Molly and her husband Rex ran a used bookstore in a small town. People, mostly kids, came here to read books, sell books and buy books. The morning had been full of rain, and passers-by were walking with narrow eyes under umbrellas. Molly rested both her hands on the counter and leaned(倾斜)forward to watch the world outside in the rain while Rex was busy sorting out books on the bookshelves. Rick, who sat on the floor burying himself in reading a hardback illustrated book, was the only customer in such a rainy day. Rick was a regular customer to the bookstore and he never sold a book or bought a book. He just read books.

“Can you keep this book for me?” Molly heard a shy voice and looked down to find it was little Rick that stood before the counter, holding the illustrated book and asked.

“Sure!” Molly nodded encouragingly. But the uncertainty remained on Rick’s face. “I’ll be back really soon. Promise. Tomorrow if I can.” Molly nodded to him as seriously as she was treating an adult. Molly wanted to ask him if there was anything difficult, but she kept silent. Anyway, she put the illustrated book in a drawer in case anyone else would take it. Most of the secondhand books in her store were unique. If it was sold, she would fail to keep her promise.

Rick didn’t return the following day, or the day after that. Molly was somehow disappointed. Rex suggested placing the illustrated book on the bookshelf so that others could read it or take it. In Rex’s opinion, children made promises all the time and they promised all kinds of things. When they came to a store and was attracted by something, they promised to come back and they asked the shopkeeper not to let anyone else take the things they wanted away. It happened all the time.

Shanti wanted the wooden doll in Ramu’s toy shop. “The one with the red dress, ” she told her best friend, Jodi.

“How will you afford it?” Jodi asked.

Shanti smiled, “I asked my mom if I could make jasmine garlands (茉莉花环) and sell them at my aunt’s market stall (摊位). Want to do that, too?”

“Good idea!” said Jodi.

Early the next morning, the girls met at the jasmine bushes outside of Shanti’s house. Beautiful white flowers surrounded them with fresh scent. They picked the flowers and dropped them into a basket. Then the girls sat under a tree and knotted(捆扎)the flowers into garlands. Shanti could already see herself hugging that beautiful doll.

“If we sell enough garlands, we can each get a doll, ” said Shanti.

Jodi shook her head. “My family is low on money this week. I’ll use my money to pay for Kiran’s medicine. ” Kiran was Jodi’s little brother. “Is he sick?”

Shanti asked. “He is. But when he gets his medicine, he’ll be fine. ” Jodi picked up her garlands.

“My mother is expecting me. I’ll meet you at the market. ”

Shanti spent the afternoon selling garlands at her aunt’s market stall. But where was Jodi?By early evening Shanti had sold all her flowers.

Shanti was on her way home when she saw Jodi heading to the market with her garlands. “Why are you so late?” Shanti asked.

“I had to watch Kiran while my mother did her work, ” Jodi said.

“Why didn’t you take him with you?” Shanti said.

Shanti knew Jodi wouldn’t make enough money for the medicine now. The market would be closing soon, Shanti looked at the money in her hand. It was supposed to be for. the beautiful doll she’d been dreaming of for so long. Then she looked at her friend’s tired face. “Here, keep this for the medicine. ”

Shanti put her money into Jodi’s hands.

That night, Shanti cried, thinking about the doll. What if someone bought it before she’d saved up enough again?

The next week, while Shanti and Jodi gathered blossoms, Kiran came, too. The medicine had cured his cough, and he helped them sell out all the garlands. When parting, Jodi said, “Shanti, we have prepared something for you. ” But Shanti was so anxious that she didn’t seem to have time to hear them out. Trust your bad luck

Before this time, I usually buy a first class train ticket. That is necessary! Because this is one of the most crowded and poorest region in the world, I am afraid that there are no seats in the general class. Unluckily, this time I was running late. I was informed there was no first class seating available, so I was forced to buy a general ticket.

The general coach was extremely crowded. Smell of sweat and sighs from tired bodies troubled me. I stepped over people sitting on the floor, asking them to make a little space for me to stand, but nobody moved. Finally, I had to shout at two poor people to make a standing place near the gate for me. As several hours passed, I continued changing the pressure on my legs, one by one, to ease the pain of standing. The entire time, I cursed(咒骂) in my heart, “Damn! Bad luck has ruined my day!”

Suddenly, at about 3 am, a strange sound woke me up. I scanned the coach. Everyone was sleeping. Hadn’t anyone else heard it? Beside the train gate, I noticed an empty space. That space wasn’t there before. I’d know it. For the entire journey, I’d stood just four meters from that gate. If there had been a space, I would have taken it. My mind raced. No! A young man was sleeping there just now. I shouted, “Pull the emergency chain!” I was nowhere near the chain.

A group of people awoke in surprise. “What’s going on?” They quizzed. “I think someone accidentally fell off the train.” I replied. Those men sitting near the chain stared wide-eyed, motionless, for fear of facing a fine or punishment. So I struggled through the crowd, reached for that emergency chain and pulled it. Finally, the train stopped.

Sam’s birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled his heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and he had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by his friends. However, this year was different. The burden of excessive homework and his parents’ struggling business weighed heavily on him, forcing Sam to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event he enjoyed dearly every year.

One day, during break, his best friend, Jim, with a curious look in his eyes, approached. “Are you going to have a birthday party this year?” Jim asked, sensing Sam’s sadness.

“No,” Sam sighed and replied sadly, “There’s just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties.”

He smiled weakly, trying to conceal his immense disappointment and stress, but Jim saw through his pretence (假装) easily. Jim nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Sam saw his talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious, Sam went over to them, but as soon as Jim saw him, he quickly walked away. Sam was startled by Jim’s strange actions and turned towards Sarah.

“What did he say?” Sam asked.

However, Sarah simply shrugged and walked away with Jim, leaving Sam standing there. feeling left out and anxious.

What is happening? San wondered anxiously. Are they keeping something from me?

As Sam’s birthday drew nearer, Jim was often found chatting softly with his other classmates. Whenever Sam went over to them, they would just walk away or tell him that they were talking about a secret which Sam was not allowed to know. Jim has never kept secrets from me before, Sam thought. His heart fell. Even his friends were distancing themselves from him! He swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure out what was happening. Why were his friends distancing themselves from him? And what were they hiding?
