“I still cannot believe it!” said the newest Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, Diébédo Francis Kéré, who had already received numerous accolades in his field, including the Aga Khan Award and the Thomas Jefferson medal. But he was still as surprised as anyone else to be selected for the field’s most famous prize.

Most of the architects and critics had openly supposed that 2022 would be Sir David Adjaye’s year, who is best known for designing such notable buildings as the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. Kéré, who is based in Berlin but centers much of his practice in Africa, has been far lesser known, with signature buildings that include primary schools and a health care clinic.

Kéré said his architectural practice was inspired by his own experience attending school with around 100 other children in a region where temperatures were regularly higher than 38℃.

“It’s very hot inside and there was no light, while outside, the sunlight was abundant. So I dreamed of making it better one day,” he said.

When he was twenty, in 1985, Kéré earned a scholarship to study carpentry (木工) in Berlin. While studying roofing and furniture making, he also attended night school and was admitted to Technische Universität Berlin, from which he graduated in 2004 with an advanced degree in architecture. He was still a student when he designed and built the Gando Primary School. The recognition it earned helped Kéré open his own office in Berlin.

In his designs for Gando Primary School and Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School in Burkina Faso, Kéré drew on traditional building materials such as local clay mixed with concrete, and emphasized shade and shadows with well-aired spaces that reduce the need for air conditioning.

1. What does the word “accolades” underlined in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Prizes.B.Projects.C.Experts.D.Scholarships.
2. Which word best describes most of the architects’ and critics’ reaction?
A.Disapproving.B.Unconcerned.C.Overjoyed.D.Surprised.
3. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A.Kéré got a scholarship from Technische Universität Berlin.
B.Kéré studied roofing and furniture making at a night school.
C.Kéré was recognized in his field when he was still a student.
D.Kéré was inspired by his own experience at Gando Primary School.
4. The buildings of Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School are ________.
A.hot and dark insideB.environmentally friendly
C.built with high-tech materialsD.designed by Sir David Adjaye

文章大意:这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者在一个玩具店购物时看到的一个小女孩对一个小男孩的善举,从中她看到了圣诞节真正的意义。

【推荐1】I was doing some Christmas shopping in a toy store and decided to look at Barbie dolls for my nieces. A nicely dressed little girl was excitedly looking through the Barbie dolls as well. As she was looking, a little boy came to the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but his clothes were obviously old. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head and said, “No.”

The little girl had chosen her Barbie. However, she stopped and was watching them. Rather dejectedly, the boy had to give up the Pokemon toys and choose something else. The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one and raced towards the checkout. I picked up my purchases and got in line behind them. Then, much to the little girl’s delight, the little boy and his father got in line behind me. After the toy was paid for and bagged, the little girl handed it back to the cashier (收银员) and whispered something in her ear. The cashier smiled and put the package under the counter.

I paid for my purchases and was rearranging things when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier checked his purchases and said, “Congratulations, you are my hundredth customer today, and you win a prize!” With that, she handed the little boy the Pokemon toys, and he could only stare in surprise. It was exactly what he had wanted!

The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway during all of this. Then they walked out. As I walked back to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I’ll never forget what she said to him. “Daddy, didn’t Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?” He said, “Of course they did, honey.” To which the little girl replied, “Well, I just did!”

I feel very shocked to have witnessed the true spirit of Christmas in that toy store, in the form of a little girl who understands more about the meaning of this festival than most adults I know.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。主要介绍了瑞典出生的厨师Nilas Corneliussen的生平故事和职业生涯。

【推荐3】Nilas Corneliussen is the Swedish-born head chef of a Nordic-Asian combination restaurant in Thailand’s capital.

While Thailand had long appealed to him, even in his youth, Corneliussen said he never imagined a career in cooking. Instead, he was drawn to Muay Thai, or Thai boxing. During high school breaks, he even traveled alone to Thailand to join Muay Thai training camps. During those trips, he fell in love with the country. After suffering a hand injury while boxing, he was forced to move on from Muay Thai. However, he didn’t stop thinking about Thailand.

The very day after graduating from high school in Sweden, Corneliussen booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok and applied for a study visa. It wasn’t until halfway through his studies, from 2010 to 2014, that he was invited to the birthday party of a fellow student and friend, whose parents ran local Thai restaurants. The atmosphere inside the kitchen attracted him—everyone had to come together to make it happen.

At the time, Corneliussen didn’t think he could run after his new enthusiasm for cooking in Thailand. Instead, he thought it would be best to go back to his roots and understand the flavors he’d grown up with before cooking anything, so he finished his studies and moved back to Europe. It’s a view he doesn’t agree with today. He thinks now that no cooking style is more important than another.

Starting out in a Stockholm restaurant, he honed his skills and finally won the silver in the world’s most famous international cooking competition as part of the Swedish team. Despite the success, he returned to Thailand with his love for cooking arts in 2022.

“In Thailand, I get this feeling of belonging and connection to the people, food and culture,” he says, recalling his first days as a foreigner in the Thailand.
