“I still cannot believe it!” said the newest Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, Diébédo Francis Kéré, who had already received numerous accolades in his field, including the Aga Khan Award and the Thomas Jefferson medal. But he was still as surprised as anyone else to be selected for the field’s most famous prize.
Most of the architects and critics had openly supposed that 2022 would be Sir David Adjaye’s year, who is best known for designing such notable buildings as the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, and the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. Kéré, who is based in Berlin but centers much of his practice in Africa, has been far lesser known, with signature buildings that include primary schools and a health care clinic.
Kéré said his architectural practice was inspired by his own experience attending school with around 100 other children in a region where temperatures were regularly higher than 38℃.
“It’s very hot inside and there was no light, while outside, the sunlight was abundant. So I dreamed of making it better one day,” he said.
When he was twenty, in 1985, Kéré earned a scholarship to study carpentry (木工) in Berlin. While studying roofing and furniture making, he also attended night school and was admitted to Technische Universität Berlin, from which he graduated in 2004 with an advanced degree in architecture. He was still a student when he designed and built the Gando Primary School. The recognition it earned helped Kéré open his own office in Berlin.
In his designs for Gando Primary School and Naaba Belem Goumma Secondary School in Burkina Faso, Kéré drew on traditional building materials such as local clay mixed with concrete, and emphasized shade and shadows with well-aired spaces that reduce the need for air conditioning.

As she was looking, a little boy came to the Pokemon toys. He was dressed neatly, but his clothes were obviously old. He was with his father as well, and kept picking up the Pokemon video toys. Each time he picked one up and looked at his father, his father shook his head and said, “No.”
The little girl had chosen her Barbie. However, she stopped and was watching them. Rather dejectedly, the boy had to give up the Pokemon toys and choose something else. The little girl put her Barbie back on the shelf, and ran over to the Pokemon toys. She excitedly picked up one and raced towards the checkout. I picked up my purchases and got in line behind them. Then, much to the little girl’s delight, the little boy and his father got in line behind me. After the toy was paid for and bagged, the little girl handed it back to the cashier (收银员) and whispered something in her ear. The cashier smiled and put the package under the counter.
I paid for my purchases and was rearranging things when the little boy came up to the cashier. The cashier checked his purchases and said, “Congratulations, you are my hundredth customer today, and you win a prize!” With that, she handed the little boy the Pokemon toys, and he could only stare in surprise. It was exactly what he had wanted!
The little girl and her father had been standing at the doorway during all of this. Then they walked out. As I walked back to my car, I heard the father ask his daughter why she had done that. I’ll never forget what she said to him. “Daddy, didn’t Grandparents want me to buy something that would make me happy?” He said, “Of course they did, honey.” To which the little girl replied, “Well, I just did!”
I feel very shocked to have witnessed the true spirit of Christmas in that toy store, in the form of a little girl who understands more about the meaning of this festival than most adults I know.

While Thailand had long appealed to him, even in his youth, Corneliussen said he never imagined a career in cooking. Instead, he was drawn to Muay Thai, or Thai boxing. During high school breaks, he even traveled alone to Thailand to join Muay Thai training camps. During those trips, he fell in love with the country. After suffering a hand injury while boxing, he was forced to move on from Muay Thai. However, he didn’t stop thinking about Thailand.
The very day after graduating from high school in Sweden, Corneliussen booked a one-way ticket to Bangkok and applied for a study visa. It wasn’t until halfway through his studies, from 2010 to 2014, that he was invited to the birthday party of a fellow student and friend, whose parents ran local Thai restaurants. The atmosphere inside the kitchen attracted him—everyone had to come together to make it happen.
At the time, Corneliussen didn’t think he could run after his new enthusiasm for cooking in Thailand. Instead, he thought it would be best to go back to his roots and understand the flavors he’d grown up with before cooking anything, so he finished his studies and moved back to Europe. It’s a view he doesn’t agree with today. He thinks now that no cooking style is more important than another.
Starting out in a Stockholm restaurant, he honed his skills and finally won the silver in the world’s most famous international cooking competition as part of the Swedish team. Despite the success, he returned to Thailand with his love for cooking arts in 2022.

Her deal with MGM stated that she would never play the role of a servant. During this period, AfricanAmerican actors were mostly limited to playing servants or African natives.
But this refusal also limited her movie career. Horne was generally only offered the role of a nightclub singer. Her characters did not interact with white characters in these movies. This way, her part could be cut from the version of the movie that played in Southern States.
Lena Horne later wrote that the movie producers did not make her into a servant, but they did not make her into anything else, either. Lena Horne once said that World War Ⅱ helped make her a star. She was popular with both black and white servicemen. She sang on army radio programs and traveled to perform for the troops. During one event, she noted that German prisoners of war were permitted to sit closer to the stage than black soldiers. These experiences led to Lena Horne's work in the civil rights movement.
She protested racial separation at the hotels where she performed. She took action so that she and her musicians would be permitted to stay in those hotels. Black musicians at the time generally stayed in black neighborhoods. Lena Horne also sang at civil rights gatherings. She took part in the March on Washington protest in 1963. It was during this event that Martin Luther King Junior gave his “I Have a Dream” speech.
Lena Horne performed in a strong and expressive way. One expert said she was not warm and amiable like white female singers at the time. Instead, she was a fierce black woman.

Two pairs of old-fashioned black shoes with rugged cotton soles (鞋底) stand out among a pile of items, including awards certificates that exemplify Zhong Jing’s work in improving rural health over the past 14 years.
The shoes are by no means finely finished and point to the tough manual labor of a 90-year-old villager who touched Zhong’s soul and made her decide to put down roots in Longhe village, Longchang town, Qianxi-nan Bouyei and Miao autonomous prefecture in Guizhou province.
“I’ve never been able to get over how she must have struggled across several kilometers of rough mountain roads just to send me these shoes,” Zhong says.
The anecdote is one of many that tell of the bond between Zhong and the village’s 3,000 or so residents. Rain or shine, Zhong opens the door of her clinic in the village no later than 7: 30 am each day. The clinic is the only place where the villagers can see a doctor and have their ailments (疾病尤指慢性病) tended without trekking (艰苦跋涉) further afield.
Zhong, 39, knows every one of her patients and their conditions, so her diagnoses are done efficiently, with prescriptions that almost always seem to do the trick. When villages are on their work breaks, Zhong makes calls to some who have chronic (长期的) diseases, such as high blood pressure, and diabetes.
When Zhong settled down in Longhe in 2008, villagers’ worries of having nowhere to turn to in a medical emergency evaporated.
1. What’s the local villagers’ reaction when Zhong first appeared in the village?A.They relied on her treatment very much. |
B.They did not have belief in her very much. |

D.They treated her as one of their own. |
A.To illustrate that Zhong lived a poor life. |
B.To illustrate that Zhong walked a long way. |
C.To illustrate Zhong’s simple lifestyle. |
D.To illustrate the local’s appreciation for her. |
A.Because she has advanced diagnose skills. |
B.Because she has confidence in her medial knowledge. |
C.Because she thoroughly knows her patients’ conditions. |
D.Because the local patients have no other clinic to go. |
A.Disappeared. | B.Declined. | C.Established. | D.Confirmed. |
