Since my son went to college in Chicago, I made quarterly trips there for the next three years. My friend George was a cook there and he knew many outstanding restaurants. One of them was a Chinese restaurant called The Bird. It was owned and operated by Chef Benny Moy who happened to be an old friend of George’s.
The dishes Benny prepared were unique, and everything was in his mind when he was cooking. Just by changing, adding or removing an ingredient or two, he could come up with an entirely new dish.
As a fan of Chinese food, I was always attracted by its recipes. After a year went by, I Road in finally gathered the courage to ask Benny if I could spend a week learning cooking in his restaurant kitchen. To my joy, he agreed readily.
I was very nervous the first day I showed up. But I didn’t have to wait long to find out how I would start. “Put on this jacket, go over to the stove and clean the two woks (锅) there,” he said. I was excited. What a beginning! I was allowed to clean the master’s woks.
Then things just seemed to fall into place. Benny was very concentrated when he was doing preparing work or cooking. I would just follow him around, trying very hard not to get in his way. Besides, I would talk into my hand-held recorder to document everything he did; in effect, I had all his recipes. He had a teaching style that was all his own. And I just watched and learned everything he did by heart
At the end of the week, when my time in the kitchen was over, I came away feeling that I have had the most exciting, unusual, and unique cooking experiences. Plus, now I know how to cook Benny’s most-known dish: Moo shu pork.

Olga was born in 1962 in Sulechow, Poland today lives in Wroclaw. Her parents were teachers and her father also worked as the librarian. In the library she read almost everything she could get hold of and it was there that she developed her literary interest. The novel is an excellent example of the new Polish literature after 1989. It shows a great talent of imagination with a high degree of artistic standards.
Her 900-page The Books of Jacob, which the Swedish Academy thought of as her greatest work, covers seven countries, three religions and five languages, tracking the little-known history of Frankism, a Jewish sect (教派) that developed quickly in the 18th century. The work is considered a reflection of European culture.

When Ballard wasn't at the ocean, he loved reading about it. At age 10, he read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a book which describes the undersea adventures of Captain Nemo. Ballard decided he wanted to be like Captain Nemo when he grew up. His parents helped him follow his dream.
Ballard was a hardworking student. He spent many years learning all he could about the ocean. By the age of 28, he was an expert. In 1970, he took a job as a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. There he studied underwater mountains of the Atlantic Ocean. He came up with ways to predict volcanoes under the oceans. Working with other scientists, Ballard also found previously unknown sea animals. These animals lived far below the ocean's surface, where scientists had believed no animals could live.
By the 1980s, Ballard's interests changed. He developed unmanned vehicles to explore the ocean bottom. His first find, the wellknown ship Titanic, made Ballard famous. He was not happy with just one big find, however. He looked for—and found—other wellknown ships. One was the German battleship Bismarck. Another was the U. S.S. Yorktown, an aircraft carrier that sank during World War Ⅱ.
Today Robert Ballard is still an underwater explorer. He also heads an organization that encourages students to learn about science. Ballard hopes that some of the students will follow in his footsteps. After all, the world's huge oceans are mostly unknown. Who knows what remains to be discovered under the sea?

All of that changed, however, during my last summer of high school. At the age of 17, I flew across the country by myself for the first time! I was headed to Quebec to live in the province(省)with a French-speaking host family. I would learn French at a local college.
When I arrived, I met my host family. They didn't speak any English. Though nervous, I introduced myself as best I could.
On the first day of school, all of us students were given a test to determine our language level. We also signed a contract promising to speak only French all summer. This even included times we communicated with our other English-speaking classmates.
The struggle to communicate in a second language was harsh but exhilarating. I made a lot of new friends, ordered food from restaurants, and even saw a movie in French. I didn't understand most of it, but I loved the whole amazing experience.
On the weekends, my classmates and I took trips to different locations around the province. On one trip, we went whale watching on the St. Lawrence River. Even though it was raining, we could see giant whales swimming around our boat.
The most memorable part of our trip was a visit to historic Quebec City. I walked along the cobblestone(鹅卵石) streets and took pictures of the European﹣style buildings, and I learned about an important battle that took place nearby. I also got to enjoy a "beaver tail"﹣a special local food. It was truly an Eastern Canadian treat!
By the end of summer, I was communicating pretty fluently. I couldn't wait to go back to school and talk with my French teacher. Being fully immersed(沉浸)in a French﹣speaking environment was a valuable learning experience. At the time, I had no idea that I'd end up living abroad for more than 10 years. I'll never forget that first experience that paved the way for my future adventures.

