Bessie Curtis was spending a year in the countryside with her uncle and aunt. Early in the spring her uncle had given her a young turkey (火鸡) “There. Bessie.” he said, “that is one of the prettiest turkeys I have ever seen. I will give him into your care, and on Thanksgiving Day we will have the turkey on the dinner-table.”

For some time Bessie fed the turkey every day without feeling particularly fond of him, Very Soon, however, the turkey began to know her: he not only ran to meet her when she brought him his corn (谷物) and meal, but he would follow her about just the way Mary’s little dog did. Her uncle often called after her : “Everywhere Bessie goes, the turkey’s sure to follow as a knight (骑士).” But she was so sad! She remembered her uncle’s words when he gave her the turkey: “On Thanksgiving Day we will have the turkey on the table.”

If Bessie had been like some little girls, she would have told her trouble to her uncle. But she never mentioned it to anyone, although she cried herself to sleep several nights before Thanksgiving Day.

At last the day and the dinner-time came! With a heavy heart, she seated herself at the table. Her uncle and aunt noticed her serious face, and thought that she missed her father and mother. “Come, come,” said her uncle, “we must cheer up; no sad looks on Thanksgiving Day. Maria, BRING IN THE TURKEY.”

Right before Thanksgiving, I prayed, “Lord please make me a blessing to others as Santa”.

A week later as my husband and I were preparing for this year’s Santa visits with my Mrs. Claus basket, we discovered a letter to Santa from a young mother named Mary, who was ill and was asking if there was a Santa and if miracles did happen that her young children would have a good Christmas because she was told by doctors that it could be her last. In it was her name, phone number and address.

I tried to make contact with Mary, but however many times I tried, I had no luck in getting someone to answer the phone. One week before Christmas, I decided to make a call one more time.

This time a woman answered the phone. I discovered that it was Mary’s mother. She first said that no one lived there by the name of Mary. I had two choices: to thank her and hang up or keep trying. I decided to continue and explained that I was Mrs. Claus and that we had found a letter written to Santa by Mary at this telephone number, expressing the desire to help her kids. She was in shock and told me that Mary had had an operation two weeks before.

The mother started crying as we continued talking. In the end, she said she would ask Mary to call me back and we would talk more. The next day, as promised, I received a phone call from Mary. We talked about her children. She gave me their names, ages, and a little about them. I told her that we wanted to fulfill her wishes and make her dream come true this Christmas to help her family. She cried and I did too as we spoke. Before hanging up, she said that she was happy that her children would have a good Christmas.

In the following days, we were busy making preparations. Much to our delight, everything was ready just before the Christmas Eve. We waited eagerly for the daybreak.

Karie double-checked the words on her spelling test. If she got 100 scores today, she’d win her class’s First-Quarter Spelling Challenge and a brand new dictionary. Plus, Ms. McCormack had promised to do a handstand if anyone got a perfect score.

Three more words to go. N-i-c-e-l-y. Q-u-i-c-k-l-y. H-o-n-e-s-t-y. Wait! She’d spelled honesty, not honestly. She hurriedly erased the t-y and wrote l-y before handing in her paper. Ms. McCormack graded the test papers at the break. Meanwhile, Karie sat restlessly in her seat with her fingers crossed. Then, Ms. McCormack walked to the front of the room and cleared her throat. As if she were an Olympic gymnast, Ms. McCormack’s feet flipped (翻动) into the air.

“Congratulations, Karie! You did it!” she announced while upside down.

The whole class burst into applause! Ms. McCormack righted herself and presented Karie with her prize. Karie grinned as she read the label on the box:

To Karie Carter, for her perfect first-quarter score in spelling.

“Everything OK?” Mom asked as Karie burst through the front door after school. Karie didn’t answer. As if by magic, she took out her spelling test paper and prize and showed them to her mother. Mom hugged her, asking her to put the test paper on the fridge so that Dad could see it when he got home.

Karie took another look at the test paper before putting it on the fridge. Her hands stopped in mid-air. She just couldn’t believe her own eyes. Honesly?

YES! H-O-N-E-S-L-Y!

Mom sensed something unusual and asked why. Karie stuffed the test paper into her backpack and explained that she was just too excited. Mom brought her some tea. Yes, a “t” was exactly what she needed.

After drinking a little, Karie plodded (沉重缓慢地走) down the hall, lost in thought. How could she tell the class she hadn’t earned the prize after all? That Ms. McCormack did the handstand for nothing?

Have you ever had to overcome an extreme challenge in your life?

Throughout my rushed teenage years I have been faced with many extreme challenges that have required extreme focus and hard work to overcome. If it hadn’t been for hard work, none of these challenges that I faced would have been conquered.

Two years ago, when I was a freshman in high school, I dealt with an extremely significant injury. It took place in my tennis tournament in January. In the climax of my match, I turned my back to the left and soon after felt a sharp, painful shock run through my spine (脊椎). I knew at that difficult moment I seriously injured my back. I was rushed off the court and my parents made an appointment with an orthopedist (矫形外科医生) for the next day.

I walked into the office extremely nervous and suffering from intense pain. My tennis season for school would start in three months and I absolutely needed to build up the strength.

After about twenty minutes of waiting in the office, which felt like a decade, the doctor walked in to examine my X-rays. With a sorrowful face, the doctor looked into mine and my mother’s eyes and said,“There is a 50/50 chance that Lucas will be able to participate in this year’s tennis season. Lucas broke his L5 spine in his lower back.”My heart dropped and I felt a sadness coming over me. The doctor said that I would be sitting out of physical activity for two and a half to three months.

Those three months were the longest three months of my life. I was so eager to get back to practice for the season. Every day, I would think about how it was going to be when I was fully healthy. I asked myself,“Am I going to be out of shape? Should I even play this year? Probably won’t have a successful season.”

From that terrible day on, I decided that I was going to work hard to be back in top form and have a successful season.

Paragraph 1:

After I got the “all clear” from my orthopedist, I was going to get to work.
