Jamestown, Virginia

The city of Jamestown is the second-oldest city in the United States in North America. It was founded on April 26, 1607. By the end of 1865, most of the settlement had fallen into ruin. Preservation efforts began in the 1900s. In 2007, Queen ElizabethⅡ of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was a guest for the 400th-anniversary celebration of Jamestown’s founding.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe holds the distinction of being the oldest state capital in the United States as well as New Mexico’s oldest city. Santa Fe (and present-day New Mexico) didn’t become a part of the United States until 1848. Today, Santa Fe is known for its Spanish territorial style of architecture.

Kecoughtan, Virginia

Jamestown’s founders first met the region’s native people at Kecoughtan, Virginia, where members of the Kikotan people lived. In 1690, the town was developed into part of the larger town of Hampton. Today, it remains a part of the larger municipality (自治市).

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Plymouth was the site of what most of us know as the first Thanksgiving. Located on the southwestern shores of Massachusetts Bay, present-day Plymouth had been occupied by native people for centuries.

Located in the Kingdom of Jordan, Petra was built directly into the cliffside around 312 BCE by the Nabataeans. The city includes temples, tombs, and its most well-known building — the Treasury.

Best time to go: Summer can get very hot in Jordan, and winter is much colder than you may realize. Weatherwise, aim for spring or fall.

The Colosseum

The Colosseum remains Rome’s top attraction. Built in the first century by Emperor Vespasian, the massive theater spans 620 by 513 feet, which would hold 80,000 people.

Best time to go: You’ll find fewer tourists there during Rome’s low season (winter), weekdays and during the opening hour or near closing time. If you show up in summer at midday, it’s going to be hot!

【推荐2】Culture: Festival starts to celebrate harvest

Nadun Festival, celebrated by the Tu Nationality, falls between the 12th day of the seventh month and the 15th day of the ninth month on the lunar calendar. The annual festival is often described as the word’s longest carnival. Temple fairs are held during the two months to celebrate the harvest. It was included in the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006.

Art: Qianlong vase to go under the hammer

A porcelain vase from Emperor Qianlong’s(1735-96) collection will go under the hammer in Hong Kong in the fall, Sotheby’s announced. The 40-cm antique was sold for an astonishing 43 million pounds($55.25 million) at the Bainbridge auction(拍卖)house in the United Kingdom in 2010. It was displayed at an exhibition in New York in 1905 and was purchased by a Japanese collector in 1924. It has remained in the private collection for almost a century.


Travel: Chinese tourists are biggest spenders

China maintained its leading role in the global tourism market with outbound(出境的) tourists spending $258 billion last year, accounting for one-fifth of the world’s total spending on tourism, according to a world tourism report.

A MECCA FOR FOOD

In Chinatown, a mix of new and old restaurants meets everyone’s needs. Early birds should stop by Philippe The Original, a local restaurant that’s beloved for French Dip sandwiches, but also serves a good classic American breakfast. Night owls will want to head to Full House Seafood on Hill Street, which is open late into the night.

CHINESE AMERICAN MUSEUM

Food is far from the only reason to visit Chinatown. People interested in history will want to start their trip at the Chinese American Museum (CAM), lying just outside of Chinatown at El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument. The museum is housed in the Garnier Building, the oldest surviving Chinese building in a major area of California.

CENTRAL PLAZA

A big statue of Bruce Lee has become a must-photograph site in Chinatown’s Central Plaza. The late martial arts star once had a studio in Chinatown at 628 W. College St.

Nearby is Dragon Chasing Pearl, which was originally painted on the wall in 1941 by Tyrus Wong. The artist, who passed away in December 2016 at age 106, was famous for his work in films, particularly as the lead artist on Disney’s Bambi.
