Two firefighters     1     (wait) in line at a fast food restaurant when the siren (警报器) sounded on their fire engine outside. As they turned to leave, a couple who had received their order a moment ago     2     (hand) their food to the firefighters. The couple then got back in line to reorder. To appreciate their selfless act as a reward, the manager refused     3     (take) the couple’s money.

People in Paris love the view of the city’s old     1     (building), especially Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris (巴黎圣母院). But the top of the 850-year-old church and two-thirds of the roof     2     (destroy) by a fire on April 16. Parisians were so shocked and gathered around the giant church, praying for the hundreds of firefighters     3     fought the flames.

A man came to the USA from another country. After     1     (settle) down at an island, he went into a cafeteria to get something     2     (eat). He sat down at an empty table and waited for someone to take his order, but nobody did.     3     (final), a woman with a tray full of food sat down opposite him and informed him     4     the cafeteria worked.

“Start out at that end,” she said. “Just go along the line and pick out what you want. At     5     other end they’ll tell you how much you have to pay.”

“I was     6     (surprise) how everything worked in the USA,” the man told his friend. “Life’s a cafeteria there. You can get anything you want as long as you are willing to pay the price. You can even get success,     7     you’ll never get it if you wait for someone to bring it to you. You have to get up and get it     8     (you).”

You can’t change the inevitable. The only thing you can do     9     (be) to control your attitude. Once you reach that point in life, happiness and     10     (satisfy) can’t be too far away.

That Christmas I turned sixteen. While decorating the tree together     1    Mama, I accidentally dropped and broke an old glass ball on it. The ball had been on our tree     2     I could remember. I knelt to pick up the     3    (break)pieces and was surprised to find a small sheet of paper among them. Unfolding the tiny note, I recognized my father’s roughly penciled writing. It was Mother’s Day morning last year. By now rescuers and physicians had arrived, and were attending the     6     ( injure) woman. As we walked up to her, my son became frightened by all the blood and medical     7     (equip). He said he was just too scared to go up to her.

Instead I gave the flower to the woman’s husband     8     told him,“ My son was very upset about your wife and bought her this flower to cheer her up.”

The old man was moved and said, “Thank you so much. You have a good son. Happy Mother’s Day to you.”

The man then gave his wife the flower,     9     (tell) her whom it was from.     10     badly hurt, the old lady looked up at Tenyson with thanks in her eyes and gave him a little smile.
