Give Ugly a Chance!

When it comes to wildlife protection, all species—the good, the bad, and the ugly—should be treated equally. Pandas, dolphins, and other cute wildlife are important, but we must pay attention to less cute animals, too. The world needs all kinds—without variety, our planet cannot survive. So if you want the future to be beautiful, you have to give ugly a chance.

Don’t Make Paper with My Home!

Billions of trees are being cut down every year to make paper for humans. Every tree that is cut down is a part of the habitat of animals such as these koalas. In this way a lot of animal homes are being destroyed! Is it right to make animals homeless so that humans can have more paper?

【推荐1】According to a study conducted by UK scientists, there is something known as “plant blindness”. This leads to the common misconception that plants seem to be “less alive” as compared to animals.

Plant blindness was not proven to be what people were born with; rather, the severely reduced contact with nature in urbanized societies appeared to be the problem’s root. According to the research, a decline in relevant prior (先前的) experience with plants causes the cycle of inattention.

Urban civilizations display well-documented plant blindness. Kids are found to frequently think of plants as less superior to animals, especially when they’re young, and struggle to recognize a wide variety of species. Both teachers and students reported having different levels of plant knowledge, especially primary teachers without a science degree. Older people are more knowledgeable about plants because they are more likely to appreciate outdoor activities.

35 studies concluded that urbanization or modernization had a detrimental effect on plant knowledge. The usefulness of plant gathering was decreased by a greater dependency on urban services and a cash economy. The amount of time available to spend outdoors was reduced by work and school. These factors also decreased family time, which had a negative effect on verbally passing down plant knowledge to younger and older relatives.

Stagg said that instead of a cognitive (认知的) barrier to the visual perception of plants, people who live in highly industrialized countries have a lack of plant attention caused by a decline in relevant exposure to plants.

Stagg pointed out to break the cycle of plant awareness, people must be exposed to biodiverse environments and the key is to show that there are some direct advantages of plants to people as opposed to indirect advantages stemming from their use in industry or advantages to distant, traditional societies. Experiences with edible and practical plants in local environments can help with this. Younger generations’ level of botanical knowledge is directly correlated with how useful they think this knowledge is to them.

1. What causes “plant blindness”?
A.The plants have little attraction.B.People lack contact with plants.
C.The plants have inactive characters.D.People live an unhealthy lifestyle.
2. Who are most likely to have “plant blindness”?
A.Teenagers interested in animals.B.Experts devoted to agriculture.
C.Students majoring in biology.D.Farmers working in the field.
3. What does the underlined word “detrimental” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Encouraging.B.Harmful.C.Joyful.D.Temporary.
4. Which statement might Stagg agree with?
A.“Plant blindness” can be treated or reduced.
B.“Plant blindness” is bad for social development.
C.“Plant blindness” is something people are born with.
D.“Plant blindness” happens most in less developed countries.

2】There has been a very serious decline(下降) in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic. This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.

Protective measures will have to be put into effect if these deep-sea fish are to survive. Research on five such species shows that numbers have reduced by between 87 percent and 98 percent. This puts them on the list of “extremely endangered”. Many species could well disappear completely if the present trend continues. These are species that have been swimming in our oceans for hundreds of millions of years.

The problem is stressed by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less than twenty years. Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years. Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low. The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of typical concern, as large fish tend to produce more descendants than small ones.

None of these facts has been taken into consideration by the fishing industry. The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding(快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.

The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry. Billions of people rely on fish for protein. Measures must be taken to not only preserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.

1. Why did people start fishing for deep-sea fish?
A.Because deep sea fish tastes better.
B.Because there are not enough fish to eat in the shallow sea.
C.Because technological development makes it easier to catch deep-sea fish.
D.Because water pollution in shallow sea areas is serious.
2. According to paragraph 3, what serious results have been caused by the fishing of deep-sea fish?
A.There are deep-sea fish species that are completely extinct.
B.Deep-sea fish have lost their ability to reproduce.
C.Deep-sea fish reproduce more slowly.
D.The size of deep-sea fish has decreased.
3. What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A.The fishing industry catches deep-sea fish in a ruinous way.
B.Elephants reproduce at the same rate as rabbits.
C.Sardine and herring are also endangered like deep-sea fish.
D.Elephants are being killed in large numbers.
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fast-breeding fish do not need protection.
B.The decline in deep-sea fish has occurred in the last 20 years.
C.The results of overfishing should be taken seriously.
D.The destruction of the deep-sea environment does not affect human life.

3】A team of psychologists led by Dr. Karen McComb at the University of Sussex in the UK have discovered an effective way for humans to communicate with cats through slow blinking (眨眼睛), similar to how cats interact with each other.

Dr. McComb and her team conducted two experiments to study this phenomenon. In the first study, owners were instructed by researchers Tasmin Humphrey and Andrew Wood to slowly blink at their cats from a distance while being recorded. Humphrey and Wood found the cats were more likely to respond with slow blinking of their own compared to when no interaction took place.

To follow up on these findings, McComb, Humphrey, and Wood designed a second experiment without considering the exsisting relationship between humans and cats. Researchers, including McComb, performed the same slow blinking action. Like in the first experiment, the cats in this study also responded more favorably to slow blinking by returning the gesture and more readily approaching an extended hand, according to Humphrey’s analysis.

The slow blink expression involves partially closing the eyes briefly, copying a relaxed, friendly facial expression in humans. McComb notes that for cats, it appears to signal good intentions as constant staring could be seen as threatening. Wood says that cats may have developed this language to acknowledge humans who react positively to the signal. Being able to effectively communicate acceptance in this subtle cat way seems to strengthen the bond between cats and their owners, McComb adds.

McComb, Humphrey and Wood hope their findings can provide insight into cat behavior and thinking. They also aim to apply this knowledge of cross-species communication to evaluate cat health in various places like veterinary (兽医的) clinics and shelters, according to Humphrey. A deeper understanding of how cats interpret and respond to humans can improve our ability to properly care for household and outdoor cat populations, McComb concludes.

1. How was the second experiment different from the first one?
A.It recorded the interactive behavior of cats.
B.It required cat owners to blink from a distance.
C.It studied how cats communicate with each other.
D.It focused on how cats react to strangers’ slow blinking.
2. Why may cats develop slow blinking according to experts?
A.To attract their owners’ attention.
B.To show friendliness to other animals.
C.To respond to humans’ positive reactions.
D.To send out a signal for help to their partners.
3. What do the researchers hope to apply their findings to?
A.Improving cat behavior and habits.
B.Assessing health conditions of cats.
C.Developing ways to treat cats’ diseases.
D.Helping cat owners train their cats quickly.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Humans can communicate with cats by blinking slowly.
B.Extending hands to cats can strengthen the bond with them.
C.Cats respond favorably to humans’ friendly facial expressions.
D.Understanding cat signals improves humans’ ability to care for them.
