Kindness of Strangers
We rely on a community where helping others is highly appreciated. When we need help, it creates a web that ties us together.
Years ago, I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Cassandra, called me from her room. “Mom, can you help me get downstairs?”She had lung disease and depended on oxygen(氧气) twenty-four hours a day, so it was impossible for her to move up and down the stairs without help. I turned down the stove and ran upstairs to her room. Cassandra let out a sigh and closed her eyes.
“Mom, I wish it wasn’t so hard for me to climb the stairs. “
“I know, honey. We’ll try to solve the problem. “
A month earlier, a company introduced an electric stairlift (座椅电梯). My daughter could use this stairlift to go up and down stairs by herself without anyone helping her. Hearing the perfect product, our whole family was very excited and looking forward to it. The stairlift sounded wonderful because it would greatly improve my daughter’s life. Unluckily, we couldn’t afford it although John, my husband, even took two jobs to support the family.
So I decided to ask the local charity organization for help once again. They had lent us a wheelchair before we bought one. Maybe they could help with a stairlift, too. Gathering all my courage, I dialed the number of the charity organization. “This is Cassandra’s mother. Do you have a stairlift I could borrow?” I asked them hopefully. They hadn’t, but they promised to telephone us right away as soon as they got one. Then began our long wait.

One day before Christmas, Nicole went to a supermarket near her home with her mother, Jessica, and her younger brother, Steven, to buy Christmas presents. She bought a very cute little teddy bear (泰迪熊) and she loved it very much.
It was snowing that day, but it soon stopped. And it started to clear up. So they planned to go for a walk along a local river together. It didn’t take long for Steven to start getting bored. He offered to play with his sister’s toy for a while. Nicole happily gave Steven her beloved teddy bear. As soon as Steven got the toy, he started playing with it. He even threw it into the air to show how strong he was. However, Steven threw the teddy bear into the river accidentally. Seeing what happened, Nicole was very sad, crying out loud.
The toy disappeared with the current. It was very cold, so it was impossible to go down to the river to pick up the teddy bear. Steven just stood there silently. Jessica saw the scene, and she knew she had to comfort Nicole and teach Steven a lesson.
With disappointment and sadness, Nicole walked quickly back home. Minutes later, Steven came up with an idea. He urged his mom to reach out to neighbors to see if anyone might be able to help find the toy. “I don’t want to bother anyone. I don’t think anyone would care,” Jessica said. But Steven convinced her to give it a shot. So she included the news in her personal social media and said, “If anyone happens to see the teddy bear in the river, please help us pick it up. My kids will be grateful.” She uploaded a photo of the teddy bear.
A local search and rescue team saw the news and its captain, Adam, decided to help. As hard as it was to believe, a task to rescue the teddy bear was quickly spreading. After several hours of searching, the toy was successfully located, which made the young owner very happy.