Can’t you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head stubbornly — and felt the ache in my tooth. I’d thought I could hold out till my dentist came back from holiday, but the pain was really unbearable. I started calling the dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately. Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.
“If you come by right now,” the receptionist said, “the dentist will fit you in.”
I took my purse and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. What kind of dentist would be so eager to treat someone at such short notice? Why wasn’t he as busy as the others?
In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the bare walls and I became even more worried. The assistant noticed my nervousness and placed her warm hand over my ice-cold one.
When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “Don’t worry. The dentist is very good.”
“How long do I have to wait for him?” I asked impatiently.
“Come on, he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,” the assistant said.
“The artwork?” I was puzzled.
The chair went back. Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling. How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.
What a relief!

First there was a knight, a good man who fought well and knew many different countries. He was a true friend to everyone, and always helped people when they needed it. His clothes were old, dark, and dirty from many years of fighting.
Then there was a businessman with an expensive hat on his head. The man, who looked wealthier than he truly was, always said, “I’m doing very well.” A very quick thinker, he talked about ships and the sea a lot, and showed much interest in changing money from different countries.
After the businessman came a franklin (乡绅) with a white beard. He asked people from near and far to visit him at home as he liked eating and drinking and having a good time with others. He was an important man, he knew right from wrong, and people listened to him.
There was a woman from Bath. Her face was open, and nice-looking, but she couldn’t hear very well. In her red dress, she was a big woman with a big smile and big teeth, laughing a lot and talking easily. She knew all about love.
So there we were, all thirty of us, at the inn. The landlord, a tall fat man, brought us the best dinner in London. He would also join our journey tomorrow. After we finished eating, the landlord smiled, suggesting “We’re going to Canterbury tomorrow, and that’s four days from here. One by one, let’s all tell a story on the road to make the time go quicker. And to the teller of the best story we can give a free dinner here at my inn when we get back. What do you say?” We all said “yes” happily to him. Then the question for us was: Who goes first ?

【推荐3】A 47-year-old Frenchman had an unfortunate experience while walking around Cannes. Here he is to tell us all about it.
The Black Hole
I work in the philosophy department at the university. Just last week, I had some drinks with some friends in a bar. After a few glasses of wine, but not too many, mind you, I felt. It was about six in the evening, and it was starting to get dark. It had been raining heavily the past few days, but that night it was pleasant so I decided to walk home. However, I'd just turned the corner into my street when all of a sudden, "whoosh", I fell down an uncovered manhole.
Flying
It was an incredible experience. It was as if I was flying through the air. I could feel the cold, wet sides of the drain. Eventually my back was rubbing along the side, until "splash", I fell into a pool of running water.
A Water Ride
Now I was moving quite fast. The current was very strong — I guess it was because of all the heavy rain that had flooded the drain. Luckily the water wasn't very deep so I could keep my head above water. There was nothing I could do, so I lay back, with my hands behind my head, as if I was on slide in a water park, and just let myself go. It was quite pleasant really, except for the occasional mouthful of sickening water, and a horrible smell. When was it going to end? I was about to find out.
The End of the Ordeal
All of a sudden, I could see a light at the end of the tunnel. It started off quite small, but then it got bigger and bigger. A few seconds later I was shot up violently out of the drain, and onto the beach, right below the luxurious Majestic Hotel. I lay there for a few second, shaken, but unharmed. Then I picked myself up, walked up to the hotel and told them what had happened. Of course, at first it was hard to convince them that this dirty, wet middle-aged man with a horrible smell on him was in fact a dignified university professor. Anyway, they eventually believed me and allowed me to clean myself in one of the rooms.
Recovery
Miraculously, I was uninjured after my 30-minutes ride. I am currently in the process of charging the local council with failing to warn the public about the unmarked manhole.
Meanwhile, the town mayor has blamed "unusually strong rain fall" for the situation.
