According to Science Daily, the Arctic, the only natural habitat for polar bears, is in danger. Sea ice in the area could disappear    1    (complete) by 2035. This is undoubtedly bad news for the animal, as they use the floating sea ice to hunt.

Scientist made this    2    (predict) by using the UK Met Office’s Hadley Center climate model. This model allowed researchers    3    (compare) Arctic sea ice conditions during the last interglacial period-the warm period that     4    (occur) around 127, 000 years ago-to present day conditions. Researchers found during the last interglacial period many shallow pools of water formed on the surface of the Arctic sea ice. These pools     5    (know) as melt ponds, played a crucial role in the melting of the sea ice. This is because if there are larger areas of melt ponds, more heat    6    (absorb) by sea ice, which causes it to melt further.

In the last interglacial period, the Arctic sea ice actually disappeared. This is a    7    (frighten) thought for scientists     8    see the pattern repeating. “If what is happening to the Arctic right now is anything like the last interglacial period, there is     9    chance that it could be virtually free of sea ice in only 15 years,” the researchers said.

In addition     10    the potential extinction of some animal species, the melting of sea ice could cause devastating natural disasters.

Worse still, it     3     (threat) human lives and causes many species to die out. These conflicts     4     (large) result from humans and wildlife seeking limited resources in the same landscapes and often have many unexpected consequences. As a matter of fact, both extreme climate events and climate change have the potential to influence the interactions between humans and wildlife. Serious climate events can bring about rapid changes in resource availability,     5     may drive strong responses in animals and people. The    6     (compete) between the two grows tougher as a consequence. Droughts     7     particular have caused some of the most visible conflicts. Despite the gravity of these conflicts, climate change is making human-wildlife conflict even     8     (serious). With people and wildlife sharing crowded spaces and limited resources, human-wildlife conflict is rising in frequency. Many people,     9     still haven't really realized how complex and severe the problem is. Therefore,     10     (protect) wildlife and humans alike, it is vital that a wide range of research and institutions should consider the role of a changing climate in shaping the complex dynamics of conflict.

Among the capitals of big economies, Beijing enjoys a surprising distinction.     1     its sometimes unpleasant weather, it hosts more species of birds than any other such city apart from Brasilia. Remarkably, however, birdwatching remains     2     (common).

In many countries, birders play an important role in     3     (spot) changes in bird populations and behaviour. A British enthusiast in Beijing Terry Townshend, has recently set up     4     means of doing so without needing to stand for hours outdoors. It involves a digital listening device     5     (fix) on the roof of a 15-storey building in northern Beijing. For several months until mid-November it recorded the night-time calls of migratory birds flying above. The sounds will be used to identify night-lying species, some of     6     are not commonly seen overhead by day. The technique has been used in America and Europe, but Mr Townshend thinks this is its first known     7     (apply) in Asia. Such devotion is rare among     8     (amateur).

China has little history of birdwatching. Only in the 19th century did the scientific study of birds begin. Birdwatching as a pastime     9     (emerge) only in the past two decades, helped by rising incomes that have allowed people to buy binoculars and cameras. There is a small but growing number of local birders who     10     (close) monitor bird migration and draw public attention to human threats to birds.
