In Japan, Chen Jianyi was a household name. He devoted his life to cooking and adapting the hot and spicy Chinese dish for Japanese     1     (customer). His career and life even inspired a Japanese artist     2     (create) Cooking Master Boy, a household cartoon     3     became a common childhood memory among the Japanese born in the 1980s and 1990s.

In 1952, Chen’s father moved to Japan. 6 years     4     (late), he opened the first Sichuan cuisine restaurant in Tokyo. Then he set up an “Institute of Chinese Cuisine”     5     the help of his wife. It has trained 15,000 chefs, making a great     6     (contribute) to the spread of Chinese food in Japan.

In 1990, Chen took over the Sichuan restaurant at     7     age of 34 after his father’s death. He improved their family’s signature dish (招牌菜) even further to give it a “spicy and     8     (slight) sweet taste.” In a cooking competition in 1993, he broke a record and     9     (claim) the title of “First Chef of Chinese Food” in Japan.

Sadly, chef Chen passed away in March, 2023. The news of his death made media headlines in Japan. It shows just how much the Japanese love the dish he cooked and Chinese cuisine, and how food culture has played an important role in promoting communication and     10     (culture) exchanges.

After cycling 2,000 kilometers in 18 days, Lan Huiyun and his 13 students finally reached their destination — Qinghai Lake in Qinghai province on August 17.

Lan, 35,     1     geography teacher from Shanxi province, started out with his students on July 30, several days after they     2     (admit) into different universities. They set off from their campus and passed through the province Shanxi, Shaanxi, the Inner Mongolia and Gansu before arriving in Qinghai.

In early May, Lan began to plan a bicycle route     3     would allow the students to receive firsthand experience about local plants, climate and customs. He also provided training,     4     (include) bicycle operation, repairing skills and some basic first aid, to ensure their     5     (safe) and reduce the possibility of accidents. However, they encountered difficulties, such as flat tires and lack     6     oxygen, while cycling in high altitude regions.     7     (fortunate), all of them persisted and finally reached the destination.

It was not the first time that Lan     8     (organize) such journeys to commemorate (纪念) the end of high school. Although it costs time and energy     9     (arrange) such activities, he will continue to bring     10     (many) students to cycle outside in the future because cycling can broaden their horizons.

If you have ever watched the Miss America competition, you must have seen that the young ladies wear tight swimming costumes     1     (show) off their shapes, or sing popular songs to reveal their beautiful voices in the talent show.

However, Virginia Camille Schrier,     2    was crowned Miss America 2020, was different. Dressed in a lab coat, the 24-year-old girl    3    (perform) an “elephant’s toothpaste” science experiment. She created an explosion by     4     (combine)hydrogen peroxide(过氧化氢) with potassiumiodide (碘化钾) in the talent show.

“    5    a student of medicine, I am raising social awareness about everyday drug     6     (safe)and abuse prevention,” Schrier told CNN. Meanwhile, her unconventional performance     7     (immediate) made headlines around the United States.

Many people think that Schrier breaks the     8     (fix) impression of Miss America.     9     (like) the other young women, Schrier presents    10     (her) as charming ,knowledgeable and confident, instead of just a pretty face.
