Global Natural History Day (GNHD)—youth science knowledge competition—-took place in Shanghai in March, 2023, in an effort to provide a platform     1     school students to learn more about natural science.

GNHD     2    (start) by Kenneth Behring in 2012 in China. It is an international education program intended     3    (inspire) students’ interest in natural history and science and engage them to get outdoors and explore their environment. It is based in Shanghai,     4     world-famous economic and financial center.     5    (support) by local museums and natural science organizations, these science knowledge competitions have been continuously held for 12 years, attracting 60, 000 teams     6     involving millions of students and teachers. In this program, students will develop problem-solving abilities, and     7    (deep) cross-cultural understanding. More importantly, they also explore     8     the future state of the natural world will be like.

In the past decade, GNHD     9    (add) popular science painting, story broadcasting and science exhibition to further arouse students’ interest in natural science learning. Under 2023’s main theme “Seeing small things——Nature’s small perspective and big vision”, natural science     10    (talent) from around the world presented their achievements in exhibitions, science paintings and storytelling.

Li Hang had an experience that lit up his life. The PhD graduate from Wuhan University saw the light in the South Pole, he aurora australis (南极光) “I was amazed” It seemed to move like a swimming whale. But it comforted me     1    (emotion), relieving my     2     (lonely) and dullness. I thought it was a gift from heaven.” He photographed the natural phenomenon. Colorful lights     3    (produce) when the outer sphere of the atmosphere is disturbed by solar wind. He has more than 100,000 photos of the scenes     4     he witnessed during the approximately 500 days he spent at the bottom of the world.

Li was not     5     a pleasure trip. He was working hard as part of China's 31^st and 32^nd polar expeditions to the South Pole. In his spare time, Li took pictures to pass the time.＂Standing under the aurora, I was shocked by the power of nature. We left our motherland and family,     6    we could see amazing views. The scene touched my heart deeply and only     7    (see) it with your own eyes can make you feel the same way.

According to Li, his experience in the South Pole enabled him     8    (feel) nature. “When you   see the stars and auroras in the night sky, you have a feeling that universe     9    (talk) to you. The South Pole shaped me and     10    has become more than the name of a place for me. It is a distant home."

A team of over 30 Chinese surveyors left the base camp at Mount Qomolangma for a higher spot    1    its journey to the peak Wednesday as part of the country’s mission to remeasure the height of the world's highest mountain.

China has started a campaign to measure the height of Mount Qomolangma ,    2    is known in the West as Mount Everest. The remeasurement of the peak’s height is a part of China’s latest large-scale comprehensive    3    (science) survey of Qomolangma, and the 1st Gendetic Surveying Brigade under the Ministry of Natural Resources and the China Mountaineering Team are the parties carrying out the project    4    (collective).

Preparation of the project    5    (launch) in early March, with 53 surveyors from the 1st Geodetic Surveying Brigade getting    6    ( station) near Qomolangma to carry out adaptive climbing and training in other technical    7    (skill), and they are going to the survey on the summit of the mountain.

    8    (ensure) the accuracy of the measurement, and-to work it in    9    more effective way, experts were invited to assist in the technical design and planning of the project from the beginning. The technical innovation and breakthrough applied in the latest survey include the    10    (apply) of the BeiDou-3 Navigation Satellite System and advanced domestic surveying and mapping instruments.
