Carl lost his job. He tried to find another one but it wasn’t easy. The poor fellow couldn’t pay his bills because he had so little money, and he couldn’t ask anybody to lend him.

Carl spent his days at home. He looked out of the window and watched his neighbor’s house. An old professor lived there alone. Strangely, he never talked to his neighbors. Carl could see into the professor’s house because he never drew the curtain. The rooms were full of antique (古老的) furniture and vases. Carl thought, “Why haven’t I got an antique vase? I could sell it for a lot of money.”

Every day Carl saw the professor. He left at 10 o’clock. He had a dog. Carl often went to the fence and played with it or give it a piece of meat.

One day Carl thought, “I will go into the professor’s house and steal a vase. I will break the window and climb in, the dog is not a problem.”

There was an old gun in the cellar. It had been his great grandfather’s favorite thing a long time before. Carl didn’t want to use the gun but he thought, “Anything could happen.”

He wanted to hide the gun under his coat but it was too long so he cut the end off with a saw.

The next morning he watched the professor leaving home at 10 o’clock. Carl climbed over the fence. The dog ran to him and Carl gave it a big bone. He threw a piece of stone through the window, which broke. It wasn’t high. He could climb into the house easily.

He looked around inside. There were paintings on the walls, small figures and vases on the shelves and the floor. Carl didn’t know much about arts. He couldn’t choose. He reached his hands towards a big vase when he heard a noise. The front door opened and someone entered the house.

I was a writer, but yesterday the boss told me he decided to fire me. That was wrong, because I created many great articles for our company. I didn't want to let the news upset my children, so I invited my wife to a restaurant we often went to.

I walked into the restaurant, surprised by how empty it was. Not too long after, I saw Carrie walk in. “Where are the kids?” I asked. "At Mother's." Carrie said. "So what did you want to tell me?" she asked curiously. "Well when I tell you, you can't break down." I said. She nodded hesitantly.

“Well, ... my boss said ...he would fire me if I couldn't come up with a good story.” "What! You've been working there for 5 years since your best friend Jack left there. Although later Jack tried to invite you to work with him, you refused. You could basically run the place!” She shouted. "I know, I know.” "How can he just fire you like Jack?” She looked at me with worry in her eyes. "What about the kids? How will we pay for the house? How will we ..." I cut her words off and promised. "I'll find a new job. Any job will do as long as it pays." Suddenly a man across the diner said, "My friend is looking for a new writer ... someone that can really tell and show the story.” "Where can I find him?” I asked. "He's got a shop down the street with a big yellow sign on the top." he says. "Thank you so much!" Carrie said thankfully as we left the restaurant.

“There!” Carrie pointed to a big yellow sign reading, "The Daily Dispatch". "I've heard about this place!” I said turning to Carrie. t4This is the worst newspaper company here!” I complained. “Well I guess I should go in for an interview. A bad job is better than none." I sighed. "George, I don't want you to do something you hate." “Well at least I can make some money if I have a job."   said.

Colin, a young boy with autism (自闭症), has a special love for card tricks. These aren’t just any tricks; theyre just his way of dealing with a world that can often be stressful. Cards, in Colin’s hands, become more than pieces of paper; they are instruments of focus and bridges to connect with others.

As the family checked into the hotel, little did they know that this would be the setting for a heartwarming story that would touch the hearts of many.

Colin, with a heart full of innocence and curiosity, approached the front desk. Standing behind that desk was Kahlief Hill, a 39-year-old hotel clerk, a kind and warm-hearted man. Colin looked up at him, his eyes bright with excitement, and asked a simple question: “Would you like to see a card trick?”

What Kahlief didn’t know at that moment was the great impact of his response. He didn’t know that Colin had autism, and for Colin, card tricks were more than a hobby. They were his shelter, a way to quiet his mind and keep his hands engaged. Colin had lost his father a few years before, leaving him with a gap where a male figure and role model should be.

His mother didn’t know that Colin had been waiting for a “big brother” for over two years, living with just his mom and sister. And Kahlief didn’t know that he was becoming that male figure Colin longed for.

Despite not knowing any of this, Kahlief’s   response was a simple and warm “yes”. He allowed Colin to take center stage, performing his card tricks with patience and enthusiasm. It wasn’t just about watching; Kahlief also shared some tricks of his own, bringing about a magical exchange of wonder and smiles.

This beautiful connection didn’t end that night. The following evening, when Colin and his family returned to the hotel after dinner, Kahlief was there, manning the front desk once more. And when he saw Colin walking to him, he extended the invitation once again: “Would you like to come and practice more card tricks?”

Out of a 13-year-old girl’s summer boredom, I put up a tent in our yard and intended to sleep in it. It was midnight and my dad had been asleep upstairs. A girl knocked on the front door, asking if she could use our phone to call her parents.

I watched her struggle to dial the numbers. After she dialed the wrong numbers several times, I offered to do that for her. But after I dialed several times, there still no people answered the phone. Looking at the girl, I said, “Want to sleep in my tent?” She hesitated for a while and agreed.

I accompanied her into the darkness of the yard, entered the tent, and turned my lantern on. She told me how she got here. She and her parents had a nice dinner. After dinner, she expressed she wanted a beautiful dress in a special style, but it was too expressive for her parents. They argued fiercely(激烈地)and she left in anger. She wandered alone aimlessly(漫无目的地)until she found herself on an unfamiliar road. Her cellphone was in her parent’s bag and she seemed to have got lost. She wiped her eyes with my pillow, looked at me sadly, and then said, “Why didn’t my parents buy that dress for me?”

I knew just nodding obviously couldn’t solve the problem. “Do you think your parents love you?” I asked. Hearing my questions, she nodded and said regretfully, “My parents always meet my request as far as possible. This is my fault to ask them to buy that dress which they can’t afford. ” At the time, my phone rang. It turned out her parents’ call. Her parents sounded very worried and said they would come very soon. Then, my dad walked down the stairs.
