I remember the first time I met Roy. He was standing in the center of a group of boys, talking and laughing. He was a cute boy known in the class for his kindness and generosity. My name is Daniel, a new boy in the class. Our whole family had moved from the north of England because of my father being offered a job here. I lost all my old friends and felt lonely at my new school.
Most students in my new class weren’t very interested in a shy new boy. Roy was one of the few people who were kind to me. He often invited me to join his particular group, and as a result, I started getting to know people. Roy and I became good friends. We trusted each other and we could talk about personal matters, things that were important to us.
But just under a year ago, Roy’s father was knocked over by a car, who died a few days later. His family had to move to a much smaller house in order to manage financially. Roy changed completely, becoming silent and moody, who seemed to lose all interest in his work. These days, Roy and I saw each other from time to time, but we were no longer close.
Last week our school had a big fair in order to raise money for a charity. It was very successful and by the end of the day, we had made about f500.Our class teacher, Mr. White, came and chatted to a group of us that included Roy, and held up a box for us to see. There’s£500 in here,” he said with a smile.
Having left something in the classroom, I went inside to get it, and found Roy holding a wallet in his hand. Seeing me, he walked out without saying a word. The next morning, we were told that the money had been stolen. Mr. White had left the box in the classroom for a few minutes, but when he came back it had disappeared.
This weekend morning, having thought about the situation for a while, I decided to ask Roy about the the theft and went to see him.

【推荐1】When I first met Molly, she instantly became my best friend. We enjoyed the same things, laughed at the same jokes and even had the same love for sunflowers.
It seemed like we had found each other at the right time. And our friendship grew very strong. In fifth grade, we were not in the same class, but at lunch we both sat in nearby seats and turned around to talk to each other. However, our big mouths got us into trouble, and we were warned that we would never be in the same classes again if we kept this up.
That summer, Molly and I went swimming, and played outside. We bought best-friend charms (小装饰品) and made sure to wear them as often as possible.
Summer went by very quickly, and middle school began. As the teachers had warned us, we were not in the same classes. But we still talked on the phone. Nothing could destroy this friendship.
Seventh grade started and, again, we were not in the same classes. It seemed as if we were being put to a test. We both made new friends. Molly started to hang out with a new group of people and was growing very popular.
We spent less time together, and we rarely talked on the phone. At school, I would try to talk to her, but she would just ignore me. When we did take a minute to talk, one of her more popular friends would come up and Molly would just walk away with her, leaving me in the dust. It hurt.
I was so confused. I’m sure she didn’t know at the time how badly I felt, but how could I talk to her if she wouldn’t listen? I began to hang around with my new friends, but it just wasn’t the same. I met Erin, who was also a friend of Molly’s. She was in the same situation I was with Molly. She and Molly had been close friends, and lately Molly had been treating Erin the same way as me. We decided to talk to her.

Hudson had been looking forward to this trip for weeks. This was more than the usual excitement about end-of-year trips. And now, finally, after weeks of expectation, Hudson, Davion, Tasha, and their friends Trey and Justin were at Six Flags Great America, which was home to more roller coasters and games than any place north of Florida.
They were waiting in line for the Twisted Twister—the scariest roller coaster. In front of them, the coaster rose threateningly out of the ground. From the very beginning, the Twisted Twister lived up to its name. The black coaster tracks corkscrewed 5 almost immediately. Then, the riders in the yellow cars were given a moment to catch their breath as they were cranked (转动) slowly to the top of a hill. But the relief didn’t last long. As soon as the roller coaster cars were over the peak, the track twisted again. And again and again and again.
Glancing at it, Hudson felt his stomach was too tight to say anything at all, The Twisted Twister was the scariest roller coaster he had ever seen. But he wasn’t about to mention his fear to his friends. Because they would tell him that he was acting like a little kid, too scared to go on the park’s best ride. He felt dorky and awkward standing there. The sea of people between them and the Twisted Twister was steadily getting smaller. Hudson smiled weakly as his friends cheered when they counted just three rope barriers to go. Then two. Then one. And then they were at the stairs. Davion, Justin, and Trey were nearly jumping up and down with excitement. But Hudson could only hear people screaming, and he couldn’t even tell if the screams were because of delight or terror. And he knew, suddenly, that he could not make it.

