enter another room to say their final goodbyes to their mother.

Kelsey was grateful for everything her mother had done for her. In spite of being raised by her mother alone, Kelsey received a good education, and now held a leading position in a large company.

Recently the company was making corporate brochures (企业手册) in which achievers would share their success and thank their parents as well. For this, the achievers would have to take photos of themselves with their parents.

Kelsey didn’t really want that because her mother had put on a lot of weight due to a sedentary (久坐的) lifestyle. Kelsey managed to contact one of the best photographers and made a reservation in advance. When she and her mother came to the photographer’s studio, Kelsey took the man aside and said, “Please make sure my mom looks thinner in the photo.” But the photographer said what her mother really needed was a diet or exercise, not a photographer.

Kelsey insisted that he shouldn’t make her mother look like a slim dancer. She just expected him to do his best to make her mother look a bit thinner. The photographer finally agreed and took measures to hide some details, setting the right light and choosing better angles for shots. But it was not easy to fool the camera.

Kelsey’s mother noticed how the photographer was having a hard time and how her daughter was shaking her head. She smiled and said that she just wanted photos with Kelsey no matter whether she looked heavy or not.

The next day, Kelsey came to pick up the photos with her mother. The photographer printed out several photos, copied the rest on a flash drive and handed them to Kelsey. Kelsey was disappointed and complained. How she wished her mother could look much thinner! The photographer shrugged helplessly and said nothing. Kelsey’s mother, however, said that the photographer did a good job and she was who she was. Then she told Kelsey to accept the fact that her mother was not “the tiny girl Thumbelina (拇指姑娘) in the fairy tale.”
