Ashley Jost bought a book at a bookstore in Columbia, Missouri. There was a surprise waiting for her inside.
“I was sitting on the sofa and the dog started barking (叫) at a stranger,” Jost said. “I put the book down to pet the dog and five dollars fell out on the floor.” She knew the money wasn’t hers. When she started turning the pages, she found a pink note stuck inside.
The note read, “I was having a hard day. I thought maybe I could brighten someone else’s day with this little surprise. Go buy a coffee. Practice some self-care today. Remember that you are loved. You are excellent. You are strong. Love, Lisa.”
“Random (随机的) acts of kindness often happen to strangers on the Internet, not to me.” Jost felt it was her duty to share the note. So she posted it on the Internet. Her post has been liked more than 3,000 times. People offer to do their own random acts of kindness, including her.
Jost hid surprise love notes and lots of Starbucks gift cards which total five dollars in coffee shops, restaurants and libraries. Her dad bought drink for the person behind him in line at a shop. Another woman said that she was encouraged to do her own act of kindness in honor of her 19-year-old daughter, who died in a car accident a few months ago.
Jost says she plans to do at least one kind thing every week from now on. “This has shown me the value of checking in with people around me and making sure that I take these chances to tell them, ‘Don’t forget that you are loved, you’re excellent and you are strong,’ as Lisa said. I don’t think we can ever do that enough.”
After seeing many people talk about the post online, Lisa mailed Jost a card to her office. She wrote that she’d wanted to make something positive—she never really expected this to happen the way it has.

The situation became so extreme that the vegetables got totally fed up and decided to use up all the water in the ground so that the tree would dry up. The tree answered back by refusing to give the vegetables shadow from the hot midday sun, so they both began to dry up. Before long, the vegetables were really thin and the tree’s branches were drying up.
Neither of them thought that the gardener, on seeing his vegetable field becoming worse, would stop watering it. When he did that, both the tree and the vegetables really learned what thirst was. There seemed to be no solution, but one of the vegetables, a small courgette(小胡瓜), understood what was going on, and decided to deal with it. Despite the little water and the unbearable heat, the little courgette did all he could to grow, grow...He managed to grow so big that the gardener started watering the field again. The gardener wanted to enter that beautiful big courgette in some gardening contest.
And so the vegetables and the tree realized that it was better to help each other than to fight. They should really learn how to live in harmony with those around them, doing the best they could. When her father died tragically in a car accident, leaving her mother to support three daughters on a modest income, paying for college became out of the question.
Around that time, Steph tried to figure out what to do with a life that had differed so much from the plan she’d carefully laid out. The answer came one afternoon when she found a list from the English teacher she’d had in her junior year, Dorothy Clark. One afternoon, Mrs. Clark walked into the classroom carrying a pile of papers. She instructed each students to take one. The handout was titled Mrs. Clark’s Book List. “It wasn’t homework,” the teacher announced, “but it could be a road map. Some of you might not go on to higher education, but you can continue to learn.” It would, she believed, form the equivalent of two years at a liberal arts college.
“She knew the income levels of the kids in my high school,” says Steph. “Working-class and logging families. She knew most of us would not go to college. But she knew we could continue to learn after high school. She was right about that.” Steph studied the list. Each of those books sparked her passion to learn more, which made her look for other books that weren’t on the list, hoping to deepen her knowledge. Over the years, the reading list was a constant in her life, traveling with her even on vacations.
Now Steph is 70 and she never did get to college. But she has only four books left to read from the list. She expects to complete them sometime in 2023. “Each of the books has added something to who I am and how I see the world.” she says, “I now have gained an insight to see why things happened and what it might mean.”

He stopped to look at the front row of shoes, and he felt happy to see that the pair of shoes he wanted very much was still there. He looked down at his old shoes, and he felt sorry for himself, because he wanted very much to own them for his coming birthday.
Sadly, the boy walked away, deep in thought — how to tell his mother about it. He knew very well his mother had very little money. He decided not to go home at once, because he looked sad and his mother would notice it. So he went to the park and sat on the grass. There he saw a boy moving a wheelchair with his hands. Mike looked at him and was surprised to see that the boy had no feet. He looked at his own feet. “It’s much better to be without shoes than without feet.” he thought. Throughout his four years at Kellenberg Memorial High School in the US. Abreu made community service, an important part of his life. “I don't know where he finds the time to do everything.” said Erin Ronan, Alreu's math teacher. “He is truly a class act.”
As an honored student, Abreu, 18, took part in different voluntary activities after school, during weekends and summer holidays. These included helping staff at the public library, doing landscape work at kellenberg, and serving customers at a local restaurant.

