It was a freezing cold morning in early 2023. I was on my way to work. I’d been training hard for an upcoming marathon, and was limping (跛行) slightly from a pain in my hip. I figured it was nothing serious. But later it turned out to be a hairline stress fracture (应力断裂).

So, when I slipped on the icy New York City sidewalk, I somehow lost my balance and broke my hip. I tried several times to stand up, but failed each time due to the sharp pain. As more and more passers-by gathered around, I felt extremely embarrassed.

Just at that time, a stranger emerged from the crowd and knelt beside me. All I remembered was seeing her kind face, all covered up, with a big hat and scarf. She pushed everyone out of the way and said, “I’ve got this.”

The woman introduced herself as Sharon Evans. As she helped me up, all I could think about was that I needed to get to work. But I was in terrible pain, and could barely stand. Seeing this, Sharon told me to stay put while she called a taxi.

“No, you don’t have to do that. I’m sure you have places to be, please don’t, I can do it,” I said to her. “No, the taxi is arriving anytime,” she replied.

Once the taxi arrived, Sharon supported me into the taxi and went with me. I tried to tell her that it wasn’t necessary. But she was persistent. To be honest, I was secretly relieved to have her company.

When the taxi pulled up to the hospital, Sharon took charge again. “You know what, I’m going to go get the wheelchair for you and I’ll wheel you in.” I hesitantly said, “Please don’t do that. You’ve done so much.”

A desperate call came into Jimmy Gilleece’s bar. A newly married woman who had spent the afternoon at his dive beach bar couldn’t find her wallet. She didn’t care about her ID, credit cards, or $150 in cash—but her wedding ring was inside.

Gilleece didn’t like the idea that stealing could have occurred at his place, so he started off to n the wallet. He spent hours looking through footage(片段) from 16 different surveillance cameras(监控摄像头), watching the woman’s every step in the bar. At 4 p.m., the woman went to sit on a bench outside the bar and left when her taxi arrived. Within minutes, a young man in a hoodie(连帽衫) approached the bench, put something in his pocket, and walked off. Gilleece posted a picture on the bar’s Facebook page.

Within hours, Gilleece got a text from 17-year-old Rivers Prather who’d heard about the post from his sister. Prather admitted having taken the wallet and told Gilleece he’d done it because he hadn’t eaten in two days. He said he saw the ring but thought it was fake, so be took the money and threw the wallet off the public docks(码头) into the ocean. Then he bought a sandwich. Gilleece, unsure whether he believed Prathen told the teen to meet him at the docks. There, they got to talking, and Prather told him that he wasn’t getting along with his family and had been living in the woods for a week. Gilleece, a father of two, looked up and down Prather—his small figure, his red cheeks—and saw him for what he was; more of a kid than a criminal.

But the police were already on the case, and because of the missing ring, Prather could be facing crime charges. “He would be going to prison,” Gilleece thought to himself. “I had to help him somehow.”

I grew up in a large family of twelve siblings (兄弟姐妹). We weren’t poor by most standards, but things were definitely hard for us. My parents never shared their financial worries, choosing instead to let us have a carefree childhood. But I knew, as children often do, that there were times they went without and that certain things my friends had wouldn’t be available to me.

Back in those days, hot lunch was a luxury for the wealthier kids, and hot-lunch buyers sat separately from the students who brought cold lunch. My siblings and I brought lunch from home every day: thick slices of homemade bread, three cookies and a small apple. We would look on longingly as the rich kids proudly sat down with their steaming plates of fried chicken cold milk, peaches and a slice of cake.

I never said anything, but my first grade teacher, Mrs. Caruso, must have seen the desire in my eyes. One day she quietly pressed a note into my hand and whispered, “Give this to your mother.”

I hurried home and gave my mom the note. She read it and smiled. “Well, Mrs. Caruso said because of all your hard work, she wants to buy your lunch tomorrow.” The next day, I proudly carried my tray of chicken across the cafeteria and took my seat at the hot-lunch table. Honestly, the food wasn’t as great as I had imagined, but I was pleased to be there and felt honored to be a part of the group.

One rainy day, Mrs. Caruso asked me to stay after school. My stomach instantly dropped to the floor. Did she know I hadn’t finished my math sheet? After the other students had left, Mrs. Caruso said she was going to finish her work and then drive me home. It was raining, and she knew I had a long walk. We pulled up to my house and she got out, putting a few bags on the porch. “Tell your mom I had a few extra things she might want,” she said. Then she drove away. Inside the bags were clothes, toys, and books.

Dad and Madison were walking through the party store, gathering decorations for Madison’s upcoming birthday party.

“But I don’t want to invite Lucy Gilbert! I don’t like her!”

“Madison, you are being unreasonable. If every girl in your class is invited to a party but you, you’ll feel left out. It would be a big mistake to not invite Lucy to the party. ”

“She never even talks to me! ”

Dad sighed and moved down the aisle. “Lucy is a new girl in class. She just moved here a little over a month ago. Think about how that must feel. She doesn’t know one single person in the school. She left all of her old friends behind and now she has to try to make new friends. Your party will be a great chance for her to get to know everyone. ”

“No, it won’t. She will probably sit in the corner and not talk to anyone. Every day at lunch she sits all by herself. She wants to eat alone!" Madison shrugged and rolled her eyes.

“Madison, I’m done discussing this. You will invite every girl in your class, including Lucy Gilbert!"

On Saturday morning, the family blew up balloons and decorated the house cheerfully. Madison was dressed beautifully for the day, wearing her new blue dress. It was not typical of her to dress herself like this. She usually wore sports clothes because she loved to be outside riding her horse Star with a lead rope(缰绳).

Madison greeted her friends at the doorstep, picturing various presents her friends would bring her. In the meanwhile, she was wondering whether Lucy would ruin the party if she came. Anyhow, all the girls she invited came finally, including Lucy.

The girls had a fantastic time by singing and dancing while Lucy sat in the corner silently alone. Later, all the girls gathered around the table as Madison opened her presents. Opening them one by one, Madison thanked her friends, with a bright smile on her face.