A quite funny thing happened to me last Friday. It was a fine day and I went to London to do some shopping. I had planned to get some Christmas presents. I also needed to find some books for my course at college as I am a student of Oxford.
That morning I caught an early train to London, so by early afternoon I could buy something that I wanted. Anyway, I'm not very fond of London, all the noise and traffic, and I made some arrangements for that evening. I took a taxi to Waterloo station. I couldn't really afford a taxi, but I wanted to catch the 3:30 p.m. train. Unfortunately, the taxi got stuck in a traffic jam, and by the time I got to the Waterloo station the train had just gone. Disappointedly, I had to wait an hour for the next one. While I was waiting, I bought myself an evening newspaper, The Standard, and wandered over to the station buffet (自助餐). At that time of the day it was nearly empty, and I bought a coffee and a packet of biscuits (饼干)—chocolate biscuits. I'm very fond of chocolate biscuits. I found that there were plenty of empty tables and I sat by one near the window, where I could cozily enjoy my beverage and biscuits. Then, I began doing the crossword. I always enjoy doing crossword puzzles.(填字游戏)
After a couple of minutes a man sat down just opposite me. It seemed that there was nothing special about him, except that he was very tall. In fact, judging from his clean dark suit and a fine briefcase, he looked pretty like a typical city businessman. I didn't say anything and I carried on with my crossword.

Caroline, a woman in North Carolina, would welcome her 70th birthday.Although she was so old, she had never realized her dream of having a birthday party. She also wished to receive 70 birthday cards, the same number as her age.
Caroline had retired from teaching. She had been a considerate and selfless teacher in a middle school in North Carolina. Several years ago,on her last day on the job,David, the monitor, asked her what her wish was. “I will be 70 years old,8 years after my retirement. I become so old, but I have never had a big birthday party,so I want to have a dance birthday party. I would love to have square dancing at my birthday party,hahaha...”she said, laughing. At that time,David thought the wish was not quite too difficult to realise, and he could help her to fulfill(实现)it.
However, eight years passed, Caroline’s students grew up and struggled for their work and life. They seldom went to visit her. In her childhood, life was hard and her mother had little time to accompany on her birthday. During her teaching career, she was always busy with her work and also had no time to celebrate any of her birthdays. So at her coming 70th birthday, she wanted her hair and makeup done, and she expected to wear the same dress she wore when she was young.
Caroline was also concerned about another thing, and that was receiving 70 birthday cards sent by email to her for her birthday! She said to herself, “That was just a dream. Dreams are usually impossible to achieve.”But she was counting down her birthday, “Four, three, two...”
Her birthday finally came. She got up early as usual and cleaned her backyard. Suddenly her cell phone rang. “Good morning,Caroline. I’m your student,Mike. How have you been recently?”She responded to Mike happily. She thought a student’s greeting was her best birthday gift. She began to work more energetically, and in a moment the yard was cleared. Then she went into the living room to rest.

In the farmers' market, there were many other stalls (摊位) with all kinds of food for sale as well as colourful rows of fruit and vegetables set out on tables. Cooked food stalls filled the air with the wonderful smells of hot tasty snacks, and the smell of fresh coffee was everywhere.
"Wow," Gus cried out, "Jam (果酱)!"
Just in front of him, there was a jam stall that sold all kinds of home-made jam. But the only kind Gus wanted was strawberry, so he bought a jar. He couldn't help but taste the jam immediately. It was OK, he frowned (皱眉) and shook his head, but never as good as Rose's, whose jam was just magic.
Rose was his neighbour, an elderly lady who lived alone but liked company now and again. Her doorbell was usually too quiet before Gus and his mom moved to the village after his father's death. Gus often rang her doorbell and asked whether she needed anything from the supermarket as he and his mother were going to town. In return, Rose would often give Gus a jar of jam. Gus was amazed how jam could be so delicious, so whenever free he would be at Rose's home watching her make the super jam.
Suddenly, an idea struck Gus. Probably he could try that to make some money and help his mum. He then bought a bag of potatoes for Rose for her kind offer of wonderful jam.
