It was around eleven o'clock at night, and Mrs. Jones was walking alone when a young boy suddenly appeared from behind and attempted to grab her purse. The strap (带子) broke with a single pull, combined with the weight of the purse, which caused him to lose his balance. Instead of making a quick escape, he fell on his back, legs flailing (用力地胡乱挥动) in the air. The woman swiftly turned around and delivered a swift kick to his behind. Then, she bent down, picked the boy up by his shirtfront, and shook him until his teeth rattled (咯咯作响) .
Mrs. Jones asked, “What possessed you to do that?” The boy replied, “I didn’t mean to.” She accused him of lying, to which the boy admitted, “I'm sorry, lady.”
The woman then pointed out, “Your face is dirty. Don’t you have anyone at home to remind you to wash your face?” The boy replied, “No, ma’am.” She stated that his face would get washed later in the evening and started to walk up the street, dragging the boy along with her back home.
Upon arriving at her home, Mrs. Jones sent the boy to the washroom for a face wash, finally setting him loose. The boy, who seemed to be about fourteen or fifteen years old, had a thin but strong build and was dressed in tennis shoes and blue jeans. Mrs. Jones thought if he had been her son, she would have taught him right from wrong.
“You gonna take me to jail?” asked the boy, bending over the sink.
“Not with that face,” said the woman. “I was trying to get home to cook me a bite to eat and you took my purse! What do you want the money for?”
The boy admitted he wanted a pair of blue suede (绒面革) shoes, but the woman pointed out that instead of grabbing her purse to obtain them, he could have asked her. The boy was surprised by her response.

The spot of red was what first caught Randy Heiss’s attention on December 16, 2018. He was hiking the remote land behind his farm in a small town near the U.S.-Mexico border, and there lying on the grass was a balloon. He walked toward it with his dog, thinking he should pick it up and throw it away.
That’s when he noticed the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami,” it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss flipped the paper over. On the back he saw a numbered list, all in Spanish. His Spanish wasn’t very good, but he could see it was a Christmas list!
Heiss was charmed. He suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Heiss had sent, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. Based on the wind direction, he was almost sure that was where it came from. Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, doll clothes and art supplies.
Heiss then posted his search about finding Dayami on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family. A few days passed with no results; Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private Facebook message to Radio Xeny, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away and promised him to post his search on the station’s Facebook page immediately.

16-year-old Tim looked up to his father Roger, who worked as a firefighter. While the teenager always talked about his dream of joining the fire department, the man didn’t believe the boy was cut out to be a firefighter because Tim left the usual stereotype of a bookworm: a straight-A student who wore large glasses, and was physically weak.
It was a typical school day. Tim’s math teacher announced their weekly test results, and the boy was delighted to learn that he had scored the highest mark. His friend Harry, however, was upset because he got a bad grade.
Seeing him sit in a corner with his head resting on the table, he approached him and said, “Hey, Harry, I know you got a bad grade, but I can teach you these topics. You’ll grasp it in no time, I’m sure. And you can improve your grade next week. What do you say?” “That’s so sweet of you, Tim! Let’s meet at my house after school today,” Harry said with a smile. “Sure!” Tim replied.
Harry lived on the outskirts of town. It took Tim, who passed his driving test recently, half an hour to drive there. Once his car neared Harry’s estate, he was shocked to see a blazing fire. Upon driving closer, he realized his house was on fire. Frightened, he quickly picked up his phone and called 911.
Then, Tim took off his shirt, grabbed a bottle of water from his car, and poured it on the shirt. He wrapped the wet shirt around his face, as he had seen in movies, and entered the house. He started climbing towards the hallway window of Harry’s bedroom.
Tim found a baseball bat in the hall. It took him five whole minutes to swing it hard enough to break the window. Once the glass was broken, he rushed towards Harry’s room. He couldn’t see much because of the thick black smoke floating in the air, but he managed to locate him. He was lying unconscious (昏迷的) on his bed after breathing in the smoke.

Throwing on his shoes, he ran out to investigate. Fee and his wife were traveling through Canada’s Banff National Park to enjoy its stunning beauty and awesome wildlife. It was the latter he now encountered. Although it was dark, Fee could detect a neighboring tent in a mess. Backing out was a wolf, dragging something in his teeth. That thing was a man.
Moments earlier, Elisa and Matt Rispoli, from New Jersey, were asleep with their two young children when the wolf tore into their tent. It was like something out of a horror movie. For three minutes Matt threw his body in front of Elisa and the boys who would stand little chance of running faster than a wolf and fought the wolf with bare hands. Atone point, Matt got the upper hand, pinning the wolf to the ground. But the wolf clamped its jaw onto Matt’s arm, set its powerful legs, and began tugging Matt outside while Elisa was pulling on his legs trying to get him back.
It was then that Russ Fee entered the picture. He ran at the beast, kicking it like he was kicking in a door. The wolf dropped Matt and merged from the tent. Wolves are large, Fee felt like he had punched someone that was way out of his weight class. He could feel its heavy breath facing and he could smell the terrible pungent (刺激性) ordor it emitted fishy, oily and bloody.
The wolf turned its anger on Fee, exposing his sharp teeth and snarling at him. Terrified, Fee withdrew a bit. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw his minivan was not far away. Meanwhile, panicked as they were, the two boys concealed themselves at a safe distance from the battle. The elder boy used the satellite phone to call for help.

