We were three thousand miles away from home on a Random Acts of Kindness and Volunteerism Road Trip. Our funds were running low, so we had two goals today. Firstly, try out our new “Smile!” signs and see how much kindness and joy we could spread. Secondly, raise a pitiful $20 a piece by doing street performances. Singing, drawing cartoons, storytelling, as long as it is enough for the trip to Portland.
We weren’t sure how people would react to our signs. I nervously raised one up and shouted “Hi there!” to a young couple. They looked over, momently confused, then read my sign and broke into smiles. It worked.
Before long, our signs were popular. Strangers stopped to ask us about them. The signs are more than an invitation to “Smile!”. They’re an excuse to connect with strangers and to remember this world is full of good people. We got so wrapped up in our “Smile!” project that we forgot our other goal. Before we knew it, the sun was setting, and we had no money for our trip to Portland.
Then we noticed that a blind musician was playing guitar when suddenly a passing crowd kicked over his change jar. Change and cash scattered everywhere. Before we could run over, another man rushed to collect all the money for him. And we met the dogooder, Jared. “We want to praise you on your good deed,” I said. Jared looked at my signs curiously. We told him about our road trip, which reminded him of something similar he did when he was young. He seemed moved.

Writer and philosopher Johana Wolfgang von Goethe said, “Kindness is the golden chain by which society is bound together.” But I was not thinking about the golden chain of kindness one day when a very old and broken-down automobile parked in front of my house. During those years, we lived in a small town just across the street from the church I served, and travelers in need constantly found their way to my house.
I was growing bored with helping the numerous people who stopped by almost every day. I was frequently awakened in the middle of an otherwise good night’s sleep to get out in the cold and help someone passing through. Once our property was damaged on purpose; once I drove through storm in order to get two people to safety; many times I felt taken for granted by penniless motorists or hitchhikers who did not thank me for the help they received and some even complained that I could have done more. I had lost my faith in the basic goodness of others for a while and, though I still offered assistance, sometimes I inwardly (内心) wished they could just go away.
But one day, a young man with a week-old beard (胡须) climbed from the broken-down car. He had no money and no food. He asked if I could give him some work and then offer him some petrol and a meal. I told him that if he wanted to work for me, he could cut the grass, but actually the work wasn’t necessary.
Though sweaty and hungry, he worked hard. Because of the afternoon heat, I expected him to give up before the job was completed. But he continued and, and after a long while, he sat tiredly down in the shade. I thanked him for his work and gave him what he needed. When I offered him a little extra money for a task which was particularly well done, he didn’t accept it.

Triiiiiingggggggggggg, the bell rang. Suddenly my heart was raising and fear rose within me. I was nervous as I started to feel sick, really sick. I ran to the bathroom and washed my face with water. I felt my heart pound against my chest, hard and loud as I looked into the mirror and whispered “Come on, you can do this.”
Some were looking forward to this moment for ages; but not me. I felt frightened every time I imagine how uncomfortable it would be on a stage, and being the center of attention. If it was a speech, I could manage, but repeating a scene from a movie that has already been done by professional actors is simply hard because we get compared to them. But there was no choice.
As I made it to the assembly hall, I went over the script in my head. Suddenly I tensed as I couldn’t remember all the lines. Once I was there in the assembly hall, my brain literally stopped working because of all the noise and the tension in the air.
As soon as the teachers who were supposed to judge our performance entered, the crowd quieted down and the performances began. I was really nervous until the first performer was called, because I was really tired of being the first in everything as my name is the first in the register. But the more I waited, the more tired I got of waiting. There came a point where I, who once was feeling sick and scared of performing, wanted to go on stage and get my performance done. That’s when I found out that I was arranged to perform the next day. I was quite happy because maybe that would give me some more time to practice and improve the weaknesses that I saw in others.
The bubble burst when the teacher asked us to perform that day. My heart beat raced and as I walked on to the stage, I was shaking. When I got up along with my friend, I had a good look around. There were 50-60 people, which weren’t much. Then I felt really stupid for being scared of having an audience.

Three years ago I was arranged to work for a few weeks as a dentist (牙医) in a new dental clinic (诊所) at Victor Harbor, to the south of Adelaide and an hour further away than my usual workplace. My first day there was rush driving to a new and unfamiliar clinic and getting accustomed to (习惯于) the different rules and clinical environment.
In my worry and anxiety, and feeling a little unfamiliar in the new setting, I removed (取下) my three rings (戒指): my wedding ring, a ring that belonged to my mother and one that was an anniversary gift from my husband. I wrapped (包裹) them in a tissue (纸巾) and placed them beside my computer.
During my lunch break, I noticed the wrinkled (皱的) tissue and thought that it did not look very neat and dropped it into the rubbish bin. Driving home at the end of the day, just moments before I reached my house, I noticed that I had lost my rings. I felt the heat in my body rose, my cheeks burning red. I went inside and tried to calm down. I felt sick to my stomach and I had that sinking feeling in my heart. I spent an hour or so making calls, trying to follow the track (轨迹) of my rings. The first people I called were my manager and clinical leader and they gave me a few contact numbers for cleaners. I got in touch with a lady who managed the cleaning services for the clinic, and she informed me that the bins had already been collected.
Heartbroken, I knew nothing could be done now. I had lost my rings. If it had not been for my carelessness, all this would not have happened. With great sorrow and regret, I just sat there rooted in my chair.
