During the final term of my theater and performance degree at the University of Leeds, I found myself standing outside Berkeley Court care home with three classmates and an underdeveloped idea. We planned to hold some interactive workshops with the residents to try to inspire memory and social engagement.
I remember being nervous, aware that we were working with people who were vulnerable, and that I had no idea what I was doing. Some residents were almost nonverbal, some were clearly not with ability. Some were happy to see us, and some were not.
I had decided to play music at the end of the session. We went with the song My Way because the residents, all roughly 80 years old, were probably listening to the hit song in their late 20s.
Once I pressed play, it was as if a spell had been cast. Nearly everyone in the room stood up and sang what seemed like every word. I was so profoundly moved. Many of them were communicating much better. It looked and felt like magic.
Off I went to drama school, but I thought about that experience almost daily. So when we were given the opportunity to write a script for a theater festival, I created a love story about music and dementia (痴呆), spanning 50 years of a couple’s life.
And now, 10 years later, the show I made is running again in London thanks to the Music for Dementia campaign.
When my grandma was diagnosed with dementia toward the end of her life, I didn’t struggle to communicate with her in the way that other people in their might have done. I felt more able to tune into what she needed and better equipped to see her underneath the disease.
I now know that music-based intervention reduce the need for medication in more than 60% of people living with dementia. I don’t know what My Way would be, but I certainly think we should all strive to find our song and do our best to stay connected to the people we share it with.

The 13-song album tells the story of the shepherd (牧羊人) boy who defeated a giant with five stones and a slingshot and became a king. The idea of the record came after Gifford and her husband Frank went on a life-changing trip to the Holy Land in 2012.
Gifford hoped to shine light on David's story to help a new generation find their own purpose; it's why she decided to compose this album that invites kids to hear the tale of the shepherd in a fun and educational way. Gifford based the record's opening track What is Your Stone on bravery and faith. She hopes the songs can help children find confidence in themselves.
Though the album is aimed towards families and children, Gifford found recording the story of David to be an exercise in healing after the death of her beloved husband Frank who passed away two years ago.
"I catch myself saying that I lost him sometimes," Gifford says, "No, he hasn't been gone. The trip took root in my husband's life, because he truly came to understand exactly what David did."
Gifford says the trip and the teachings stayed with her husband until his death. For the next three years, when people came to visit us, they’d always see Frank's trophy (奖杯) room because it's like a museum," Gifford explained. "He would take them over. Instead of all of his trophies, he would point to the stones we brought back from the travelling destination and talk about them. "
Gifford expects her own journey, her new album and her commitment to bringing a bit of joy to people through her show can help inspire children to discover their own faith and purpose.

The owner of a house in Sonoma County, California called pest (害虫) control when they spotted worms coming from one of their bedroom walls. Those worms turned out to be meal worms, feeding on an unbelievable amount of acorns (橡树子), believed to be collected by a pair of woodpeckers.
“It was really strange. I had never really seen worms with acorns before,” Castro from the pest control said. But the strangeness was just beginning.
After making a small 4-inch-square hole in the wall, Castro said the acorns began spilling out. That alone wouldn’t be terribly unusual, but they “just kept coming,” he said.
“It was very unbelievable to see the amount,” said Castro. He guesses there were at least 700 pounds of acorns, likely collected over the past two to five years.
Often woodpeckers store acorns on the outside of homes, but hardly do they get them inside. In this case, Castro discovered the birds dropped their treasures through a hole in the chimney and entered the attic through a separate hole to eat.
As they dropped from the attic, tens of thousands of acorns gathered from several nearby oak trees filled the hole of the walls, Castro explained.
But this odd find took unusual to a whole new level for the man who has been working in the pest control industry for more than 20 years.
“On a scale from 1 to 10, this is a 10. It’s a one in a million chance to find something this unusual,” said Castro. “I expected to find a few handfuls, nothing like this.”
It took creating another three holes in the home’s walls to remove all the acorns, which piled and reached about 20 feet high, Castro believed.
Castro and his crew of three spent a full day collecting the nuts.
“We filled eight big black garbage bags. They were so heavy we could hardly pick them up,” said Castro. “They had to have weighed at least a hundred pounds each.”
The acorns were thrown away as they were covered in droppings and bits of fiberglass from the wall’s insulation.

He hates that one of the biggest diamonds in the world, found in India over 1,000 years ago, now sits in the queen’s set of crown jewels.
How does my 6-year-old son know all about this? Well, because we talk about it and have a lot of books at home. And now that we have more flexible schedules since we have to work at home- and the kid has to do school at home--- we have even more time together. He is naturally attracted by the books with characters that look like him.
As a scholar of multicultural education, I know that children are able to understand complex issues, like racism, if they are broken down and explained in a way that they can grasp. So, when books talk about subjects like racism, slavery, or colonialism(殖民主义), my wife and I explain those terms as best as we can.
The-coronavirus pandemic (全球性流行病) has brought on a lot of hardship and heartache to families everywhere, and it has also made it easier for parents like us to spend more time with our children. As parents of color, we have an opportunity to offer counter-stories that focus on people who look like us, instead of having our children forced to learn from narratives and stories written from a European or white angle.
Schooling at home provides a unique chance for children of color to build up their knowledge of their histories and larger struggles for social and racial justice locally and globally. Perhaps this moment can be an opportunity, a place of possibility within the overwhelming task of parenting during the pandemic.

“Isn’t it fun that we get to be roommates?” she asked exeitedly.
However, things didn’t turn out that way. It was time to sleep. I intended to turn off the big light and could just use my mini booklight to read.
“Wait!” said Indi. “I can’t fall asleep with any light on and without listening to The Adventure of Jeremy Owl.” “I don’t want to listen to anything,” I said. “I want to read.” “I promise you’ll change your mind when you hearit. Jeremy has an upside-down party, and you’ll never guess what happens. Indi presssed the play button on her CD player.
I had no way but to tolerate (忍受) it. That night, between the fan, Jeremy Owl’s upside-down-adventure and-Indi’s surprisirgly-loud snoring (鼾声), I had an extremely hard time concentrating on my book and an even harder time falling asleep.
Sharing a room doesn’t get any easier during the day. My things kept getting mixed up, covered and lost.
That night, we had a family meeting to come up with some solutions.“How about we just move to a big house with lots of bedrooms?” my little brother, Tex, suggested.“It could have a swimming pool and a basketball court,” “If we had a few million dollars lying around, that would be a fantastic idea,” said my dad, laughing.
But how could we solve our problem? Dad said we both need to be considerate of others and show each other mutual (互相的) respect. No mini booklight. No bedtime stories. And nobody is allowed to touch the other person’s things.
Finally, we both get some privacy and we become happy roommates.
