Last summer holiday, Aunt Emily took us to a safari park (野生动物园),not far from Liverpool.

I was very happy to go as I had never been to a safari park before. It’s a very interesting park, full of wild animals running freely.

When we got there, we bought our tickets and drove into the park. We were very excited at the thought of going to see the lions. But to get to the lions’ place we had to go through the monkeys’ land first. And that was an unforgettable experience because they climbed all over the car, ate apples and bananas, and threw all kinds of things at us. They seemed very unfriendly.

Anyway, we went on our way to the lions’ place where we had to lock ourselves in the car as we knew lions could be dangerous. A lion came up very close to us. Then it was on the bonnet (车盖). It looked calm but we felt terrified. Aunt Emily, who isn’t very brave, started to call for help. The kids started crying. Only my brother, George, stayed calm. I sounded the horn (喇叭) but nobody heard us.

In the end a guard arrived in his car, and the lion just got off our car and started smelling the guard’s hand as if nothing was the matter.

【推荐1】It was the end of a long, tiring week of work and I was desperately in need of some positive feedback. More specifically, I was in search of those sweet dialogues: The compliment. As none seemed to be upcoming, I decided that I would create an accidental one. Then I ordered a pizza to be delivered instead of laboring in the kitchen after such a long week.

After dinner was delivered and consumed, I gathered my family in the living room to watch an old film version of “A Christmas Carol”, hoping that they would complain about the plain food I ordered. We got to the part in the movie where Bob Cratchitt describes what Christmas dinner will be like to his wife and family.

“It will be a PERFECT dinner.” Then, turning to his son, he says, “Won’t it, Tim?”

Tiny Tim agrees enthusiastically. “Oh, yes, Father. It will be the best one in all of Londontown!”

I just had to speak up at this point. There was no sense in waiting for a compliment. I was getting impatient, so I used the direct approach.

“Well, at least Mrs. Cratchitt’s meals get noticed.”

Jeffrey, lying on the sofa, turned his head around. “OK. Mom, that PIZZA you PHONED in tonight was GREAT!!”

“It was the finest pizza in all of Londontown, my dear!” Walter cut in.

OK, the point was well taken: I did phone for the delivery of the pizza. But does that deny the dinners I cooked after working a full day in the previous weeks and months? Finally I realized that sometimes it just doesn’t pay to fish for compliments; sometimes you hook yourself with your own bait (诱饵).

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了因为父亲患癌症,作者一家改变饮食结构,建起一个农场,并且农场有了新的发展目标。

【推荐2】When my dad was first diagnosed(诊断)with cancer and had radiation, I pushed my folks to start eating more fresh produce and preferably organics. My mom really improved her cooking from the roasted slice of pork and frozen-veggies dinners that I had fallen in love with. Dad said he had never eaten so well.

“People never change,” my dad often said but he became skilled in overall treatments and began to take well-informed control of his own course of action. I wasn’t thinking too much of his changes, but he had survived cancer for over 10 years, constantly learning, doing a bit of travel, and always looking pleasant and smiling.

My dad and I decorated a farmhouse in 2012, and I started taking care of the orchard(果园), and the garden, and learning to care for some chickens. Bringing farm-fresh food to my folks was a way I could contribute to dad’s health as well as his enjoyment of life.

The idea for this business came from what we learned about the role of food in health. My dad’s doctor told him that eating fresh produce could help resist cancer. Dad helped me set up the farm and worked till just a few days before he passed. But all of what I do here is based on experience, research, and strong values.

The goals of this farm developed as we learned, and here we have it: Produce with a purpose—fresh produce grown for disease-fighting and preventive health value, delivered with easy but delicious recipes as well as support, encouragement, overall thinking and even a bit of humor.

1. What was the author’s favorite food in the past?
A.Organic food.B.Fresh vegetables.
C.Barbecued meat.D.Fast-food meal.
2. What did the author think of his dad?
A.He was a stubborn senior.B.He was crazy about adventures.
C.He was indifferent to his disease.D.He was positive about challenges.
3. What inspired the author and his dad to start the farm?
A.The pressure of his mother.B.The suggestions of a doctor.
C.The deadly cancer of his dad.D.The great harvest on the farm.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.A farm with a purpose.B.A dream of my family.
C.The cancer of my father.D.The value of fresh produce.

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。作者通过描述自己的屁股被水母蜇了之后特别痛苦的经历来鼓励读者,要用积极的心态面对生活。

【推荐3】Before I can tell you what happened to me, you first must learn about my job: perform underwater repairs. As you know, my office lies at the bottom of the sea. I wear a suit to office. It’s a wet suit.

This time of year the water is quite cool. So what we do to keep warm is a water heater. This $20,000 piece of equipment that sucks the water out of the sea. It heats it to a delightful temperature. It then pumps it down to the diver(潜水员) through a garden pipe.

Now, this all sounds like a wonderful plan, and I’ve used it several times.

What I do when I get to the bottom is take the pipe and stuff it down the back of my wet suit. This floods my whole suit with warm water. It’s fantastic.

Everything was going well until all of a sudden, my butt(屁股) started to itch(痒). So, of course, I scratched it. This, of course, only made things worse. Within a few seconds my butt started to feel hot. I pulled the pipe out from my back, thinking that maybe the water was too hot, but the damage was done.

In pain, I realized what had happened. The hot water machine had sucked up a jellyfish(水母) and pumped it directly into my suit. Now, since I don’t have any hair on my back, the jellyfish couldn’t stick to it.

I immediately informed the dive director of my situation over the communicator. His reply was unclear due to the fact that he, along with five other divers, were all laughing hysterically.

Needless to say, I gave up the dive. As I climbed out of the water, the doctor, with tears of laughter running down his face, handed me a tube of cream and told me to rub it on my butt. The cream put the fire out, but I couldn’t poop(排泄) for two days because my bottom was swollen.

So, next time you’re having a bad day at work, think about how much worse it would be if you had a jellyfish shoved up your bottom.

Now repeat to yourself, “I love my job, I love my job, I love my job.” May you NEVER have a jellyfish bad day.

D.Because voice ran slower under the sea.
4. Which of the following can best describe the writer?
A.Positive and humorous.B.Kind and friendly.
C.Helpful and honest.D.Grateful and selfless.
