After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs (俱乐部) at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly benefit (有益于) you.
Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities which opened up many new doors for me.
Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on your applications (申请书). Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Being outgoing is considered a very good quality, which shows that you are determined and willing to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. What’s more, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews.
Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubs are good places to spend time, with good people to fall back on.
The most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefits it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organized are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs.
So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now.

Stop wasting food at school.
“The children are making a big effort to think in a sensible way about the food they put on their plates. We now have about 15% less waste and we think this percentage grows as more children join in the campaign,” school lunch director Marge Kaplan said. The school canteen now offers two portion (份) sizes for all main meals: small and large. This week they’ll replace single bread rolls with slices of bread. You can take as many slices as you want, but one at a time.
Latest news!
From next week you’ll be able to put any waste from fresh fruit and vegetables into the special green bin at the back of the canteen. Miss Norris, the school gardener, will empty the bin each day into a giant compost (堆肥) container in the school’s vegetable garden. That can be used to improve the quality of soils.
Stop wasting food at home.
Every year, we waste about a third of our food. In the UK, more than 97% of food waste ends up in a landfill (废物填埋) site. That’s a lot! Come to a special meeting with supermarket owner Carlos Rodriguez to learn how we can save food and money at home!
Campaign meeting!

About the Competition
The Wharton Global High School Investment Competition is a free, online investment simulation (模拟) for high school students(9th to 12th grade)and teachers. Students work in teams of four to seven, guided by a teacher as their advisor (顾问). Together, they learn about teamwork, communication, risk, companies and industry analysis and many other important aspects of investing.
Teams examine a brief case study featuring a potential client and are tasked with working closely to meet that client’s long term investment goals. Equipped with an approved stock list and the Wharton Investment Simulator (WInS), which allows them to simulate (模拟) stock trading, students develop an investment strategy, analyze sectors and companies, and build a portfolio (投资组合) using $ 100 ,000 in virtual cash provided by WInS over the course of 10 weeks. Winners are selected on the strength of their team strategies, not on the growth of their portfolios.
Results
Final reports are reviewed by a team of judges, who select 50 semi-finalist teams. Those teams are invited to present their strategies to a panel of expert judges at the virtual semifinals. The top 10 teams from the semifinals move on to the final of the competition, the Global Finale, at Wharton in Philadelphia.
Please Remember
Once advisors register for the competition, they will receive a confirmation email with instructions to set up their student team accounts on WInS, our trading platform. People used to protect cultural relics by manual work-photographing and rubbing (拓印) techniques. Although this method can keep the basic information, many vital details are still ignored.
At present, 3D digitalization has been proved to be the most popular technology in the field of cultural heritage. The 3D digital technology can be used for data archiving (存档), displaying as well as restoration.
3D scanning (扫描) technology features fast measurement speed and accurate capturing (绘制) capacity. It’s good at collecting enough and accurate 3D data from different perspectives, which is beneficial to the restoration of historical relics when they suffer accidental damage. Experts can also virtually restore the heritage through the computer, and finish assistant research by means of accurate 3D models.
For historical relics’ protection, nevertheless, 3D scanning isn’t the only way put into use. 3D printing also contributes to displaying historical relics. It provides people with more chances to get to know historical relics and better understand human beings’ history.
Yucheng Museum unearthed a new collection of cultural relics in April 2019. One of the most urgent issues for archaeologists was data archiving. Invited by Quimbaya Art x Tech, ScanTech conducted 3D scanning immediately on these relics by 3D scanner. This handheld 3D laser scanner was equipped with the world’s leading-edge technologies and brought great convenience for further restoration and research.
To avoid any damage, Yucheng Museum combined with 3D printing technology based on 3D data to reproduce 1:1 3D models of cultural relics for exhibition, which aimed to make more people get close to history and pass on the precious historical heritage.
Many thousand-year cultural treasures have gradually disappeared from our sight due to technical problems. However, 3D scanning and 3D printing technologies provide very effective 3D solutions for historical relic display and protection.

One of the major things that I cannot imagine living without anymore is mobile payment. There are two major mobile payment apps here, Alipay and WeChat Pay. Both have similar payment features, though WeChat has more like a social media. That’s why I will focus on this “super app”.
So far, I’ve been overwhelmed by how efficient life can be with WeChat. It is present in every aspect of people’s daily life, from paying water and electricity bills, meals, cinema tickets to calling a taxi, following news, and chatting with friends. Most merchants have adopted it, from tiny local street food stalls to high-end(高端的)stores. A cashier may be surprised if you do not pay with WeChat or Alipay at the grocers or in restaurants. And it seems like the entire payment industry has encouraged this shift to mobile payment, equipping payment terminals with QR code scanners to simplify payments. Mobile payments are so common here that I realize that I can perfectly survive if I forget my wallet at home one day because most days I just don’t take it out of my bag!
As mentioned earlier, WeChat is also a major social media platform with about one billion daily users, which is more than the entire population of European Union. So I have to say Chinese technological and digital development is a real miracle.
1. What does the underlined word “overwhelmed” mean in paragragh 2?A.Encouraged. | B.Shocked. | C.Confused. | D.Panicked. |

Now, scientists have developed robots that behave in much the same way. We can find robots everywhere. They build cars, play chess and can clean your house. They may someday drive your car, too. Two robots, named Spirit and Opportunity, were sent to Mars on a mission to explore the red planet.
Jeff Clune, a computer scientist at the University of Wyoming, says robots also help people in natural disasters. Robots are applied in search and rescue operations following an earthquake. They may someday also be used to examine the ruins of a nuclear accident, like the one in Fukushima, Japan.
Mr. Clune says, “Robots can be sent to a lot of places said to be unsafe. The problem is that all of those types of situations and environment are extremely unpredictable and dangerous. And it is very likely that robots and humans in those situations become damaged.” He and other scientists are developing technology so that robots will continue operating after the first sign of injury. They want the machines to have the ability to make changes and continue performing until they can be repaired.
Mr. Clune and researchers in France have added one more operation to the skill set of robots working under difficult conditions. They programmed a hexapod robot, one with six legs, and a robotic arm to learn how to deal with injury. Once the robots become damaged? they use their intuition and knowledge of how their body works to find a way to deal with the damage.
The robots are also programmed with child-like curiosity. In other words, they are always asking questions and looking for answers. The whole process takes about a minute for the robots to find a way to overcome damage.
