“Mum! Dad! My CAIE result’s out,”exclaimed Hala, sitting in front of her laptop on her study table. Her mother ran from the kitchen and moved closer to Hala, and her father sprang from the sofa.

Smiling ear to ear, Hala finally broke the dreadful silence,“I got A*in biology, physics, additional mathematics and chemistry. The rest are As.” Her father kissed Hala’s forehead and had stars in his eyes when he said,“Once again, my daughter has made me immensely proud.”“A*in biology? Then set to be a doctor and walk in our footsteps, huh?” said her mother who was an excellent cardiologist.

On hearing it, Hala didn’t seem as cheery as she had been when she had announced her results.

Soon, Hala’s elder sister came from her medical college and was excited by this news. She rushed straight to Hala’s room and congratulated her. “Bajjo, do you expect me to be a doctor as well?”There was a short silence after which Bajjo replied,“Well, don’t you want to be? When you were little, all you could think about was being a doctor, like father.”

“I want to become a pilot, Bajjo!I want to see the world from above. I want to go out in the world and see how it’s like,” Hala replied with persistence. Hala went over to the window and watched the clouds as though imagining herself flying through the clouds already.“Girls can be pilots. Someday, you’ll see me flying outside in the aeroplane, dancing with the clouds.” Hala pointed to the sky.

“Okay,” Bajjo sighed clearly from the exhaustion of the university, but also from the thought of the upcoming drama in the house.

John Limon stood on the steps of the summer house, watching his wife climb into the car and drive off. She was going to the village to get some boxes. He looked unhappy. He'd done little work on his book and summer was now gone.

“A wasted summer, ” he had said to his wife.

“Not wasted, John, ” she'd said gently. “It has been good for all of us.”

“But not good for my work,” he'd answered bitterly.

He remembered his unfinished book and he asked Joanna hopefully, “Isn't there something else you would like to do instead” up her face and said with an unhappy look, “Do we have to go home tomorrow, Daddy?”

“Yes,” he answered. “School begins Monday, you know.”

She sighed. She looked small in her swimming suit. As his old dog Bingo, came up and pushed against his hand, he thought about a number of things, that he'd had his dog longer than his child, who was almost nine, and he remembered that Bingo had been his dog even before he met his wife Doris. She'd been eighteen then and was now twenty—nine. For eleven years, she had tried to be as old as himself and he had tried to be as young as she. Now in anger he wondered if their love was worth the years of trying and so often failing.

The child said “Daddy, I can't think of anything else I would rather do than go sailing”

This made him more angry. He was a poor sailor and had already upset the boat once. His wife was probably right, he thought. She said he was always thinking so much about his book that he let the wind and the boat get the better of him.

And so, after he agreed to take out the boat, it happened again today. He was so troubled with the loss of time that he let a gust of wind turn his light boat over. He went under and was terrified, not because of his own safety, but that of the child.

A few years ago, at a clinic, an elderly woman sat on a waiting room chair belting out (引吭高歌) the Celine Dion tune “My Heart Will Go On.” Her sweet, high-pitched voice exploded into every corner of the clinic. I had fun watching how people reacted. There was a lot of shifting in scats and a couple of stony sideways stares, but mainly they awkwardly averted (转移) their eyes and tried to pretend that there was nothing special happening.

I was at the clinic with my dad, who was getting a routine blood test, when the woman first arrived. She settled into the seat directly across from my dad. Because she was so tiny, she was forced to sit on the edge of the chair so her feet could touch the floor. The position made it seem as though she was sitting forward to engage in conversation with my dad. She smiled at him and he smiled back.

I was concerned about how my dad would react to the invasion on his space. He was 77 years old at the time and had been living with Alzheimer (老年痴呆症) for several years. Alzheimer would damage a person’s patience and restraint. Since his diagnosis, privacy and personal space had definitely been his thing, and he had considered it wholly bad mannered to bring undo attention to oneself. Moreover, he had begun to abandon any effort to nod politely or insert a smile in appropriate places. I couldn't help but think that this melodic woman was playing with fire.

Her singing began gently, like a quiet hum. I glanced over at Dad to see his response. His smile was gone, and he was staring right at her. She was staring back. I couldn't read his expression initially, but it seemed to be something like confusion.

By the time the woman got to the chorus, “Near, far, wherever you are...” it was full-tilt belting. She was motionless, with her eyes shut and her arms crossed elegantly over her chest.

There was a rich couple who was throwing a big new year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and fixed price. They wanted to maintain their high living standard so they didn’t mind paying a lot for it. After purchasing everything they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were torn and he looked as if he wasn’t even able to meet his daily needs.

They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods at their home. The old porter quoted just a $20, a price well below the market rate for delivering goods at couple’s home in his cart. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal so he needed anything he could earn.

The couple was very happy thinking how well they bargained with the poor porter and paid him $15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn’t delivered their stuff.

The wife started to get angry at her husband, “I always tell you not to trust such person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure instead of delivering at our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then to the police station to file the complaint against him.”

They both left towards the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their stuff in his cart!
