Parenting teenagers was challenging. For a long time, I could feel the tension between Jordan, my teenage son and me, especially over his curfew. (儿童晚归时间的规定)

One Sunday afternoon, the unpleasant discussion happened again.

“I’m seventeen years old, but I still have a curfew. None of my friends has a curfew. You don’t trust me.” Jordan said.

“It’s not about trust,” I said. “It’s about wanting what’s best for you and I want to protect you.”

“Protect me from what? Having fun?” He rolled his eyes and walked away.

I sighed, trying to hold back my tears. How could I make Jordan see that those rules existed because I love him, not because I was trying to control him.

I decided to go for a walk, hoping the cool October air would clear my head. I opened the front door and nearly stepped on him: Meatball, the small black cat we had adopted two weeks ago.

Meatball used to be a homeless cat and until now he still hadn’t adjusted to the life of a full-time indoor cat. After a few hours in the house, he’d sit by the door, begging for someone to let him back outside. After a few hours outside, he’d sit by the door again, ready to come back in the house. He just really liked being able to come and go as he pleased. “How I wished I were a cat like Meatball.” Jordan kept saying over and over.

One snowy night in January, the temperature was unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, begging to go outside again. I patted his head, telling him to stay in for his own good or he would freeze. Jordan whistled nearby and went into his room.

At dawn, Taylor opened her sleepy eyes and looked out of the window at the foggy field below.   “NO!” she cried, now fully awake. Buttermilk the cow was in Mama's daisy patch (雏菊地).

I must have forgotten to lock the gate last night, Taylor thought as she pulled a sweater over her head. Mama was planning to sell daisy bouquets (花束) at the fair next week, but Buttermilk was eating the flowers.

Taylor hurried outside and grabbed the lead rope on the wall. “Why can't you stay in the field?” she called to Buttermilk as she headed across the yard to the daisy patch.

Buttermilk still stood there chewing flowers. Annoyed, Taylor thought to herself, “When I grew up, I'll be an artist and paint pictures all day. I'll never own a cow. Too much trouble.”

Just as Taylor was about to throw the lead rope onto Buttermilk's collar, the family dog, Red, rounded the corner of the house. Startled, Buttermilk took off, tearing through the daisies and across the yard. She finally ran through the open gate and into the field.

“Thank goodness!” Taylor said as she closed the gate and secured the lock.

She turned to look at the flower garden, where most of the daisies were either eaten or trampled (踩踏).

Mama came out of the house. “What's going on?” she asked. She looked sadly at her garden.

“I forgot to lock the gate,” Taylor said. “I'm so sorry.”

“I know you are.” Mama sighed and gave Taylor a hug. “You learned an important lesson today.”

Taylor's heart was heavy as she went back into the house. She had to think of a way to make it up to her mother.

It was a fantastic and cheery early summer day. The sun was shining brilliantly, with clouds dancing in the blue sky. The birds were singing merrily and the colourful flowers were in full bloom. There was a warm gentle breeze. Bright green leaves swung in the wind, occasionally falling to the ground, cast off from the trees they trusted.

It was a lovely morning to be outdoors, to enjoy oneself in the splendid beauty of nature. There’s nothing quite as curative as being out in nature. Little Bear hated being locked at home. He wanted to go out to relieve his boredom. While his mother was busy with the daily domestic tasks, Little Bear slipped out through the backdoor. He was so eager for independence that he ignored his parents’ words and raced off into the woods near his home on his own.

As he jogged along the winding path from his home, Little Bear felt like an adventurer. Soon, the stone path ended and he found himself in the forest. He had never been so far from home all by himself. As Little Bear explored the plants of different colors in the abundant green forest, the fear of being alone in the great outdoors began to wear off. He immediately began to regret his careless decision to escape from his parents.

By afternoon, the sun was burning hot. Little Bear was weak from hunger and thirst. He felt tired and hungry. He longed for his mother’s cooking. He longed for his nice cosy bed. He longed to go home. Little Bear scanned the surroundings. Everything looked unfamiliar to him. He was lost! There was not a soul in sight from whom he could ask for directions. Little Bear sat on a rock, alone and depressed. Looking down, all he could see were his little paw prints imprinted in the mud.

Robert and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day Robert and Henry were going home from school. When they turned around a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”

“No,” said Henry. “Let us go quietly home and not meddle in (插手) this quarrel. We have nothing to do with (与……没有关系) it and may get into trouble.

“You are a coward (胆小鬼), and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went to school as usual.

Late, Robert told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him. From then on, they looked down upon (瞧不起) Henry and didn’t want to play with him together.

Henry was sad but he wasn’t angry with Robert. He just ignored (不理睬) the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as well. However, Robert didn’t invite Henry to go home with him any more. He had some other boys and they also said Henry was a coward. Every day after school, they didn’t go home directly but went to the river or somewhere to play games and had a lot of fun.

A few days later, Robert was bathing with his new friends in a river, and got out of his depth (深度). He struggled, and screamed (尖叫) for help, but all in vain (徒劳). The other boys got out of the water as fast as they could, and they did not even try to help him.
