Early in the morning, Abbie, a cleaner, got out of her truck and loaded all the rubbish into her vehicle. She was about to leave when she noticed a stroller (婴儿车) in the middle of the road.

Wondering why a stroller was lying there with nobody around, she decided to approach it. When she looked inside, she jumped back, surprised to find’ twin baby girls sleeping in it.’ Abbie looked around again but didn’t see anyone. She knocked on a few nearby doors, asking if they knew anyone with twin baby girls, but no one did.

Finally, Abbie called the police and the CPS (儿童保护服务局) was called in, and the kids were placed in their care. “You didn’t find anything on the girls, ma’am?” Officer Barton whose wife was an art teacher asked. “No, ” she said. “But how can someone just give up such beautiful babies?” The officer said, “Thank you, ma’am. We’ll let you know if we come across anything.”

Abbie lived alone and had no children. That night at home, she felt terrible when she thought about the girls. What if something terrible happened to them?

Time flew by, and there was no information about the twins’ parents. Abbie was ready to adopt (收养) them. But when she got to the CPS, Barton told her, “So sorry that they’re deaf. People don’t want disabled children.”

“Who said that?” Abbie shouted, jumping to her feet. “ I will do anything to bring them up!” Hearing this, Barton felt moved.

Abbie named the girls Hannah and Daina. She didn’t even have separate beds for the girls, but Abbie loved them and began working two jobs to support them. Abbie was very happy that Hannah and Daina studied hard at school, and they were good at drawing models and clothes.

Mo was waiting outside her class. She was feeling sick. She had two exams that day. Physics was first and she hated physics, it was her worst subject. Terry looked back at her from the front of the line, then looked away quickly. Mo thought she looked guilty. She didn’t have a problem with physics. She didn’t have a problem with anything!

“Hi, Mo, it’s your favourite exam today!” said Nima as she arrived. Terry looked back again. “What’s wrong with her?” said Nima. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Mo. “But she looks absent-minded and acts strangely these days. She promised to help me revise for the physics exam, but then she ignored all my calls and texts!” said Mo angrily while going into the exam room.

Mo couldn’t answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting in the next row. Mo was surprised. Terry was holding her phone under the table and she was reading from it. Is that how Terry always got good grades? She felt really angry at Terry and thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her? It wasn’t fair! Mo never cheated and she failed lots of exams. Terry had already put her phone away when Mo looked up again. She looked back at Mo and smiled sadly. “Stop writing and put your pens down” said Mr Reed as he started to collect the exam papers. Oh no, Mo hadn’t answered two of the questions. She was going to fail again!

The next exam was history. That was Mo’s favourite subject but she didn’t feel good. “It wasn’t fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all that time. And I thought we were friends!” Just then, Mr Reed walked past her table. “Mr Reed...”

Mo was sitting behind Terry again in the history exam, but Terry didn’t take her phone out. Mo was feeling bad again. Why did she tell Mr Reed? But it was too late now. He wanted her to look at him and nod if she saw that Terry had her phone in the exam. She was on the last question when she saw that Terry had her phone under the table. Without thinking, Mo looked up and nodded to Mr Reed.

It was a cold winter. My husband broke up with me. Our 35 years of marriage ended. Shocked, angry, sad and anxious, I packed up my few things, including flower seeds harvested from our flower bed — I loved flowers and was quite good at growing them. Carrying the personal belongings, I rented a small house and moved to a neighborhood where I didn’t know a single person.

The day after I moved in came proof that at least one of my new neighbors was friendly. I found a gift bag beside my back door. Inside were a square basket (designed for feeding wild birds) and three cakes. The note that accompanied it said, “I’m Julie. I live in the house right behind yours. I don’t know if you’re a birdwatcher, but we have lots of them in this neighborhood. Enjoy!”

I hung the basket on a tree branch outside my kitchen window, where some beautiful wild birds found it within minutes. Suddenly, I felt a little less lost and lonely. That was, until the very next day, when an unexpected winter storm came in. Ice and snow covered my driveway and the steep (陡峭的) road in front of my house. Tree branches bent under the weight of the snow, threatening power lines. Temperatures dropped sharply. Although I knew that pacing the floor and rubbing my hands wouldn’t change anything, I paced and rubbed anyway. Even if workers from the local traffic department cleared the roads, they wouldn’t clear my driveway. How would I get to the grocery store? And if the electricity went out, how would I stay warm? I had a fireplace but not a stick of firewood.

The snow finally stopped falling, but the temperature was still low. While shaking in my front yard one afternoon, I noticed my across-the-street neighbor clearing his driveway using his shovel (铲子). I introduced myself and learned that his name was Jerry. “I don’t have a snow shovel,” I said. “May I borrow yours when you’re finished?”

“Of course,” he told me. “I’ll leave it beside your front door when I’m done.”

It was Christmas Eve morning, and I awoke with a mission: to find my lost cat, Baby-Girl. As I got ready, I could hear icy rain pelting the windows. Baby-Girl was out there somewhere in the storm; I could just feel it. Sure, it had been a couple of weeks since she’d gone missing, but I still had faith. This was the season for miracles, after all.

About two weeks ago, my sweet kitty disappeared from my parents’ house in my hometown. Baby-Gil had been staying with them while I was between apartments. At the time, I lived and worked in another city. I was staying with friends until I rented my own house. Baby-Girl had gotten out of my parents’ house the day before I was set to drive back home to pick her up.

My dad and I had spent that entire visit searching for her. Dad was a “realist”, which meant he spent a whole lot of time trying to prepare me for the worst. “She’s either been hit by a car or been taken in by someone who found her,” he said. I rolled my eyes. He could do with a little more faith!

Besides, though I couldn’t explain it, I knew I’d see Baby-Girl again. She could survive all on her own. If any cat could do the impossible, it was my Baby-Girl. Even after I returned to my house without her, deep down I had this undeniable feeling that we would be reunited one day.

Now, home again for the holidays, I was determined to pick up my search right where I’d left off. I grabbed Baby-Girl’s cat carrier and loaded it into the car, and then asked my dad to drive me to the shelter.

At the shelter, a staff member took us to see the cats. We walked through rows of cages. My eyes scanned cats of all colors and sizes. None of them was my Baby-Girl. Then I noticed a room farther back. I pushed ahead. “Sweetheart, that’s where they keep the cats that just came in,” Dad said. “Your cat wouldn’t be in there.”
