I read the instructions carefully. Knights, rooks, bishops, pawns, a king, and a queen — each piece had a special starting place and its own way of moving. My heart sank. That night, I dreamed I was in a chess game, and the queens, kings, and knights were laughing at me. Even the knights’ horses were snickering (窃笑)! The next day, I told Mareya I was having second thoughts.
“Please don’t back out,” she said. “Remember our deal.”
“I would like to see your silly rabbit dance,” I said, smiling.
After school, I found the chess club’s meeting room and went inside. I looked around, but Mareya was nowhere in sight! To make matters worse, I didn’t know a single person in the room. Butterflies filled my stomach as I started to head toward the door.
“Hi!” said a friendly woman. “I’m Ms.Martinez.”

“What a crabby-looking lady (怨妇),” the cashier at my local convenience store whispered to her coworker. I was grabbing something off the shelf. Her eyes were small; her brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail so tight that it looked like her forehead would drop. Her mouth was shut serious. This lady looked like she had smelled something really bad. Then, I turned away from my own reflection in the convex security mirror (安全反射镜) at the back of the store. The crabby-looking lady... was me!
That night, I cried. I was the crabby-looking lady! Me! The girl once voted nicest smile by her high school class! Things must get changed! Right then and there I resolved to do one thing over the next year. One simple resolution: to smile. I didn’t need to wait for January 1st — I would start right now.
I resolved to smile at anyone and anything, even though they would let me down. And I also resolved to make a conscious effort to smile, at least ten times a day.

The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?” he thought to himself.
After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked.
“No, daddy, I’m awake.” replied the boy.
I’ve been thinking. maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here’s the $10 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” he shouted. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled(皱巴巴的)bills.

It’s no laughing matter
Much research has been conducted about why humans laugh and what they laugh at—not only by psychologists, but also by philosophers, for the study of laughter crosses many disciplines. So, why do we laugh?
The general belief is that humans laugh as a social bonding mechanism. Studies have shown that humans are over 30 times more likely to laugh with others than alone. Even “laughing gas” works more effectively on a group of people than on a single person. We all know that laughter can be very infectious.
Some researchers believe that laughter in humans was born out of the relief our ancestors felt after danger had passed. If smiling in humans is considered an extension of the “fear” face in primates (灵长类动物), then laughter is a signal that the fear has gone. When we laugh, our “fight or flight” reaction to danger is temporarily switched off, further indicating that we now feel relaxed. So laughter is a way of discharging stress and anxiety.
Although laughter is universal, people don’t always laugh at the same things, and what people find funny often changes as they get older. Children find a lot to laugh about, as they are encountering so many things for the first time, which offers constant surprises. Teenagers often like jokes that adults find annoying, while adults often laugh at jokes about funny things in their own everyday lives. Furthermore, because a lot of our humor comes from a shared cultural background, countless jokes don’t cross language and cultural barriers, with the result that what’s funny in Australia may well not be in Austria.
Regardless of what different people find funny, people ought to laugh as much as they can. While we’re laughing, we increase the killer cells that destroy viruses. So, the next time someone tells you they nearly died laughing, tell them it’s far from the truth!

Many years ago at Christmas time I parked my car in the town centre on my way to the post office to post my Christmas cards. It was the last posting day for Christmas cards if they were to be received before Christmas. As I came out of the car park, I saw a young boy on the other side of the road. He’d been to a phone shop and they’d told him it would be £80 to get a new screen.
I had to help. However, it was very close to Christmas and I was nearly penniless（身无分文的）and waiting on my next pay cheque. I had some dealings with guys in the mobile phone repair shop, so I took him there. I knew the guys would have helped me out and my intention was to get the screen on the phone fixed and I would pay for it the following week. I knew they would trust me on this. I brought him with me, but the shop was closed! I had the mobile number of one of the guys’ but I couldn’t get in contact with him. What next? What could I do now?