This Old Chair
“Mom! I’m home!” John slammed the door and dropped his books on a nearby chair.
“Hi, John, home already?” His mom turned around, “Spring is coming, and I am doing our annual spring cleaning. Come and help me, okay?”
“Okay, okay,” John agreed reluctantly.
They cleaned upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside, until everything was spotless. Exhausted, they sank into the couch. Wearily pointing to Pop-Pop’s chair, which was faded and worn, John’s mom exclaimed, “Oh my! That old chair has got to go. We’ll buy Pop-Pop a new one. Let’s take the chair to the curb (马路边缘). Tomorrow the garbage truck is picking up on our block.”
As they attempted to move the chair, Pop-Pop, John’s grandpa, who lived with them since Grandma had died, worked his way through the door. Seeing what was happening, he quickly blocked their way. “Oh, no!” he protested. “You can’t take my chair.”
“It’s old. . . It’s worn. . . . ” John’s mom argued, a slight edge to her voice.
“No,” Pop-Pop persisted, trying to push his chair back into place.
“But Pop, we’ll buy you a new one,” John’s mom tried to persuade the old man.
“I don’t want a new one,” Pop-Pop’s voice trembled.
“I give up.” John’s mom let go of the chair. “We’ll discuss it tonight when Matt gets home.”Matt, John’s dad, was still at work. With a sigh of relief, the old man sank into his chair and closed his eyes.
“Pop-Pop, why won’t you let us get rid of the chair?” John asked when his mother left the room. “It’s so old.”
“You don’t understand, John.” Pop-Pop shook his head and said, “I sat in this chair, with your grandma right here, when I asked her to marry me. It was so long ago, but when I sit in this chair and close my eyes I feel she is near.” The old man tenderly stroked the arm of the chair.
It’s amazing, John thought, how Pop-Pop can remember things from the past. In the present, he forgets almost everything. John sat down on the floor by Pop-Pop’s feet and listened as the old man went on.

After flying all night from Washington, D. C., I was tired as I arrived at a hospital in Denver to hold a workshop on volunteer spirit. As I entered the hospital, a tired middle-aged man came over and asked me “Are you the head of the Make-A-Wish Foundation?” “Yes,” I replied. “Well, my name is Caleb. My daughter Nicola was diagnosed as a brain tumor(脑瘤). Her dying wish was to learn figure-skating and performed in public.” sobbed the tear poor father.
“Here’s Nicola.” Caleb said as he put her skinny hand in mine. Before me stood a sixteen-year-old girl wearing a bright red and orange hat to cover her head, which was bald from all of the chemotherapy treatments(化疗). Smiling shyly, the girl began her story.
When limited to her hospital bed, Nicola took comfort in watching her favorite sport – figure skating-on TV. As the skaters twirled (旋转) in the air and glided across the ice, Nicola pictured that she was one of them, zigzagging across a glittering ice rank (溜冰场) as the audience cheered her name. After months of isolation, Nicola wanted nothing more than to be surrounded by a crowd of adoring supporters.
When she learned she would be granted a wish, Nicola came to find me with hope. She knew that what she had imagined for herself would finally become a reality. “Sir, could you please help me?” Nicola uttered, with voice a bit trembling.
Tears welling in my eyes, I was choked up. I cleared my throat, smiled and said, “Sweetheart. Thanks for making a wish. Let’s make it happen.”
Soon everything was prepared for her. Together, a professional figure skater Linda and a community of kind-hearted supporters were called in to help. A local entertainment venue was arranged. For the following two months, Nicola began her training. She failed countless times in the process of being a skater. However, whenever she fell, she struggled to pull herself up and never gave up.

I saw a kid from my class walking home from schoo1. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself,“Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must be silly. ”I had quite a weekend planned,so I shook my head and went on.
As I was walking,I saw a group of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.
My heart went out to him. So. I ran to him. As he was looking for his glasses,I saw tears in his eyes. I handed him his glasses. He looked at me and said,“Thanks!”There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratefulness. I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived. It turned out he lived near me,so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before coming to this schoo1.
We talked all the way home. and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. The more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. Monday morning came, and Kyle carried all his books again. I stopped him and helped him carry half the books. Over the next four years,Kyle and I became best friends.
When we were seniors,Kyle was the best student in our class. He was chosen to give a speech at the coming graduation ceremony.