In 2019, when Emily was in her second year of high school, her dad suffered from cancer. The news was difficult for the family. Books became an even bigger comfort, and she started thinking about families in similar situations. When her father recovered, she came up with a plan to help others. “The idea came from the fact that there were kids who were facing the same problem,” she said.
Then, Emily started the book drive in her hometown, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The goal was to collect books and give them to kids being treated for cancer in local hospitals. Her father was not surprised by this plan. “She always wants to do things for the neighborhood,” he said. Since the start of the book drive, which she calls For Love & Buttercup, Emily has collected more than 10,000 books.
Emily had no idea how much attention her work would get. She started by posting on social media, asking people in her area to donate. “I was expecting maybe two or three neighbors to do it,” she said. “But it ended up blowing up,” especially when newspapers began reporting it.
The Children’s Inn is one of the places where Emily has donated books. “Donations like Emily’s share a piece of the world with kids and families that they may not experience,” said its director, Aisha Campbell. Emily continues to run the book drive with her parents’ help. She hopes to one day make it reach more kids. Genovese was only 18 years old when she created the first version of the aided device in a course that introduces students to engineering design in the biomedical engineering fields. As part of the design projects for that first-year course, students worked with customers in the community. Genovese met Elissa, a woman living with dystopia. “Elissa mentioned that she had a hard time doing the buttons on her shirt, a hard time writing, but one thing that really stood out to me was that she had a really difficult time painting and that she was a talented painter,” Genovese said. “I wanted to help give her back her passion and improve her quality of life.”
Genovese said she saw a way that a device could assist. Her design was made on the principle of a 3D printer, with a person’s hand as the nozzle (喷嘴). The device’s unique sliding mechanical device guides hand movements in all directions when the user grasps a handpiece (手持件) tailored to their level of hand impairment (损伤). The handpiece can hold a variety of writing tools such as pens, pencils, paintbrushes, markers, etc. Genovese had a list of people testing the first few versions. Finally, she found one that worked. “Elissa loved it and she was able to paint again,” she said.
“Then I visited every single hospital, clinic, nursing home and retirement home in my city, and introduced it to over 150 patients and doctors,” Genovese said. One girl named Bella, who suffered cerebral palsy, tried the device out. “As soon as she began painting, the widest smile spread across her face. She turned to her mom and said, ‘Mom, I want one.’ At that moment, I realized this is an invention that can change the lives of so many people,” Genovese said.

I could only blame myself. In the family, nobody else’s hands went in the sauce except my own. But that night, as I explained with a touch of panic that a colander is the thing with holes in it, I wondered what else I hadn’t prepared Ray for.
As parents, while we focus on our sons’ confidence and character, we perhaps don’t always consider that we are also raising someone’s future roommates, boyfriends, husbands, or fathers. I wanted to know that I’d raised a boy who would never ask the woman in his life, “What’s for dinner?” So I came up with a plan: I would offer Ray a private home economics course. I was delighted to find that he didn’t say no. For two hours, three days a week, Ray was all mine. One day, as his tomato sauce reduced on the stove, he washed and seasoned a chicken for roasting. Then he rolled out the piecrust (馅饼皮) and filled it with apples, all while listening to my explanation on the importance of preheating an oven.
I knew that he would rather have been shooting hoops in the driveway than learning to mend socks with his mother — he tried to beg not to have sewing lessons, even though I insisted that one day, someone would find the sight of him fixing his own shirt very attractive — but it couldn’t be denied that he was learning, and more than just housekeeping. “I appreciate what you do as a mom,” he told me one day. Ray now understands the finer points of cooking, and more importantly, he realizes there’s nothing masculine (男子气概的) about being helpless.
Now, not only can he make his own dinner, but he can make a big meal for his family. That’s what I call a man. I’m glad I prepared so great a present for my future daughter in-law.

The Dillard’s where she worked in Tyler, Texas, was only a15-minute drive from her house, but traffic could sometimes double the commute, for which Mebane, now 91, no longer had the patience. Thus, she retired from her job at Dillard’s.
Mebane began working as an “elevator girl” at the Mayer & Schmidt department store in 1949 when she was seventeen, through a work-study program at Tyler High School. The store was acquired by Dillard’s in 1956.
She moved to the men’s clothing department, and later the cosmetics (化妆品) counter, where she stayed until she retired. “There were gift baskets one of the girls just couldn’t sell,” says Mebane. “They asked me to try, so I stepped out and talked to people about the basketa...I sold every single one. So I was told that’s where I was staying.”
Mebane followed the same morning routine for 74 years: Waking up at 6:00 am, making a pot of coffee, preparing a quick breakfast, and then getting to Dillard’s at 9:00 am sharp. “I loved going to work every day,” says Mebane. “If you’re content with what you’re doing. why not keep doing it?”
Her best advice for finding a good career is not to take a job simply because it pays well, because “money can disappoint you,” Mebane warns. “Finding something you’re good at and people you enjoy working with is so much more important.”
Since she started working at Dillard’s, Mebane had opportunities to become a manager, but she always turned the offers down. “Nobody likes management, because they have to make tough decisions,” she says. “I liked my friends and work, and I wanted to keep them, so I just focused on being the best salesperson I could be.”
Many of Mebane’s former co-workers visit her in the retirement village where she has recently moved, taking her out to lunch, the movies or shopping.

On arrival, I followed a couple of ladies into the cafe and waited to get a menu. One lady asked the waiter to help find one table for them. But the cafe was rather full then. There was only one left in the corner. Then, the lady asked me if I got my own table. I said, “I think you could get your own and I could wait for a smaller one, as I’m here to celebrate my birthday alone.” The lady immediately suggested that we share a table together. At that moment, I thought that was a lovely idea and nodded my head.
I went to pay for my meal and a drink. But I was told it had been paid for. On sitting at the table, I offered to pay for their meal and was told that I didn’t have to pay on my birthday. That was a simple gift for me from the ladies who I just met for the first time, which really touched my heart.
We had a beautiful 40 minutes together and we shared many topics before they had to continue on their journey. It was more than I could have expected for the day. “Thank you!
