Of Special Interest to Freshman
Freshman Seminars
Freshman Seminars are small classes just for freshmen, with some of York’s most distinguished teachers. Some seminars provide an introduction to a particular field of study; others take an interdisciplinary (跨学科的) approach to a variety of topics. All seminars provide a friendly environment for developing relationships with teachers and other students.
STARS
STARS (Science, Technology, and Research Scholars) provides undergraduates of every year with an opportunity to combine research and course-based study. The program offers research opportunities and support to students historically disadvantaged in the fields of natural science and quantitative reasoning, such as racial and ethnic minorities, women, and the physically challenged. More than 100 students each year participate in STARS, during the academic year or over the summer months.
Academic Advising
Academic Advising is a collective effort by the residential colleges, academic departments and various offices connected to York University Dean’s (院长的) office. Students’ primary academic advisors are their residential college deans, to whom they may always turn for academic and personal advice. The deans live in residential colleges and supervise the advising networks in the college. Each academic department has a director of undergraduate studies (DUS) who can discuss with students the department’s course offerings and requirements for majors.
Perspectives on Science and Engineering
Perspectives on Science and Engineering is a lecture and discussion course for about 75 selected freshmen who have exceptionally strong backgrounds in science or mathematics. The yearlong course explores a broad range of topics, exposes students to questions at the frontiers of science, and connects the first-year students to York’s Scientific Community.

An online post from a few years ago about a teacher in South Carolina who started “a Gentlemen’s Club” for boys with no father at home has once more caught a lot of attention.
Raymond Nelson, a student support expert at Memminger Elementaryin Downtown Charleston,South Carolina, along with his fellow teacher Kenneth Joyner, came up with the idea of helping kids who are at risk. He gets nearly 60 students together every Wednesday to join his club , where boys are expected to dress for the occasion (场合). As the group’s motto (格言) is “Look good, feel good, do good,” the youngsters will turn up in their Sunday best.
The kind-hearted teacher has a lot of donated clothes to lend to the kids so they don’t feel left out if they don’t have their own smart clothes. “I know a lot of them have a hard time because they don’t have men at home, so I just want them to grow up and think of the things that I teach them. They like the reaction (反应) of walking up to classrooms and someone saying, ‘Oh, you look so nice and handsome’; they just love it.”
The children come from first to fifth grade, and when they join the other gentlemen in the club they discuss many topics, from hand-shaking to respecting their elders. While the club started out as “Gentlemen’s Club”, Nelson renamed it “Boys with a Purpose”, which will surely give these young men a sense of direction in life.

Thank you all for coming to the meeting. I’d like to start by confirming (保证) that we will receive some money from the government for our school trip to Indonesia. We will receive about $1,300 per child, which will reduce the whole cost to you.
Now that we are sure to get the money, it is time to do some serious planning. We are sure that the trip will be very exciting for the children, especially if they have not traveled abroad before. There are many advantages(优点) of having some experiences to different places and cultures. Your children will be able to learn a lot about other people and cultures on this trip.
Leanne is with us tonight. Leanne, where are you? Put up your hand so that the people can see who you are. Thank you. Leanne went on a trip there with some other students last year and will be happy to tell you of her experiences and answer any questions you might have. We will hear from her a bit later in the meeting.
We only have five months to organize the trip. From past experience I can tell you that this time will go very quickly. So we need to start organizing the trip.

【推荐2】Land of fire and ice: Iceland
Join an unforgettable tour of Iceland’s splendid landscapes, timed to arrange four days filled with volcanic and geological adventure, and evening opportunities to see the Aurora Borealis.
Day 1: Vatnajokull Glacier (冰川)
Today you’ll take a walk on Europe’s biggest ice cap-Vatnajokull-which has around 30 glaciers flowing out from it. No experience is necessary to take part in the hike. It’s discouraging to think that the glacier is retreating due to rising world temperatures, and in future years the glacier may be gone. If you prefer a relaxing morning you can explore the surroundings of the farm stay and head to the Thorbergur Centre.
Day 2: Secret lagoon (泻湖) and Reykjavik
This morning we make our way to the Lava Centre which is an interactive, high-tech educational exhibition describing volcanic activity, earthquakes and the creation of Iceland over millions of years. After our visit, we will continue to the Secret Lagoon natural hot springs, located in the small village called Fludir, giving you the opportunity to relax in the warm waters before travelling to Reykjavik.
Day 3: Reykjanes peninsula (半岛)
Head out to the Reykjanes Peninsula. It is a land-born, highly volcanic counterpart of the Mid-Atlantic Spreading Ridge where two tectonic plates part at an average rate of 2.0-2.5 cm/yr. Four volcanic systems and fissure (裂缝) groups line the peninsula from SW to NE. They contain open fissures, normal faults, high-temperature fields and volcanic fissures.
Day 4: Depart Reykjavik
Today is departure day and time to say “sjaumst”. Your group departure transfer will take you to the airport for your flight home.