I hurriedly made my way through the busy airport, my mind focusing on the adventure that awaited me at my destination. I had been looking forward to this trip for months and had packed everything I needed for my much-anticipated painting trip. Brushes, canvases(画板), and a column of watercolor paints - my most cherished companions on this creative journey - were carefully placed in my carry-on luggage.
As I approached the security checkpoint, a sense of unease began to settle within me. I couldn’t help thinking that I must have forgotten something. I checked my passport and air ticket. Everything was in their place. Suddenly, my heart skipped a beat, and I realized I had forgotten about the strict rules on liquids in carry-on baggage. I felt a sense of panic as the realization dawned upon me - I would have to part ways with my beloved painting supplies.
Unwillingly, I handed over my paints to the stern-faced (面无表情的) security officer, knowing that they were victims of my carelessness. I felt as if my creative spirit and good mood for the trip had been swept away in a gust of wind. I couldn't help complaining to him about how important those paints were to me and how much I had been looking forward to this trip. The officer’s straight face provided no comfort as he informed me that I could collect my items upon my return in a week.
Days passed as I silently counted the minutes until I would be reunited with my artistic companions. On the day of my long-awaited return, my heart fluttered with nervous anticipation. As I exited the airplane and made my way to the baggage claim area, a familiar face caught my eye. Amongst the sea of strangers, a security officer stood, holding a package that resembled my beloved art supplies. My eyes widened in disbelief, my steps quickening with each step. Could it be possible that he had gone through the trouble of saving my cherished materials? As I reached the security officer, he met my gaze (凝视) with an unexpected smile.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Glancing at the clock on my computer screen, I was excited to see it was finally lunchtime. Getting stuck in traffic during my commute into work had just been the beginning of a stressful morning. so I was more than ready for a break. A big salad topped with grilled chicken was waiting for me just outside the Navy base’s main entrance, plus I would pick up some food for my co-workers.
I parked in one of the few open spots at the restaurant and locked the doors. My keys were left in the car since there was a keypad on the door for keyless entry. As usual, it was crowded inside. The tables were all full. Finally I placed the orders, paid, and was handed my drinks. I decided to fix the drinks and carry them out to the car since it would be a while for the food to be ready.
When I got to my car. I put in the numbers on the door and pulled the handle. It didn’t open. I tried again. It still didn’t unlock. My phone and keys were in there. I was going to have to go back inside and borrow a phone to call work. Then, I noticed the phone in the car was being charged, I wasn’t charging my phone when I left. Then. I saw a magazine on the passenger seat. Not mine. I slowly turned around to discover my car right behind me. Oh. no! I had been trying to break into someone else’s car!
I walked around my car to get to the driver’s side, pushed in my code, and opened my door. I placed the drinks inside and walked back to the restaurant to get the food. As I entered through the door. I heard a man’s voice say, ”They look alike, don’t they?“ I knew that was directed at me.
Turning my head to my left, I saw two men staring back at me with eyes twinkling and huge smiles on their faces.

It was time to go home. “Remember to work on your class speeches for homework,” Miss Walker said as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jenny felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone would get really bored with listening to her. Once, when Jenny was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.
Jenny watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jenny sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee’s watch lying right in the middle of the path.
Jenny picked it up and wanted to return it to Lee, but she couldn’t catch up with him. When she arrived home, Jenny put it on, thinking about the magic. She was surprised that it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. “I’m going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I’ve won lots of competitions. But when I’m in a race, I’m not really thinking about winning. I’m just loving the feeling of being in the water…” Jenny laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the minor, Jenny saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee’s watch really did have something magical.
The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Walker ask cd who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved, Jenny slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Walker could say something, there was a shout “She’s stolen in y watch!” Lee said angrily. “It went missing at school yesterday.”

Lisa checked the words on her spelling test again and again. If she got full marks today, she would win her class’ Spelling Challenge and a prize, a series of books that she had longed for. Plus, Mr. Matt had promised to sing a song in front of the whole class if anyone got a perfect score.
Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly! She erased “-ty” and wrote “-ly” before handing in her paper. Mr. Matt graded the papers while the students were at rest.
After a break, Lisa hurried into the classroom, sitting in her seat nervously-Mr. Matt walked to the front of the room and cleared his throat. “Congratulations, Lisa! You did it!” Then, he kept his promise and began to sing. He sang so well that the whole class erupted!
Mr. Matt presented Lisa with her prize. A big smile spread across Lisa’s face as she read the label on the books: To Lisa, for her perfect score in spelling.
As Lisa burst through the front door afterschool, Mom asked, “Everything OK?”
“Everything’s perfect!” Lisa shouted, showing Mom her spelling test and prize.
Mom hugged her. “Well done, Lisa”
Lisa scooped up(抱起) her cat. “Can you spell nicely, Casper? And quickly and honestly, and...” It suddenly occurred to her that she had misspelled the word. Rooted to the spot, Lisa reflected on how she could tell the whole class she shouldn’t have earned the prize at all. She dashed into her room and pulled out the test paper. “If I put the missing’t’ back in, no one would ever know,” she thought. Recalling the joyful moment, a mixture of guilt and unwillingness overwhelmed her.
