During the summer holiday, visiting museums has become a new fashion, with several famous museums being considered as “must-visit” places by visitors. Tourists were seen queuing for long hours in front of museums and getting entrance tickets became more challenging.
According to media reports, the Henan Museum received more than 12,000 visitors this summer, nearly double that of the same period in 2019. The Hangzhou Museum recorded 12,800 visitors on July 16, setting a new daily attendance record. In response to the growing need, 46 museums in Beijing canceled their Monday closures and remained open daily until August 31.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the “museum fever” can be caused by various factors, including the public’s increasing enthusiasm for traditional Chinese culture, the increasing market for youth educational tours and summer camps, as well as the continuous development of museums.
Lin Liugen, the director of the Institute of Archaeology at Zhejiang University, said the “museum craze” reflects a deep connection between the public and traditional culture. As the economy and society progress, more people want to have a deeper understanding of China’s rich culture and history.
Summer camps, family trips and educational tours have been the primary forms of tourism this summer, with museum visits becoming a must-do activity for travelers.
Besides, the application of new technologies has made cultural relics (遗物) easier to reach. For instance, 3D projection technology breathes life into those relics, enabling them to come alive before visitors’ eyes. AR glasses offer a special experience by allowing visitors to enjoy relics through voice orders and sight recognition. Additionally, an advanced intelligent lighting system helps display relics more clearly and vividly.
Liu Yanchang, the curator (馆长) of the Shandong Museum, said “In the future, more and more people will take visiting museums as a kind of habit and lifestyle.” On how to better meet museumgoers’ needs, Sun Mingli, deputy curator of the Suzhou Museum, says that popular museums may consider using hourly booking systems or hosting “cloud exhibitions” to improve visitor experience.

However, if ecigarettes are so safe, why has the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) seen an increase in telephone calls about ecigarette poisonings?
The answer is children. Most of the calls are from people worried about children who have played with the devices. In the period of one month this year, the Center said 215 people called the Center with ecigarette concerns. More than half of these calls were for children aged five and younger. The devices had made them sick.
Tim McAfee is director of the Center's Office on Smoking and Health. He says the problem is regulation, meaning the U.S government does not control ecigarettes even though they contain liquid nicotine. Mr. McAfee adds that liquid nicotine is a wellknown danger. Mr. McAfee explains that nicotine poisoning happens when it gets into the skin, gets into the eyes or is swallowed. It can cause stomach pain or a sense of unbalance. And too much nicotine can kill.
Tim McAfee says ecigarettes do not create the level of risk to people that tobacco products do. He notes that almost 500,000 Americans die each year from cigarettes. “So, cigarettes are the winner in that contest.” Ecigarettes do not contain hundreds of harmful chemicals that are found in real cigarettes. So, the U. S. Surgeon General Boris D. Lushniak has suggested that ecigarettes may be a useful tool for adults trying to end their tobacco use.
But McAfee worries that teenagers may think electronic cigarettes are harmless. They could become addicted to the nicotine and then start smoking real cigarettes. In other words, he fears that for young people fake ecigarettes could be a “gateway” to the real thing.
1. What do the producers think of ecigarettes?A.Dangerous. | B.Expensive. | C.Safer. | D.Cheaper. |
A.Parents feared that their children might get poisoned. |

To address this and other problems during COVID-19, some cities are turning to programs called microtransit (微交通). They operate like Uber, but the technology companies create the digital routing and ride-hailing (叫车) platforms for transport agencies. According to Jerome Mavaud, lead data was scientist with microtransit company Spare Labs, cities can use the platforms with public transport to meet individual needs and to offer rides that can be more affordable than merely private operations. “Imagine Uber and a city bus had a baby,” Mayaud says.
Since the start of the COVID-19, cities have turned to microtransit to offer vital rides, like moving seniors or nurses to hospitals. Supporters of microtransit say the technology behind these apps could be used to combat COVID-19 in other ways. For instance, the apps could help track the spread of the disease and warm rider if they shared a ride with someone who later tested positive a tool called sold contact tracing (跟踪). Another tool to reduce the spread of the disease is developed within the platforms themselves. Cities can set a rider maximum per trip — informing drivers not to pick up any more than that set number — functionally enforcing social distance on the rides.
Experts are mixed on the proposals. Some say contact tracing disturbs privacy (隐私). Others say microtransit could play a useful role as city streets begin to return to normal. It could replace some fixed-route transport route in the future. Further, one of microtransit’s biggest strengths, normally, is getting people to and from bus and train stations, making it easier for people to use traditional public transport. It could also be used in rural areas with infrequent public transport service and large distances between stops.

Being from the UK, Christmas for me means spending time with family and friends, exchanging presents, eating and drinking, and, of course, hiding from the cold. In Colombia, however, Christmas is viewed much more as a time which devotes itself to religion.
With celebrations beginning on 7 December, Columbia is recognized as having the longest Christmas celebrations period in the world. The celebrations generally begin in the evening with the lighting of candles, either in the streets, parks or outside people’s homes. Cities are lit up by candles, as this day marks the beginning of the Christmas period. Although decorations have been up since early November, another tradition in Colombia is that during the nine days before Christmas, family members and friends meet up to pray, sing songs and share traditional foods at home.
Probably the biggest surprise for me has been the music people listen to during the Christmas period. At first, you could easily mistake these songs for the classic salsa, which is played all year round. However, after asking a Colombian if it really felt like Christmas music, they explained to me that the songs are loved more for the memories they symbolize than for the way they sound, and that Colombia has been through so many dark periods in history, it was important to hold on to the good memories of years gone past.
Being in a country like Colombia during this festive period has taught me that you don’t need to be religious to take part in these Christmas traditions.
